He's a center. His dad played for ND 20 years+ ago. Smart kid with offers from Vandy, NU, and USF.

He's 2 or 3 stars...I think 3.

I'd heard he intended on walking-on despite the scholies that would give terrific educations. Footing the ND bill is quite a family commitment. I'm sure he will play his heart out. Brian Smith was another legacy from KC. Freeman went to two or three camps and must have impressed enough. Welcome, Tom.

I really liked that piece. If he works hit guts out and shows all the heart in the world in practices (which that piece seems to suggest) he could become a contributor even when he never sees the field. Let's just hope he combines it with enough talent to become the player he deserves to be with this kinda attitude. I'll be rooting for you son.

Yeah, its hard not to root for a kid like that. Spurning full rides to come to ND. Incredible. Just one of the many reminders of how special this university is.

Found another article on his committment. He had a good list of offers, glad to see ND still pulls in players that werent offered and just want to live out there dreams at ND. Link below.

Scout.com: Freeman's Dream Wins Out

all teams need impact players, great athletes, and great character players. A character player comes to practice everyday for 4 years, usually never see any significant playing time, never complains. They bring it each and everyday because they love the university, they love the opportunity of being at Notre Dame. I read the above article on him, and he appears to WANT to be at Notre Dame for all the right reasons. When those type of players are called upon to peform, they almost ALWAYS excede expectations, and their actions always unite, excite the team. an example of a past player with huge amount of character - Kevin McDougal....Thomas Freeman, welcome!

This reminds me of the guy in Rudy, who unlike Rudy, never got to play. Remember he said that he had several Big Ten scholarships, but he was a legacy at ND so he went there.

i think for a preferred walk on they also let you into the school even if you dont have the grades. because one of my friends got into cal as a prefered walk on and his grades were not that good. and cal you need a 4.0+

In Freeman's case, he had full rides to Duke, Harvard, and Northwestern among others, but chose to try to walk-on at ND since his father started on the Irish OL. Scout.com: Tom Freeman Profile

As far as Cal goes, 95% of their football players don't meet admission standards. Admissions: Who makes a habit of special admits? : Fanblogs College Football Blog

As far as ND goes, you have to meet admission standards, except for the 2 exceptions per year Charlie got.

I don't think all of the schools are completely honest in their reporting. Michigan offers good academics, but I remember them bringing in a barely literate 5-star (or maybe it was 4-star) recruit who washed out of the program. They had to make an exception for him. These schools could easily explain the admission as part of considering the whole person and the diversity they bring to the campus. The diversity part is accurate because Michigan would typically lack barely literate students without these admits.
