Does anyone know who we definitely will lose next year and who we could lose but could offer a 5th year of eligibility?

Here's what I have but I could be way off:

4V
Patrick Coughlin
Taylor Dever
Gary Gray
Nick Lezynski
Andrew Nuss
Mike Ragone
David Ruffer
Chris Salvi
Ryan Sheehan
Harrison Smith

3V
Robert Blanton
Braxston Cave
Lane Clelland
Dayne Crist
Steve Filer
Michael Floyd
Darius Fleming
Jonathan Frantz
Mike Golic
John Goodman
Jonas Gray
Mike Grieco
Ethan Johnson
Ryan Kavanaugh
Kapron Lewis-Moore
Dennis Mahoney
Dan McCarthy
Anthony McDonald
Matthew Mulvey
Brandon Newman
Sean Oxley
Andrew Plaska
David Posluszny
Trevor Robinson
Ryan Sharpley
Jamoris Slaughter
Deion Walker
Hafis Williams

I know the 4V players are all gone. Of the players who are listed as 3V who are eligible to come back next year for a 5th year? I know Floyd and Robinson are definitely gone but I'm not sure the status of the others. I'm pretty sure Ethan Johnson and Blanton and Jonas Gray and Fleming are gone too but I'm not sure.

I definitely think Cave, Slaughter, and KLM are the three most important players to bring back. Of course, if i'm wrong about Johnson, Blanton, J Gray, or Fleming i'd want them back, too.

I dont pay attention to the practice squad. Hard to say who we definitely will lose from the guys who are 5th year eligible.

Also Blanton, Floyd, Fleming, Filer, Jonas, T-Rob and EJ are all in their 4th year. No eligibility left after this year

My guesses.

Has anyone ever graduated and come back but not on scholarship? You would think that would happen at least once.

I think you might keep Golic for depth purposes, depending on how the recruiting class unfolds.

Dayne Crist-- pending himself/Golson developing...he is gone.

Deion Walker- he will not be asked back.

John Goodman- pending how he finishes the season depends on him coming back

Lane Clelland- will not be asked back.

Braxston Cave- he will be back...but i thought he played sp
teams as a freshmen??

Mike Golic- will not be asked back unless its a courtesy which i dont see BK doing.

Kapron Lewis-Moore- will be back unless he leaves for the NFL.

Sean Cwynar- will be asked back one would think

Brandon Newman- will be playing football for someone other than ND next year

Hafis Williams- would highly doubt his return.

David Posluszny- gone.

Anthony MacDonald- dont see him being asked back unless Rabasa/Grace/Moore arent developing on schedule. Also if dayne leaves he is gone

Jamoris Slaughter- will be back. much needed return, maybe switch to CB?

This is a question and not a complaint. Do we really need Cywnar next year? Isn't Lou enough and maybe put in Kona as his backup?

Not so fast my friend. I'd say Golic has more of a chance than you think, as he provide much needed depth at center and guard even. If there is a freshman who just starts killing it at center, then yeah, you're probably right, but until that happens, Golic has an excellent shot at getting a 5th year if he wants it...

Cwynar is stout in there. Yesterday he was balling (at least, from eyes he was), and he was crucial last year as well. Say Nix gets hurt...are you comfortable with having nothing but converted nose tackles as starters and backups??? There will be zero depth there is they tell Cwynar he can't come back, which I highly doubt they will do...

What if Dayne takes his last year of eligibility to another school? (The Gators?)--I can see a few guys on that list doing this.

We want Cywner back. Golic Too. Maybe not as starters but I would think they could contribute.

Dayne can and should do that. Weis might want that too if their quarterback play isn't up to standards.

Transferring and playing QB is 100000x harder than OL or something. That will be an issue.

Thanks everyone for this list.

We're in huge trouble next year if we don't get Cave and Slaughter back. We can survive without KLM but without question we should bring him back. He's playing great this year. Bring Cywnar back, too. This is slightly off topic but what ever happened to Tyler Stockton. I thought him and Nix were going to be studs for the future. Is it safe to give up on Stockton by now or should we still put out hope? If we've given up on Tyler Stockton then i think we should also bring back Hafis Williams.

Also, I'm torn on Goodman. I don't think he's very good but he's Michael Floyd's backup this year and i don't know if it that position we have anyone else better. I'm very curious to see how Daniels, Smith, Ferugsson, and Massa look next year. If they feel two of these guys are ready for the big stage then I think we shouldn't bring Goodman back.

From what i heard on Golic is that he's decent. He's a backup offensive lineman but i think he could do well for us next year in that role. After Martin, Cave, and Nuss we have no experience at all on that line. I'd feel much better about next year's offensive line if we have Cave at center and Golic as his backup.

As for Crist, i don't think Kelly brings him back because if he does then Hendrix or Golson will surely transfer i think.

Having multiple DTs (Cwynar) is never a bad thing when your playing a 34 against military schools aka Ian Williams last year. But just his experience, and his work with Lou would benefit Tuitt/Nix/Jones/Day/Kona etc.

I think that BK cant wait for certain kids to get out as far as developing this team in a "Brian Kelly" team. You saw how the kids at Cincy felt when he left. All of them saw him as a father figure...I dont think thats quite the case at ND just yet.

With the kind of schedule we have next year. Depth will be crucial. No doubt Cywnar is back if admitted.

ZMartin/Watt/Cave/?/? = first group O-Line. My guess for the two"?s" is Lombard/Nichols, or Lombard/ Hegarty or Prestwood.

Second team: NMartin/?/?/and the other ones of Hegarty/Prestwood/Nichols.
The "?s" on second team would currently include Golic and Hanratty and Carrico. Also, Bruce Heggie if you wish.

That first team is pretty good if Lombard is as advertised, but the second unit is thin. This is why we need to get four commits this cycle guys. And it is also why if Kelly can do it, he's likely to offer Golic. We don't need a full five there in game-reality, but at least three ready-to-go good ones are needed even if you have no injuries. I believe that most talented teams have about four "extra" O-Linemen that they are confident in.

My wild intuition is that our 5+4 will include Cave, ZMartin, and Watt as the bellweathers, with Lombard close behind, and hopefully Nichols, Hegarty, NMartin, and Prestwood coming on fast. That's eight. To get a ninth do you get a superstud frosh? Keeping Golic may depend upon not only scholarship crunch but also if anyone else can snap the ball.

I'm not sure he will break out. I was so excited for this kid 3 years ago, and he just hasn't done much. I know he and BK had issues in the beginning but it seemed like in the Spring he was back on track, and then.... nothing. There is still a whole lot of season left I guess.

tell that to russell wilson.

There are always exceptions to the norm. And honestly Wisconsin could play without a quarterback and still be undefeated, they have had an absolutely pathetic schedule.

nobody has mentioned Dan McCarthy. He is a senior who will likely be asked back to provide depth at Safety and likely get playing time. We lose Blanton, Gray and Hayseed. That means we are looking at new starters at both Corners and a safety. We will see Motta, Slaughter and Collinsworth with the only safety experience. McCarthy can help.

This will be an offseason that will see alot of guys left on the fence depending on what recruits want to come aboard. Only real locks will be Slaughter, Cwynar, Golic, KLM.

I don't see how there will be room for Dan McCarthy given the scholarship situation, but we will see when the only guy who counts makes his decisions. I COULD see a head coach reasoning that he can get along with Motta, Slaughter, Collingsworth [who I think the staff like], with Eilar Hardy coming back, and Badger, Baratti, et al coming in. Not wedded to my opinion, but Kelly might want a blue-chip newbie rather than a safety back-up.

I think alot will depend on recruiting. If we have a great class, less 5th years will be offered. I liked last year, where we gave only a few 5th years, because the recruiting class was so strong. Need the same type of class this year, and then we only give a few 5th years.

For me, I would only give 5th years to returning senior OL, maybe DL if good, and that's about it (You could start adding others based on the size of the recruiting class)/.

Will Lewis-Moore be asked back, or are we satisfied with Lynch-Tuitt?
