Has anyone met him since he took over at ND? I work about 1 mile from the campus on Eddy St, and about a week ago it was raining like heck outside and I saw a kid about 14-15 (maybe) walking down the sidewalk while I was waiting at a red light, he was walking with a man dressed in nice slacks, a ND polo, a ND hat, carrying a ND umbrella. I was chicken necking him really bad because he looked like Brian Kelly. So yesterday I am sure I saw him in the grocery store, but people weren't crowded around him like they normally are with the players (cierre wood is a fan of the salad bar at Martin's and the poor thing can barely move when he's in there) so I'm not sure. Either it's Brian Kelly or he's got a twin, but he looks a little different than his pictures in the media, so I'm too chicken to go up and say anything to him. Has anyone else met him? Do you think he looks different in person?

I met him once by the Gug and got to talk to him and shake his hand. He looks just like his pictures, imo. He seems like a genuinely nice guy and definitely loves the university. He's not very tall, especially standing next to some of the players. It's pretty funny.

I also have to give a shoutout to the Martin's salad bar. Cierre knows what's up. Their deli is not too shabby either. Oh, and I met the Miller Highlife guy there once... I guess it was about a year and a half ago. Martin's has definitely been good to me over the years.

Other people I've met on campus:
**** Vitale at Rolfs
Lou Holtz at the bookstore
Mike Golic at the bookstore
Digger Phelps at Stanford Hall (motivational speech)
Regis Philbin in front of Zahm

I love going back to campus. I can't wait for USC this year.

Does Cierre Wood look "electric" even while he's getting some grub at the salad bar?

I bet he does.

Oh and I've walked past Kelly but haven't spoken to him. What would you guys say he is.....5'10" max?

He's a mean looking short guy though. Perfect fit for the Fighting Irish wouldn't you say?

Swarbrick couldn't have picked a more prototypical example for the head coaching position at Notre Dame.

I had a solid feeling back in mid season 2009, he was going to be the next head football coach at Notre Dame.

I'm 5'10" and I'd say we were about the same, with me probably taking the edge. 5'10" max for sure.

When Notre Dame was being discussed on ESPN early in the year, they asked Mike Leach about Coach Kelly. Leach said in his typical dry wit: "He looks directly out of central casting".

I met him at Legends. He was sitting down so it was hard to say how tall he was. He looked just like he does on TV,no mistaking him.

Ok well then it must be him! Maybe when he was at Martin's he looked disgruntled and people just stayed away! haha.

Cierre Wood looks good while getting his salad, yes indeed. I have a feeling he looks good doing anything.

Martin's has the best deli and salad bar in this are, IMO.

I'm sure I'll run into him sooner or later again and this time I'll get pics!

Some good friends of mine (SC fans though, grrrrrrr!) saw him before the season started last year. He was out in Pasadena recruiting a kid (I don't remember who) and they saw him at a local mexican restaurant with three or four assistants coaches. They were all in ND gear. My friends aren't the type to go up to people like that, but they knew they had to get his autograph for me. They said he was nice as could be and very personable. He signed the back of a paper menu for me (personalized too!) and chatted with them a bit. They said he was super cool and very laid back.

Go up to him. If it's not, you will probably make his day and if it is, I am sure he will be cool. You're nice and cute so I guarantee it will make his day whether it is actually him or not.

Especially if you are wearing your scrubs, he will really dig you. Oh wait, that's me that has the nurse in scrubs fetish. Sorry.

Man, I was just at Martin's like 2 friggin days ago and I didn't see any ND players!!! I was sure there'd be like 20 of them scattered about LOL. I did see a big white dude (ripped) at the Subway across the street from campus. Knew he was an athlete, but couldn't place the face. So I asked him if he balled at ND, and he was a hockey player that had just graduated. Does that count?

I did meet Bob Golic last year at the ND/USC luncheon here in SoCal. He took a picture with me, but he was much more interested in taking the picture with my wife (no lie; I told my wife he'd probably rather take a picture with her, and he laughed and agreed wholeheartedly. He was kidding of course - sort of). He's definitely got a bit of a cocky personality though, but nothing too bad. Also met Derrick Mays that day, who couldn't have been more gracious with his time. Seriously, I told him we'd let him go because we were sure he was busy, and he told us that was nonsense and went right on talking to us. Awesome guy.

At that luncheon, I saw BK speak. Like others have said, he looks the same exact same in person. I wrote about that luncheon last November on this site - and to repeat, he is just an awesome speaker. Captivating really, while Lane stumbled through a preplanned interview (but I digress).

Name drop time - went to Justin Tuck's wedding and got to meet him (great guy, GREAT family). Met Ryan Grant at the same wedding. My wife, then gf, knew him in college and they actually flew on the same flight together back to L.A. I had a separate flight and missed the chance to hang with him for 2 hrs in the waiting area - and this was right in the middle of the Favre saga! RRRRRRRGG!!!!

For the veteran ND fans here, I've met Tommy 'The Hawk' Hawkins several times, and he's the greatest. My aunt's boyfriend is his good buddy, and they work jazz/blues festivals together, so I get to see him at those quite a bit. The man is huge and as genuine as they come.

My wife knew a lot of the players - Shark, Zibby, Tuck, Stovall, Ryan Harris, Anthony Fasano, a lot of those guys. Perks of being a student at ND, where the football players live among the student body, as many ND grads here can attest to. She was really good friends with Mo Stovall in college. Said they were really cool guys, except for Zibby, who she said was quite conceited (her words, not mine!!!).

Do you go to the Martin's on 23 and Ironwood? That's where I've seen most of the players I've ever met. Probably since it's close to campus. If it wasn't hot as ballz outside I'm sure I'd see them running.

Yup, that very one. And yes, it was hot. Went to the practice field too and took a peak inside a crack in the fence, but it was empty (did see the new permanent video stand though - reminded me of the tragedy), save for a few soccer players getting in some practice in the area that can be viewed by anybody. I didn't expect to see anyone considering the heat and that it was 1:00, but it would have been nice LOL...

Can you blame him? He's one of the manliest men in the world.

Little old but I think this still counts---I was a senior when Kelly was announced as the head coach. A friend of mine and I were driving to the lab to do some research work when we noticed all the news crews outside of the Gug. We suspected what was going on and decided to see how close we could get. Amazingly, there was no security. Zero. We walked right into the room where CBK was finishing his speech for ESPN (or whoever was carrying the feed, not sure, I wasn't watching it on television!). He finished and started shaking the hands of suits I didn't know. In labclothes, I quickly got in the suits line and was like the 5th person to shake his hand: "Coach Kelly, I just wanted to be among the first to welcome you to Notre Dame!"

hey kissme,
just walk up and say "thank you", "looking forward to this season coach" or something to that effect.
if there is one thing we all know about BK, he's almost a politician first and football coach second. ever the baby kisser. you know?

in addition: never say "excuse me, i dont mean to interrupt...", to anyone famous. they take it as, "if you didnt mean to interrupt, why did you?"

I've met many a famous person in this area. Muhammad Ali, Sinbad, Lou Holtz, Tony Rice, Allen Pinkett, Rocket, Senators, Congressman, etc etc etc...I'm 99.9% sure it was Brian Kelly who walked past my car that day, and the way I practically crawled in my back seat to get a gander at him probably either made him think that A.) I recognized him as the head coach of ND or B.) I'm a creeper who needs a date. BAD.

Next time I'll just walk up and wish him a great season. As much as I volunteer, work, and shop here, I'll see him again.
