The only thing that this offense needs to do is get to the line faster. If not we are going ot have alot of delayed game flags.
I'm curious about how long you have been watching football? The reason I ask is that Tommy Rees DOES NOT have a reputation for holding on to the ball too long. You could argue that he should have "felt" the pressure coming, and that would be a legitimate argument, if it weren't for Rees' relative inexperience. Tommy Rees started his 7th game, yesterday. That's just over half a season. People are asking him to look like a two year starter, with 20+ starts under his belt, out there. People are right about one thing, though: Tommy Rees is not "the answer" at QB. But they are dead wrong on why. Tommy's not the answer at QB because there is no question at QB. Tommy Rees is the starting QB of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, and there's no competition. It's his team, hands down. You can cry and whine all you want, but no one who matters is listening. And, if they were, they would laugh you out of the room.
This exactly. The INT was Tommy being late on throwing the ball. The sack and fumble, was Tommy being late and not throwing the ball. Did no one watch Coach Kelly's presser, he said exactly these things. I like Tommy, think he'll do great. He just needs to keep learning. I have never, not one time on this thread roasted the kid.
On the fumble where he got blind-sided, I didn't see the coverage down field, so I can't comment. That stunt which led to the hit, forcing the fumble, was impressive, Zach Martin (I believe) was lost and confused, that was a great call, and executed well. Maybe he should have gotten the ball off, maybe not. Ive seen Tom Brady get buried on his blind side, and cough the ball up. Sometimes the Oline craps the bed, but I think the credit has to go to MSU's defensive coordinator. Great Call.
You're right, the INT was ugly.
Well I played tackle football from 1st to 12th, then four years at receiver in college (only DIII but my QB had legit chances at the NFL level, we also ran a very similar offense to Kelly's). And I have been watching my whole life, including actual game films. I never said Tommy shouldn't start. Read my posts, I never said this wasn't his team. I like the idea of having help on third and short with a QB who can execute the design zone read runs that Kelly has in this offense. And if you think that the interception was not Tommy reacting, instead of anticipating you are wrong. Yeah Zach Martin didn't block on the DT/DE twist stunt but bottom line, he should have had the ball out. Watch Kelly's post game presser, he felt the same.

I think Tommy anticipated ,before the ball was snapped, where the soft spot was going to be, and threw the ball. But he was wrong, and led to an ugly INT. I don't think he reacted to how the play was unfolding

It's not whining and crying, it just an opinion different from yours Sir.
I started this thread because I wanted other peoples opinions on the subject including yours. I don't think we should knock people for having a different opinion, especially when we have the same goal. I've said it before and I'll say it again " I'm no expert", I look to others for information, advise and a different point of view.
I never tried to absolve Tommy from responsibility, vis-a-vis the interception. In fact, I never even mentioned it. I simply said that he doesn't have a reputation for holding on to the ball too long, in reference to the sack/fumble, and that it takes time to develop that. Kelly did NOT say that Rees should have had the ball out. He said that Rees needs to develop that clock in his head. Those two are not absolutely logically linked. In other words, I have no idea at what point in time Kelly will want the ball to come out (2 seconds, 3.5 seconds, 5 seconds). But, if it's on the upper end, that play could very well have happened, regardless of the clock. As to 3rd and short............ rather than bringing in a new QB, how about if the Offensive line just blocks better? Or if Kelly calls a bubble screen on 3rd and short once in a while? Or if we do any number of things that the hundreds of football teams around the country, that DON'T have "short yardage QBs", do?
The tight end zone shot NBC showed of the play, showed him lock onto the TE and throw late allowing the defender to read him and rotate to the spot. If Rees throws as the receiver is coming open its a huge gainer. At least that's what I was seeing, but guys really it doesn't matter we can split hairs until we are crazy. Some will see one thing, some will see something else. Tommy is the starting QB and I believe he should be. I'd just like to see some help on third and short, maybe even the Lepracat (or whatever they call it).
I'm just glad we won.
If you're not whining and crying, then my words were not directed towards you. I'm sorry if you thought they were. However, comma, go back and read through the gameday threads, and you will find PLENTY of whining and crying about playing Hendrix and/or Golson. THOSE are the people that I was addressing with that comment.
OK, ok. You obviously didn't watch Florida win a title with Leak and Tebow, and that was different from all the other 119 teams would did not win the title that year. Kelly specifically picked Urban Meyer's brain on using dual QBs before this season, and for good reason because his offense is built short yardage-wise to have an athletic QB, i.e. the absence of a FB that allows to power run, and let's be honest Rees is not too athletic, this is why Crist started at the outset despite them basically being indistinguishable at the end of camp. And as far as the fumble you see it one way, I see it the other and that's more than fine. It was the line and Rees. I think it's easy to discern that Kelly meant he needs to get the ball out there, if you want to play the semantics game, then fine. This is Rees' team and I'm excited about it. I love this team and I love the Irish. 1-2 never made me so happy.

1. Tommy is the starter
2. He has started 6 games....hes not going to be perfect. As stated in MANY threads...look at BQ/JC 6 games in...theres going to be a growing pains.
3. msu has a very good defense. they dont gamble in their pass coverage, which doesnt allow for many big plays. tommy made plays yesterday when we needed him too. he took chances at the right times. Rees got rocked and fumbled...comes back and does work. Crist...you arent going to know how he is going to react.
4. the team backs rees.
5. you cant change qbs everytime something goes wrong. in this offense you will have INTs. in football you will have INTs. Having a defense that can make those irrelevant is the key...and we are almost there.
6. if hendrix was ready....you think we would have seen him by now right? with all of our redzone troubles...we would have used him by now.
7. consistency is what BK wants. All 3 games we have dominated each team on each side of the ball. Cutting down TOs, and learning how to finish is our biggest problem.
8. yesterday we cut turnovers. yes we did have 3 but that is cutting with us lol. and we FINISHED. we didnt give up a bullshit TD at the end of the game. Our seniors stepped up and made a play. You dont think Eilar/Jalen/Josh/Lo/etc noticed that RJ was going 110%? Thats what is going to get us to the BCS game. 28-13 goes to 31-13 instead of 28-20 and playing for an onside kick.
9. talking to some of the guys this weekend...they are very confident. no one is down. they are still hungry. they know they are good and they want to be great. they know that the fans took it hard, but u dont think they took it personal?
its a process..its a matter of them not falling into old ways of past teams. i am 10000% confident that this team will not. even with the turnovers they know they dominated usf/um. yesterday they finished. now pitt/purdue/af they have to build consistency in starting well as they have, and finishing. they have done it vs the big 10 champs and top 15 team. now the schedule gets a little easier so that builds consistency. interchanging qbs isnt going to do that. how can a team be confident when the coach isnt.

Hendrix already sat out last year, there is no redshirt (and well ND doesn't redshirt) to burn with him, only with Golson.
What exactly do you mean ND doesn't redshirt? I'm not being argumentative but I thought for sure ND had redshirted players before? Didn't Nix redshirt? Didn't Crist redshirt? Didn't Hendrix redshirt?
IMO no way should Golson see a snap this year and waste a year of eligibility.

ND doesn't redshirt. Nix is a sophomore, and after his senior year, if chooses to apply and get accepted to come back for a 5th year, then they apply the redshirt to his freshman year. That's how I understand it. It's weird.

ND does not red-shirt anyone. You can come back for a fifth year if you graduated and failed to play in one of your four previous years. This is also subject to NCAA and the coaching staffs approval.
You beat me, dammit.
No. They do not redshirt. Each player is expected to graduate in 4 years or less. What they do is hold a player out to reserve a year of eligibility, but not based on their academic class standing. When it comes time for a 5th year, they must apply to stay with the team and be a part of some type of post graduate program. It is not a guarantee that you remain with the team in the fifth year. It has to be earned.
And to come back for a fifth year at ND you have get accepted to a graduate program as you are expected to finish your undergrad in four years.
