I'd like to hear your opinions on "Red Shirting"

Is "Red Shirtng" a thing of the past?

If a college player is very good and the NFL really wants them, what are the chances of a college team having them for a fourth year much less a fifth?

How many really good college players stay and play a 5th year like Andrew Luck?

I feel, due to much better coaching and conditioning, college players are going into the NFL much more prepared and ready to contribute and compete as rookies than in the past.
Aren't some of the players coming to us out of high school more prepared and better conditioned than in the past?

My thought is, if a player is truly exceptional, they'll be competitive earlier than in the past and we should capitalize on their abilities while we have a realistic chance at having them instead of trying to save them and hoping they'll stick around. What do you think?

GO IRISH!!

Good question... redshirting is definitely not a thing of the past (see George Farmer, #1 WR recruit redshirting at USC this year) but I also think you're right that it doesn't really matter if someone is planning on leaving early. If you redshirt and then have 2 big years (especially for skill position players) you're as good as gone in most cases.

I think redshirting is still a near necessity for OL players and a lot of DL.

I do not mind redshirting. Notre Dame on the other hand does not redshirt their players, they apply for Grad school to become a 5th year senior. I respect that.

We just phrase it differently.

Most players like OL/DL are not physically ready for college football and is almost essential. Even the QB position should be redshirted just for the mental maturation of the game.

Its just like anything else, for some players its the right move, for others its not. For kids like Manti and Tuitt and the like - you want them on the field right way, they can make a difference and don't need a lot else. In other situations the kids need time to develop physically or mentally before they are ready.
