I think he deserves a shot as well but I don't think he's going to be successful now. I hope for his sake that he doesn't end up with happy feet like most QB's do after having knee surgeries. I know he came out after the one last year and overcame it but this is now number two. I don't think he starts for us this season.

He most definitely deserves a shot. It doesn't matter what the name of our starting QB is. Kelly will put the best player out there. There is no doubt about that. If it's Dayne, so be it. Great news that he is healthy. It puts the QB situation even more competitive.

I absolutely think he'll start this year, if healthy (always a big if with him). SOme things you need to think about:

1. Yesterday was an open practice where people who attended the coaching clinic could also attend practice. Multiple people on multiple boards have commented on how much of a stronger arm Crist has than Rees, and that Rees still noticeably can't power the ball down the field nearly as well Crist nor the rest of the QBs.

2. Chuck Molnar told people at the coaching clinic yesterday that they think that Crist would have won all 4 games to close the season as well b/c they changed their philosophy to a more running attack that sets up the pass, as opposed to when Crist was staring they expected him do A LOT more than what they asked Rees. That tells me at least who they think is the #1 guy.

3. Crist says he is MILES ahead of where he was last year as far as confidence with the knee and confidence in the offense. He watches hours of tape and now knows where his 2nd and 3rd reads are way better than he did last year.

4. Crist also says he has a much better relationship with Kelly this spring, and that they are on the same page this year.

5. Crist can run...Rees can't - AT ALL. Yes, Crist has had 2 knee surgeries but with a backup like Rees you don't have to handle him with kid gloves anymore. People forget, he rushed for 4 TD's (and had one taken away by a b.s. block-in-the-back call against Allen), and could scramble out of the pocket (he's not Michael Vick, but he can run a bit). He adds a bit of offense that Rees physically can't).

Now, I still love Tommy Rees and all that he did for us. BUt you put a running game, with a defense, and add a powerful arm and the talent of Dayne Crist, and IMO it's just a better team. You can add so much more to the offense.

You add all that stuff up, and sorry Crist Haters - he's starting this year. And if he stinks or gets hurt, we have a more than capable backup in Tommy Rees. Win-win (win)...

We should get a pretty good idea of how the team is shaping up today, as it's a fully open practice.

I agree Crist will get the nod...I think he deserves it as of today. I never thought he'd be back, so I mentally wrote him off last year. But here he is again...what do you do?

His ability to throw it down the field his great and all, but I was honestly a little disappointed in his decisions, accuracy, and touch at times. I'm trying to be objective...anyone would look "Off" compared to Jimmy, and at the time that was our frame of reference. We'll see...but if the O sputters, I wouldn't be shocked to see Rees pretty quickly...

Completely echo's my thoughts. I honestly did not believe he'd be back to compete this spring, and therefore, wrote him off. But, man...you gotta respect the kid to be back. I wrote earlier that after watching his spring practice interview he seems alot more confident in himself compared to last year during the same interview. His manuerisms, and the way he talked really impressed me, he carried himself like a leader, I was pleasently suprised. Hopefully that will translate into a more confident quarterback this fall leading to better decisions, and less tense play.

When it come's down to it, no matter what the situation, or how stressfull it is, you just have to relax, and have fun. You'll finish on top much more often. Montana, Brady..they all have an intense cool about them...they're confident, and just "do them".

Rees bulked up, and Hendrix is still the unknown variable. Gonna be an interesting spring...

I still think Gholson will get some packages, he looks alittle overwhelmed, but thats expected. Once he settle's down, I think think he'll come into his own.

Anyone think this QB fight will continue into fall camp?

yes...it really needs to...even if it isn't "real". Given Dayne's injury record, we need guys preparing as if they were still competing for the job.

I love the next man in slogan, and its true to a degree, but there is nothing like open competition for motivation.
