To be fair, a lot of those points came in the AF and Navy games, when we burst out of the gates at a ridiculous pace both offensively and defensively.

Not true:

ND's 1st quarter scoring this year:

USF: 0
Mich: 14
MSU: 14
Pitt: 0
Pur: 14
Air Force: 21
USC: 0
Navy: 14
WF: 10
Maryland: 10
BC: 10
Stanford: 0

We were somewhat consistent.

The comments about Rees not shining against the good teams really is more a reflection on the offensive line's failure to protect the quarterback. Hendrix will do better in those circumstances because he can run, but that's off the point. Has anybody seen a team go far when it can't protect the QB against quality opponents? The Irish will have a QB problem as long as they can't protect him.

I think it has to be Rees he's run the offense pretty much all season long.
Next spring is when you open the QB battle.

Hendrix was not that impressive either. He obviously has a cannon but he basically played against a soft *** cover 2-3 and ran while defenders were going backwards. When he came in for Rees in the first quarter, he looked pretty awful.

Great point. When we get O linemen that can do the job like Alabama has ND will be a step closer to being a BCS caliber team. The secondary will have to be rebuilt and maybe get some speed at wide receiver.

Hendrix first substantial playing time against the #4 team in the country...without out Jonas- I was impressed. Especially him picking up yards with his feet, when the receivers were covered.

Maybe this has been said already but I think it depends on the team we play. We either play FSU or Clemson from some articles I was reading, just depends on how the conference championships unfold.

i think it will be Hendrix though.

Can we join the ACC already??

This is true. I just watched the first two drives of the Stanford game. Stanford had a 240 lb defensive end, #44. Instead of running at him, ND thought it could handle him in the passing game. First they tried Martin, but #44 beat him so fast that Rees got killed on the play he got hurt. Then, they tried Koyack on him but once again he beat him on the pass play where Rees fumbled.

This has to be said though: When you've got a 240 pound defensive end, why not start the game by running right at him and pounding him into submission? Run at him until he proves he can handle it. Instead, ND ran away from him, where he could use his speed for pursuit. It's baffling.

Hendrix should start. Rees limits the offense. We need to start worrying about the 2012 season so let Hendrix go with Tommy as the backup.

I think start Tommy, but only because I don't want to throw Hendrix to the wolves. I'd much rather save the competition for the spring than thrown Hendrix in, then have us get down early and be toying with Tommy in the second half. Start Tommy, rotate in Hendrix per usual, finish 9-4 and let them compete for next season.

Talked to Hendrix tonight, he seems to think he'll be starting. Take this with a grain of salt because I'm hammered.

No one knows anything [at our level anyway] except one thing: Coach will be thinking of it solely in terms of how to construct a strategy of giving us the best chance to win.

Having said that, and producing my own BS with some sort of humility, I think that he has only two viable options:

1). Start Tommy [because he doesn't want to just toss Andrew out there cold, and because Tommy pre-snap manages better] with the plan to put Andrew in ASAP when the offensive coaches have had a chance to see pretty much what [FSU] the opponent is doing. This would allow Kelly to assess how much running power we have that game for instance.

2). Start Andrew right off. This is the intriguing option of course. It would say a heck of a lot more than just the act itself. It would say that Coach thinks that Andrew is not just talented but ready to game manage the playbook. AND it would say that in the spring, the entire drama would be Hendrix vs Golson. The only way that Tommy would still be a viable starting candidate in the spring under the Hendrix-starts-the-bowl-game scenario would be if Andrew completely messes up. If he does [start] and doesn't [completely mess up], then Tommy will be a perpetual back-up serviceable game manager for the rest of his career.

Maybe then he will begin to get more nice things said about him, and how he got our new era off the ground, so that Andrew and Everett could really fly with the recruits that the improvement got us.
