NCAA helping tOSU

I can't believe that after all the sh!t that went down at pOSU that the NCAA is actually helping them out with recruiting. I guess they want their golden child Urban Meyer to succeed and much as possible, along with the Big Ten in general. They basically get 20 coaches, ten for coaching and ten strictly for recruiting during times when most coaches are getting ready for bowl games.

NCAA Waiver allows Meyer to Recruit

Under normal NCAA guidelines, teams are only permitted to have 10 full-time coaches on staff, including the head coach. In this case, Ohio State filed what is called an SLR waiver (formerly ARS), which is Subcommittee for Legislative Relief, with the NCAA.

“What we did in this case is file the waiver to say we would like to have more than 10 coaches, but the responsibilities essentially will not go beyond 10 coaches,” said Chris Rogers, Ohio State’s Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance.

“Which is to say, for a lack of a better word, the former coaching staff will have responsibilities for on-field coaching only. The new coaching staff members who would come on would have responsibilities for recruiting and administrative responsibilities only.”

Meyer wouldn't have taken the job if tOSU was going to get hammered. He's smarter than that. I kind of figured the NCAA wouldn't do anything. They want tOSU to succeed. The NCAA is a frickin' joke.

What the NCAA is doing is just allowing the coaching staff that actually will be coaching the players next year recruit while the others finish up the season. It's not really like they are giving them an edge or something (unless former and current coaches go out recruiting).

I disagree - there's definitely an edge. While ND and Michigan are practicing, thereby limiting their recruiting (or while they are recruiting, thereby limiting their practices), OSU is getting the best of both worlds. It's b.s., but whatever. I'll save my anger for if/when OSU skates on their sanctions. They BETTER get USC'd..

ncaa is growing softer rather than tougher...i just don't see them getting hammered, there's too much money to be made and it's a shame, but that will probably be the deciding factor.

Good point. I didn't even think of that.

This is bullshit.

1,000,000 vbucks says they walk.

This. My understanding is the current staff gets to coach and the new staff hits the recruiting trail. Right? It sounds more and more like the NCAA will say the school punished themselves enough and give them a slap on the wrist.

The more I think about this, the more I think it is complete and total bewl sh!t by the NCAA. This is a huge advantage for OSU right now. Anybody know if there is precedent for this or if this is a common occurrence for teams in staff-transition?

That's really the key question. If this is something that is normally done, just not advertised, then I don't see any problem. It might be that tOSU was just one of the first to know about this rule, and use it.

If petitions like this are not normally granted, then I can see A LOT of people being (rightly) upset about it.

This may have happened before but I've never heard of it. OSU FIRED their coach then allowed him to resign. In either case they're entitled to a replacment but not one more coach than the allotted 10.

There are more than 2 dozen programs going through coaching transitions, do they all get extra help? It's always been awkward for the lame duck staff to recruit prospects they can't coach but it's how it's been done by everybody. You make due.

Waiver or not, this is blantantly unfair to all the other programs and coaches that are recruiting and preparing for a bowl game with a staff of no more than 10.

This IS an Extra Benefit.
