I didn't realize I was so d*****d old until I saw this thread. No wonder I'm wandering around in oblivion most of the time and nobody seems to understand what I am talking about (except, maybe, DShans who, thank God, is older than me!).

Oh yeah, oh yeah , well ... um, er, that is to say "I know you are, but what am I?" Oh, crap, that didn't work --- how 'bout "Your mother wears army boots?" [Though that rejoinder failed miserably when I tried to use it a while back. I think it was in an exchange with ACamp.]

Facts is facts. I'm older than you (though Old Man Mike has us both beat!) and always will be until the day I die. With luck you'll "lap" me by a decade after that and still be cranking up the volume on Sympathy for the Devil while enlightening the most current generation of young pups.

Oh, well, as they say, there are some advantages to this senility--I meet new people every day--even if they are my family and friends. (Yeah, I know, that one's probably even older than Old Man Mike.)

24 going on 25 here.
Just also want to say, I don't post on here very often, but I read this site almost daily. It is so very nice to have a great source with good people to keep up on my favorite college team.

I think it would be wonderful to die in my sleep like my grandpa. Not crying and sreaming in terror like the other people in his car. ba-dum-bump! I'm here all week folks!

Not to bring anyone down or bum them out (maybe I should start a new thread: "Are there any other Old Geezers posting on this board?") This brought to mind my mother.

She suffered from Alzheimer's as well as an inoperable cancer. It was a mixed blessing. The short term memory loss associated with the senility/dementia kept her from dwelling on the cancer and the cancer took her before the Alzheimer's turned her into a mental vegetable with a blank stare and the inability to recognize her children unless shown a picture when we were no more than 10.

When the family gathered for what turned out to be her last Christmas in 1999 (no easy task with people coming into Orlando from MN, NY, ME, WA, CA, CO, MI, OR and FL) I'd been sitting with and talking with my mother when I got to her place after flying in. I went to make a phone call. Maybe a minute, probably less. I returned to the living room to my seat next to her on a couch.

She gasped "Oh, look, Dickity-doo is here, with a beard!" This is a nickname that hadn't been in play since I was about 4 or 5. I'd completely forgotten about it ... and no one but she is allowed to use, by the way.

As a (further) rambling side note, we spent Christmas at my older sister's in Jacksonville and I drove her back to Orlando two days later. We got back to her Assisted Living apartment to find a newspaper at her door. She started on the Sunday crossword puzzle and asked for my help when she got stuck. It was the same puzzle she'd worked on the day before and she'd gotten "stuck" on the same damn clues. I think I did a credible job of pretending that I had to think about answers to the clues I'd already solved.

Don't get me wrong, I have a healthy (some say twisted) sense of humor. Life is thrilling, tragic, surprising, happy, sad, etc. It's helpful and important to find inspiration for smiles throughout all that you get.

My apologies for the length of this post. Nanker and Go Irish just dredged up some 10 year old silt.

Man, watch out! I have a younger brother who went to Purdue. He went in with his head on all straight, like yours seems to be now. But when he came out, he was all screwed up, and is to this day. Just a warning!
