Nice article! Better than 02' should be a gimmie with the talent coming in. Of course, there is no guarantee that that talent will pan out.

My prediction is that we're a top 5 d by 2012. If the talent holds up, and we don't have a ton of injuries...we should be competeting for a Nat title in 2012. I know, a lot of "if's"......

I don't think we will be a top 5 Def in 2012. I actually think we will have a better defense in 2011 than 2012.

In 2012 our secondary is going to be very green. We will have two new starting corners and the only upperclassman corner will be junior Lo Wood. Granted our safety position will have veterans in Slaughter, Motta and McCarthy. After those guys the position is going to be very green with Hardy, Badger and incoming freshman.

We also lose Ethan Johnson and possibly KLM. The young DEs are talented, but won't have much experience.

As for the LBs we lose Flemming, Filer and possibly Manti. Again the young LBs are talented, but will lack experience.

IMO the defensive will be deadly in 2013 due to talent and experience at that point.

First impressions
Here's a look at how programs under first-year coaches in 2010 fared compared to '09:
Coach School 2010 2009 Net wins
Jimbo Fisher Florida State 10-4 7-6 +3
Charlie Strong Louisville 7-6 4-8 +3
Brian Kelly Notre Dame 8-5 6-6 +2
Willie Taggart Western Kentucky 2-10 0-12 +2
Sonny Dykes Louisiana Tech 5-7 4-8 +1
Mike London Virginia 4-8 3-9 +1
Skip Holtz USF 8-5 8-5 0
Robbie Caldwell Vanderbilt 2-10 2-10 0
Lane Kiffin USC 8-5 9-4 -1
Tommy Tuberville Texas Tech 8-5 9-4 -1
Joker Phillips Kentucky 6-7 7-6 -1
Derek Dooley Tennessee 6-7 7-6 -1
Todd Berry La.-Monroe 5-7 6-6 -1
Larry Porter Memphis 1-11 2-10 -1
Mike MacIntyre San Jose State 1-12 2-10 -1
Ruffin McNeill East Carolina 6-7 9-5 -3
Doc Holliday Marshall 5-7 7-6 -2
Turner Gill Kansas 3-9 5-7 -2
Rob Ianello Akron 1-11 3-9 -2
Jeff Quinn Buffalo 2-10 5-7 -3
Bobby Hauck UNLV 2-11 5-7 -3
Butch Jones Cincinnati 4-8 12-1 -8
Dan Enos Central Michigan 3-9 12-2 -9

Kelly finished 3rd behind Fisher and Strong but all ND's opponents were Div 1A. FSU had a win over Div 1 AA Samford and Louisville had a win over Eastern Kentucky. ND doesn't play I AA or lower opponents.
