The experience with cops is hit-and-miss, and that's how I judge them.

I've been jumped by two thugs in the middle of Secor Rd in Toledo, and Ottawa Hills, Toledo, and UT cops all came cruising at 60mph down the road and found me beating the tar out of those thugs on the pavement, and then after the processing they drove me to the house party...knowing fully that it was my 20th birthday and was drinking. They didn't care, they fight real crime.

I've also met cops in small college towns whose sole job it is to bust underage parties. They enjoyed telling me the process, 1) drive around and find a party, 2) listen for noise, 3) call the stand-by judge who will give them the warrant to bust the party, 3) arrest every kid in the party when they surround the place.

Cops in the first story are respected, cops in the second party make me angry. Angry like when Crist fumbled the ball against USC...to the tenth power.

Agreed. The latter type are worthless and sadistic. If you want to stop drunk driving, institute drunk driver checkpoints, I have no problem with that. But if it's a Friday or Saturday night, unless there's a serious noise complaint, the cops should not be there.

For the cop haters out there...grow up. Cops are like everybody else...every other professsion/occupation. Some cops are dinks. Some convenience store clerks are dinks. Just because you have had experience with a dink cop or two doesn't mean they are all like that.

But here is a novel thought...sometimes the guys that cops have to deal with are dinks. And sometimes people who are drinking are unreasonable dinks.

What one ought to ask themsevles is this: have my experiences with abusive cops been entirely during periods when I was intoxicated? If your answer is "Yes." then I suggest it is likely that you were the dink.

Agreed kind sir. Maybe I'm looking at this with to much of a simplistic mind but I really am not sure why the drinking age can't be lowered to 18 or 19. The average age around the world appears to be in the 18-19 range for legalized drinking. (Legal drinking age - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

When I went to Tulane the drinking age was 18 in NOLA. This was from '92 - '96. Bars were also open 24 hours a day. Tulane had hardly any on campus parties or house parties. You just went to a bar. I never knew anyone to have problems with the police down there. I also never saw any bar fights or that type of thing with students.

Maybe my experience was unique. However, I think there are a few reasons why it might be: drinking and partying was such a part of that town, being able to drink at a young age takes some of the mystique out of it because you could just finish class and walk to a bar and get a drink, most drinking was contained to bars, and the police in NOLA are world class at crowd control because of Mardi Gras.

Again, maybe my experience was unique and maybe it has changed in the 20 years since then.

I am in my sixties and have seen personally witnessed a few cases of abuse of police power. In one case I witnessed a police officer deliberately break someone’s arm because the guy was drunk and mouthing off. I know that some police officers in the town where I grew up abused their authority. I was a member of the military in San Diego in the late 60’s and early 70’s and know of, and saw, cases of police abuse of authority. I don’t hate the police and most of them are doing a good job. It is naive however to think that no police misuse their authority.

With the budget cuts here in California, you'd almost have to know someone on the force to get an officer to respond to a noise complaint. In San Francisco they won't immediately come out to a burglary call if the burglar is gone....they'll come by within the next 24 hours to take a report.

Read Buster's account of how small town college cops operate on the previous page. I don't know if that's how the raid on Goodman's house happened, but it sounds more plausible than the "responding to a simple noise complaint" theory.

I completely agree with you on the 'wise-***' comments. NDHoosier was also out of line and he got a violation/waring (or whatever they are called) way before Buster did, warning him about a possible banning if he persisted with the personal insults. Buster went over-the-line as well, and persisted with it.

This whole damn thread is an embarrassment to this site if you ask me, but hey, people keep posting on it, so I don't want to 'over-mod' by closing it. Oh well....
