Why Rivals Has Lost a Step

From an article on the toughest decisions in the Rivals 100:

Mike Farrell: My toughest decision was dropping Jarron Jones out of the top 100. He has excellent upside as an offensive tackle but he's being recruited as a DT and prefers defense. He's just not consistent, dominant or physical enough at the position to be a top 100 prospect.

First of all, it's simply ridiculous that the #8 DT (where they dropped him to) is not in the top 100 by default... when there are TWENTY WRs in the top 100. It's ridiculous because, by Rivals own accounts, they try to evaluate prospects on NFL upside. One simply needs look at recent NFL drafts to see why someone with Jarron Jones' build, position, and upside has a much higher chance of being a top 100 NFL prospect than the 20th best WR prospect.

Second, ND recruits "bigs"... and while Jarron is currently slated for the DL there is no doubt that if he ends up not being effective at that position that our coaches would put him in a position to succeed. What they are doing is the equivalent of taking Denard Robinson, who was a 4:s: athlete, learning that Rich Rod wants to put him at QB and then docking him to 2:s: because he has an inaccurate arm and slight build. Of course that doesn't make sense... because if he failed at QB then you'd simply put him at a skill position as an ATH.

I follow recruiting really closely but... who cares? As long as we have him I'm fine. I didn't lose any sleep when they said Aaron Lynch wasn't a five star. If anything I hope Jarron comes in with Lynch's attitude because of this. Everything about the way Lynch plays is with a chip on his shoulder. Maybe Jarron does the same and for me, as a fan, that's just gravy.

They have, and people affiliated with Rivals will even admit that (Michael Langston told me Lynch not getting his fifth star was "beyond absurd").

Jones isn't physical and dominant enough? Have I been watching the same tape as everyone else?

Who's the best. Some of Rivals rankings are just way off. Scout is off. I kinda like ESPNs. 247 not even having Mahone as a 4:s: is weird.

Eh... missed a lot of time this season with injury and didn't put up a big year. I kinda understand it.

247 has the best evaluaters there are. Mostly because they were with Rivals when Rivals was good.
