After coming across this article this morning I sat and thought about this all day, and I kept coming back to the same thing...This is a private school! PRIVATE!

They could have but why should they? They used to be one of the strictest catholic colleges in the country.

Idk. I'm Catholic, but I don't believe in forcing my views on somebody or oppressing/keeping someone from practicing their own faith.

you know what you sign up for. no one forces you to go there. you don't like it? pack up and transfer.

They're not oppressing them. No one is forcing them to go to school there. There are definitely better schools, and there are definitely cheaper schools.

Most Catholic schools have a crucifix or cross in every room. I remember seeing them all over the place at ND.

That's not the point. The point is it's a private institution and these people are electing to pay money to attend. Don't like it? Stop paying to go there and pay to go somewhere else. The whole premise of this case is simply outrageous.

No matter what you substitute for "crosses" or "Catholicism" the case simply does not hold up. What if I was religious against... I dunno... how about... snow. Then I decide to to Notre Dame, knowing full well that it is in South Bend and it snows there (or at least having that information readily available to me... and if my hate of snow is that important you would think I'd research it before electing to go there...), and then when December rolls around freaking out and demanding they heat a portion of North Quad so there is patch of grass I can snuggle with.

OK that was pretty ******. Better example? Let's say I'm a vegan to some religious level (this has to exist) and even though I have plenty of opportunity to eat salad in the dining hall I just can't stand the sight of meat. It's so repulsive to me that I demand meat gets taken out of North Dining Hall and sure the University. I mean, what's the big deal? All of those meat eaters can go to South if they want. I have a right to a meat free dining hall because it is what I believe in! Yeah, when I signed up to go to the school I knew there was meat in the dining hall, but still!! Fix it!

See how preposterous that premise is?

I never said they have a case; I just find it hard to believe there isn't a place they could practice their beliefs.

And I only read the first paragraph or so and it didn't sound like they were sickened by the cross or anything. They just want a place that isn't covered in Catholic symbolism to pray and to be able to form a student group of Muslims.

Not only is this a PRIVATE Catholic college, apparently the only person "offended" by this is the lawyer trying to bring about action.In the article it even states that no students have felt persecuted, and that there is no legal basis to do anything.

It's pretty plain and simple...if you don't like it go somewhere else.Did they honestly not think there would be a lot of christian symbols and imagery when they decided to attend a Catholic College??? I find this way too funny. PC garbage is a big reason why our country is going to hell in a handbasket.

Yup. It's so weird because no one treats each other with respect in the age of the internet.... but at the same time you can't do anything without "offending" and getting sued. So normal dudes like you and I run around being able to basically do or say whatever we want because of free speech... and sue anyone we disagree with. But "powerful" people or people in the public eye can't say a darn thing unless it is politically correct. How backwards is that?

See: Kobe getting blasted for using the word "fag" towards an NBA official. But USC and UM trolls can drop porn bombs on our gameday threads without any backlash at all. Just so strange. It used to be if you were a powerful person you could say whatever the hell you wanted to someone... and it was lower class that had to walk around on eggshells because a word out of line could mean their life. Boy have times changed over the last century.

I go to a Catholic high school where most of the student body is Catholic. Attendance at all school masses are mandatory. However, you don't have to participate. All we ask is that you be respectful of the students who do participate and take it seriously. No talking, stand when everyone else is standing, etc.

When we pray in class, it's the same deal. Just be respectful. Don't be reading a book or cramming for a test during prayer.

It's all about being respectful to each other's religions. Is ND disrespecting Muslims by having crosses in every room? No. Is it forcing religion on them? No. If you're a Muslim and you sign up to go to Notre Dame, you should know full well that you will be attending a Catholic university, and don't be shocked when it's a Catholic environment.

Full disclosure, I'm Catholic, so take that FWIW. Trying not to be biased here.

I get what you are saying but America was founded by many races, Germans, French, Brits, etc.

Race has nothing to do with religion.

Certain demographics are inclined to certain religions.

Most often, Catholics that go to Baptist schools don't request the instructor not to touch on "rapture" during Religion 101...

Just like how Muslims should not ask a Catholic school to remove crosses.

At John Banzhaf, did you know that the students in which you alledge are not allowed to practice (religion) are going to a Catholic School? If a Catholic student were to enroll into a (religion) school, would the shoe be on the other foot? Banzhaf, you are a joke, go back to being a comedian. Freedom of all religions, Catholic School, or public school? Have the students transfer to a public school and practice, meditate, or whatever it is they do.

Now that I am on my phone I can not quote but to Johnnykillz I was mostly talking about the second part of what I quoted when he said that all the races should go back to their homeland.

America was no ones homeland until EVERYONE fought for it. Some of the main people didn't even speak english. Americans are very cocky, me included, but in reality we were the last to the party.

But the thing about Notre Dame is that it's a complete spiritual community. We know the head religion is Catholicism, but I don't think it's quite the same as Catholic University. I just meant that like others have stated, why go to a school where you may not be able to practice your faith?

Yeah I understand, just mentioning that everyone built this country. If you do it the right way to get here then I see no problem.

On topic though, if I walk into McDonalds and try to order a Big Mac, I won't make a fuss. It is McDonalds establishment, I shouldn't fuss.

Same goes with anything else. Like, having the Ten Commandments on a courthouse lawn. Who cares.

The thing that really got me was the whole "human rights" thing, of all religions, i'm pretty sure a religion which basically allows women NO rights trying to determine human rights is outrageous. I understand America was built by lots of different people with different ideas, and in terms of PUBLIC PROPERTY, I understand, but in terms of a PRIVATE school they can do whatever the hell they want within the confines of the law.
