This is so great. Beating out Indiana and Purdue for a elite Indiana recruit never happens. Brey has this program headed in a great direction being able to get guys like Atkins, Grant, Bieldshied, Auguste, and now Beachem.

I saw it coming but I was still hoping he'd pick Butler. Either way we're still looking to have a great class with Nolan Berry leading it off.

He is going to play for The Bulldog's of New Haven this year because they closed Harding High down. Have to say he is the first ND recruit from my old school. Go Bulldogs. Go Irish.

Notre Dame recruit difficult to assess on court

It's a bit difficult to get a read on V.J. Beachem when you watch him play basketball. What you think you see when you study him isn't actually accurate in many instances.

You may think that the New Haven junior doesn't play at a fast pace. But that doesn't mean that Beachem's not moving quickly. He is so athletic and graceful that he glides among the other nine players, rather than cuts among them.

You may be of the opinion that Beachem isn't a physical player because he spends much of the game on the perimeter, while teammates Curtis Elwood and Kyle Sovine work near the basket. But Columbia City fans would be quick to tell you which Bulldog player grabbed one critical rebound after another in the final minutes of New Haven's 69-63 Northeast Hoosier Conference victory on Friday.

You may think that Beachem is just another selfish gunner as many of the top high school players can be. While true, Beachem does lead his team in shot attempts, the 6-foot-7 forward is an efficient scorer (he hit 8 of 17 shots against the Eagles) and just may be a better passer (he totaled three assists) than he is a shooter - and that is saying something.

Beachem contributed in a variety of ways at both ends of the court on Friday to help his team get back on the right track. New Haven (10-2, 4-1 NHC) opened its season with nine consecutive victories, but got humiliated in recent back-to-back losses against Norwell and Bishop Dwenger.

But against Columbia City (10-4, 2-2), New Haven showed toughness (it out-rebounded the Eagles 23-21 and out-scored the hosts 15-8 over the final minutes), and that moxie was epitomized by Beachem (25 points, seven rebounds).

With the game tied at 56, it was Beachem that knocked in a shot to give his team a lead that it would never relinquish.

On the ensuing possession, it was Beachem that made a steal to give his team the ball, which ultimately led to a bucket by Elwood (14 points).

Beachem then closed the game by grabbing three rebounds and sinking all four of his free throw attempts (he was 7 of 8 on the night) to put the game away. He also saved a dog from a fire on his way out of Columbia City.

OK, so the last part isn't true, but if you knew what kind of kid Beachem is that feat wouldn't surprise you.

Again, Beachem proves a task to analyze because the cynics among us can't fathom that this guy is as genuine as he actually is, which is essentially the Fort Wayne version of Tim Tebow.

Following the Bulldogs' victory, Beachem spent the better part of 45 minutes greeting every well-wisher that wanted a minute of his time – many of whom were Eagle fans.

Like Tebow, Beachem doesn't limit his diligence to within the boundaries of an athletic field. He's a God-fearing honor student that has committed to Notre Dame and will expend as much effort in pursuit of his degree as he will exceling for Fighting Irish coach Mike Brey.

That much about Beachem we can be certain of.

Goes to my old school and seen him play multiple times this year. Very good talent just needs to get the mental stuff down and he will be very hard to stop.
