They also were incredibly fortunate. Check out their their stats. They didn’t lose a fumble after their first game against Old Dominion the REST OF THE YEAR. 16 games. 1 fumble lost. 15 in a row. Not A One.

Mendoza had 41 TDs, only 6 INTs. Their red zone scores were 71-77 (92%). Red Zone TDs 56-77 (73%). FGs by their starting kicker. 18-19 (94.7%)
The caused 11 fumbles and 19 INTs. So +23 in turnovers. 3 punt return TDs….

Least penalized team in power 4…60 for the entire YEAR. 3.75 per game….441 total penalized yards. For an avg per game of 27.5 yards per game. Incredible.

And basically no injuries to a starter. They lost a DE in the BIG champ game in their 2 deep. But I don’t think they lost a top 25 guy on their team for the season or the stretch/playoff run.

They basically did not play a single backup at any of their back 7 all season except one corner. Absurd.

EDIT: Here is the breakdown

Their third CB: 133 snaps
Their 4th LB: 82 snaps
Their third S: 47 snaps

Confluence of absurd injury luck, a ballsy gamble to ride your starters with zero regard to depth building, and probably some competitive advantage at nutrition/health/S&C. Tennessee dropped a truckload on their S&C Guy.

Yeah it’s a sight man

Injury luck, ball bounce luck, and ref luck. All at the same time with incredible situational coaching and clutch QB play from a guy who totaled 30 TDs the previous 2 years combined, then gets 41 as a transfer. The anti Sam Hartman. He went from 2 star composite prospect, undrafted free agent level player, transfer on the level of Luke Kromenhoek going to Miss St from FSU, to the Heisman and #1 pick.

The penalties may never been replicated. Disciplined teams will have a game with 10 penalties for 100 yards. To avg under 28 yards per game basically is less than a pass interference, delay of game, and one holding over 120-130 snaps combined O and D. 16 times in a row.

The most important stat was the fact the best team was left off the bracket.

I don’t think he’s a top 50 guy but I do think he’s probably underrated at this point as the composite #199 player. He has offers from everyone and us and Oregon (along with OSU) have been battling this one out - that’s 3 of the top 5 programs in the country.

I think he’s underrated from the perspective that if he hits there’s not many players like him and getting 1 through the portal will cost a fortune due to the low number available.

I'd rather have the edge rushers if I had to choose, but adding him to the mix with these DEs would be amazing.

Plus, I think it would allow O'Neil more time to battle it out at SDE, rather than move to DT.

Agreed. I don't think he's a game changing talent but he certainly has the makings of a starting / rotational caliber NG on a playoff contender. He was an extremely high floor, IMO. He's shorter than listed (more 6'1.5 than 6'3) but has a frame that should easily carry 310lbs. From a technical standpoint, he's pretty college ready. Advanced with his hands for his age. My questions really surround how much upside he has. I think that's why I rate him as much more of a 90-150 type talent than something higher than that.

I'll begin with the obvious intangibles that are more mouth watering than Hot Pockets for some folk: he attends a Chicago Catholic League school and he's Chris Zorich's godson.

If he was an edge rusher instead of a DT, he's probably ranked higher by these people who do that stuff. Good feet, good hands, very disruptive. He's about to be a senior in high school. This is not a finished product. He can play three downs in college.

He's rare, he's a 3 down NG. He is extremely good IMO just not a sexy position and that's what hurts his ranking. The same thing will happen with Caleb Tucker in '28, the position just doesn't rank well because the traditional athletic measurement don't show well with NG.
Big run stopping NG/NT I’m in. What that could do to free up the edge rushers and LB scheme blitzes!!

Tucker was ranked in the low 40s some months back.

Some of them (like all positions) are ranked incorrectly, but it's not as if the lack of "sexiness" automatically hurts the position. Dominant players that project to NG are often (but not always) highly valued in modern recruiting.

Some guys that come to mind immediately are Dexter Lawrence, Maason Smith, Raekwon Davis, Derrick Brown, Gervon Dexter, etc. All were highly ranked NG candidates and went on to become 1st and 2nd Round NFL Draft Picks. Guys that have the measurables and whose film and camp performances are undeniable, are often ranked relatively accordingly.

You're not wrong but, as mentioned previously, some NG are late bloomers.

After his Jr season Mason Graham was a low 3 star kid who was a Boise State commit. He didn't blow up until the (HS) fall camp of his Sr year. Physically he made a huge jump that summer.

Not the vase here but food for the discussion.
