I don't do Twitter, but is this sort of talk common on Twitter coming from 18 year olds towards virtual strangers? I'm fully prepared to accept that I am completely out of step with the modern world.

I know it was dumb of Magnuson to tweet it publicly, but some of you are kidding yourselves if you don't think many ND football players don't throw around the f word, too.

That's the first time I've seen a slur like that used by a recruit on twitter. I don't know how old you are but I'd say that using "fag" or "faggot" are fairly common among High School kids. Doesn't make it any better though.

I guess I was thinking less of the specific slur than the overall tenor of the tweets and the general "you are b!tch3$" attitude, etc. etc. I don't doubt our guys talk a little trash and use cuss words, but it just seems a little over the top from a commit....Of course, I come from the "let your play do your talking" school, or would hope you can at least be a little creative in your trash talk.....This sort of reaction demeans the program, in my view. But since it's Michigan's program, I say "carry on, son."

Clearly no one on IE has ever called anyone a faggot or fag. We're way too politically correct to have ever done that.

No he probably shouldn't have posted this on twitter. However, if he was an Irish commit, we'd say he's just being an 18 year old kid. The fact that he's a UM commit and said this makes him homophobic and not a RKG. If you think I'm wrong then fine, but I encourage you to read tweets from some of our current commits and see how many times the N word is used. I suppose that's acceptable though, right?

As I've said in the past, my niece goes to school with this kid. She said, despite his immense size, that he's a good dude to everyone on campus, even the lowly minions who walk the hallways.

He was extremely stupid to throw that tweet with that word out there, but what my niece tells me, he's a good kid.

I'd agree with this. Further, not that Magnuson is without blame, but the general idea of some random guy in Ohio feeling a need to trash talk with an 18 year old high school kid strikes me as the messed up part of this situation. The adult carries the responsibility to not be a d-bag (and yes, I'm aware 18 year olds are adults in the eyes of the law...when it comes down to it, they still have a lot of growing up to do).

I agree with this sentiment. Just a kid doing something stupid.

Just to clarify, I'm not condoning what he said. He shouldn't have. I just find it sad that we have to over analyze every tweet we read and vilify these kids for being dumb kids.

Wait, was anyone thinking he was an awful kid to begin with? lol I am a bit surprised he chose the word "faggot". It's been a LONG time since I've heard that term used, but hearing a kid talk mess especially in defense is not uncommon at all. It's just not smart.

I swear like a sailor. You should hear me yell at my PS3 when things seem to be going completely against me in a video game. It's bad.

Hell, in half of my posts here you'll see some sort of censor. lol

I think that's the point. I don't think anyone on here cares about cursing or anything like that... but when you step from "kid" into "athlete" (which is exactly what you're doing when you get on twitter and start arguing with rival fanbases) you get held to a higher standard.

Remember the crap storm Kobe took for calling a ref a faggot? The bottom line is he shouldn't be:

1. Mixing it up with Ohio State fans.
2. Dropping slurs all over the global PSA channel that is twitter.

Not condemning the kid or his character at all. That would be silly.

I'm not condoning his language or general douchy-ness, but this isn't uncommon at all. The difference is that this scholarly gentleman decided to speak/type/behave this way in one of the most public forums in the history of the world. Bottomline, he's an idiot.

Also, I'd love to hear Josh Gs response when he saw that this jackoff brought him into it.

Ps. Dude still has a legendary O-lineman name.

This, Fag is commonplace in high school. The word is commonplace on message boards. It is a hateful word but I said it a lot at that age. Stupid of Magnuson to respond but I wouldn't judge his character off of it.

Yeah I agree. Faggot sounds so much worse than fag. Fag in highschool kid terms is more like used for a person who is annoying or stupid something like that. Faggot just sounds much worse.

Quite possibly the best word to call a fellow man when you want to really get under their skin. Just sayin'.

it might, but in the end it's just as bad. and it's been used on this site without punishment. more specifically toward me without provocation in a runaway thread, and the mods defended the user that posted it by not doling out any punishment and claiming it wasn't a big deal. several other users thought it was funny and posted to that effect. it's the reason i didn't use the site for quite some time and barely participate in threads. all because i live in san francisco. absolutely ridiculous.

it's condemnable and neither term should be condoned. this kid should understand the power of words like these. i hope he has/will apologize. obviously it's a forgivable offense, but nobody should be looking the other way or "just sayin"

When was this?

I remember a couple of years ago, before I became a mod, and one member used it on another member. Perhaps it was you. I remember that exact comment and conversation. I was pissed/appalled/wanted to kick that guy's ***, and nothing was done to that idiot poster because, in effect, there were no mods. I told that dude to basically eff off, and he laughed it off b/c he knew there was nothing I or anyone else could do. I almost left the site that day for good but was talked off the ledge by a couple of great members. Shortly thereafter, jpham took over, invited BGIF and I and a couple of others to become mods, and the rest is history.

If that was you, you are more than welcome/encouraged to come back. The first thing BGIF did as mod was ban that idiot member (and his several aliases thereafter). He hasn't been around for probably 2 years at least.

And if that word is still bandied about freely, I've yet to see it and you need to report it. But seriously, I highly doubt it. Even though we're all guys and most of (myself included, sadly, until I grew up the past 5 years) have used that word far too frequently, people are pretty good on this site about realizing that that word is offensive to many members here.

Anyway, I hope you come around more often. You won't be treated like that anymore, guaranteed...
