So I am getting a free preview of STARS on DirecTV this weekend. It's 11:00 am here in lovely Seguin, Texas and I am watching "RUDY" on Stars in HD.
I read a lot in here and post occasionally, I want to add my two cents to this debate.
When the movie came out, I was in College. In Oklahoma. Our school had no football team so most everyone was a SOONER fan a COWBOY fan or a fan of the College from their home state.
I have been a Notre Dame fan since I was 9 and saw those golden helmets on a color TV for the first time. My friends in College all wondered why. Why wasn't I a Longhorn fan or an Aggie Fan? Those two colleges are in Texas... Why not adopt the Sooners?
They never understood. This movie came out (and look I already knew then that most of it was embellishment for the sake of good cinema - but I didn't care then and I still don't care today) and my buddies all went to see it.
Next thing I knew they were all quoting the movie - walking through the dorm chanting RUDY, RUDY... For the first time ever, my buddies all started to understand. To this day they all send my emails either ragging on me if we're having a bad season or, talking down our efforts during the "up" years.
They all know where I stand and they have already assured me that I will have tickets when the Irish travel to Norman to play OU in a couple of years.
I still choke up when RUDY gets his acceptance letter.
I still want to beat up his older brother who ragged on him and stole his woman.
I watched today and still sat at the edge of my seat when he went in for that sack.
I don't know Daniel Ruettiger as a person.
But I do know RUDY the movie and when it comes to the film version, I am now - and will always be - A BIG FAN!
