Keeping Golic for a 5th year

I was wondering what you guys thought of keeping Mike around for next year and trying to move him to guard to replace Robinson or maybe move Cave to replace Robinson and keeping that depth with the o line. I've always thought that having older guys with more playing time and knowledge of the system is beneficial to a team and it seemed like a possibility. Any thoughts?

I could definitely see him playing his way into a 5Y over the next 3 games. If he comes back, he'll likely replace Robinson at ROG, since Cave is a lock to return.

It's not guaranteed though. Golic needs to have a strong showing to finish out the season.

Keeping Golic for a 5th year

There was some discussion on this in the Irish Connection thread and maybe the Wake or Maryland game threads.

Normally I say yes but as they're only bringing back 4 or 5, 5th years, I don't think it's likely. A healthy Cave obviously gets a slot. Therein lies a hard call by the staff. Kelly said today his surgery was fine but how does rehab go? They're going to have to make a call based on a projected rehab estimate. We're under 3 months to NSD which is soon when evaluating rehab.

It depends on how well recruiting goes. He's certainly playing himself into contention.

It also depends greatly on if any one else can play center. Watt can but do you move him from guard and plug some one else there, no.

If he plays well these next couple of games I would say yes you bring him back......unless an elite player wants to come.

Tough decisions and good problems to have.

If he plays well over the next 4 games then definitely bring him back. If next year we are hoping to make the next step and try and get to 10 wins then i'd much rather have a guy like him then some freshman who probably would redshirt.

I say we bring back:

Cave
Golic, Jr.
Kapron Lewis-Moore
Jamoris Slaugher
Sean Cynwar

If we bring back those 5 players and a strong QB emerges for us then as long as we make improvement/development in our linebackers then we should be pretty good and deep next year.

I don't want to turn this into a QB discussion thread but I can't emphasize enough the importance of a strong offensive line. It's probably won us 2-3 games this year. It's so refreshing to see this year and i hope it continues. I don't want to rag on Rees because he does some things very well for his age but i think the truth of the matter is that he cannot handle a pass rush and cannot find ways to buy a few more seconds if he's being rushed. He has progressed recently into not turning the ball over as much when he gets pressured, but now his strategy seems to be to throw the ball away quickly the second he senses a pass rush.

With this said, this is why it is so important to have a veteran offensive line for him if he's our QB next year. If we were to go with a QB like Golson or Hendrix who could scramble more i feel it might not be as crucial although it still is crucial for our running game. If Golic can show over the next 4 games that he'd be a better option than a true freshman next year then we need to give him a 5th year of eligibility.

Bring him back. Even as insurance along the line. He is a veteran who knows the system. That is important should anyone go down.

It is all about numbers. How many of those dream recruits will decide to come to ND on national signing day? If it comes down to Dorial Beckham Green or Bob Golic Jr. for one year, how can you say no to Green?

However if we don't land a surprise signing day home run, Golic is an invaluable player. I think he could start at OG and provide depth at C. The value of experience on the O line cannot be overestimated.
