Received an offer on Friday; plans to take an official visit. Reputedly one of the preeminent long snappers in the nation.

This offer makes no sense to me. They already have Cowart on the team and the kid is to small to be the short snapper. I guess the coaching staff is not real confident with the remaining recruits we have out there.

makes perfect sense we have 4 long snappers on our roster 2 are seniors 1 junior and cowart is a sophomore so if he red shirts his freshman year it will all work out.

I've heard this kid is good....but is he too small?
is it just me, or is 185 pounds way too thin to be on the line?

not at all for a long snapper. they want you tall and lean but have the ability to cover the punt as well. so if your 300 lbs. your not getting down there to tackle anyone. how many games have you watched where they say "tackled by the long snapper". it happens quit a bit.

I also trust in Kelly and crew, but thought we had a scholly "crunch". His offer list looks nice and his SATs are no joke. I agree if we redshirt him, it works out in the future for the program...just did not know we had the room. If he commits we will have to dive into the numbers as for now I will remain unassuming.

My understanding is that referees are making it a point of emphasis to flag excessive roughness on the snappers since they are totally vulnerable. Size therefore is not the biggest deal for such a kid.[In many games you might see the snapper just get laid back on his butt from the interior push, rather than being asked to "put-up-a-fight" at the line]. [we are talking about long snapping here a la punts]. If Kelly sees scholarship room [that we don't] then taking the long snapper is probably sensible as he is probably terrorized by the thought that Braxton Cave might have to do it. I'll bet that Kelly doesn't have a lot of confidence in anyone doing that job except Cowart. And what if something happened to him??

actually they cant be touched until one second after the ball is snapped otherwise the return team will get a "roughing the snapper" call. since their heads are down leaving them vulnerable thats why you hardly see long snappers getting touched until after the punter kicks the ball.

Is this sarcasm? You don't want to have more than 1 long snapper on scholarship at a time. Its not a position that needs to be developed. Either you can do it or you can't. If Cowart can do it you don't need another one until he graduates. A lot of teams use a walk on.

dear friend that is not sarcasm. that indeed is what we have on the roster. so in saying that if we had 4 this year alone and are losing 2 wouldnt it only make sense if possible to get another good long snapper?

sarcasm would be the "dear friend" part. i for one is 100% behind kelly with this decision.
read the top of thread what i said.

Washington game...on the field goal from 2 ft away...then we stopped them again on the goal line for a total of 7 plays within the 5 yard line.

The two we are losing are walk ons. It doesn't make sense to replace them with a scholarship player when we have Cowart for two more years. This offer leads me to believe we are not sitting well with the remaining recruits we have left on our board.

what if hes an up grade over cowart thought?

I'd rather save the scholarship. I mean Cowart was supposedly the best long snapper coming out of high school two years ago. Unless the staff thinks Cowart is awful I can't see having two long snappers on scholarship. If things don't look good this year I'd rather save the scholarship for next year or give it to a fifth year player.

they dont have to think hes awful maybe this a different side, i look at it like this you and i are fans thats it. not apart of the staff we dont have the skinny. so its just best to think there making the right decision. they are the ones running our beloved football team. to think you know more then them is actually amusing.

I never said I know more than Kelly and his staff but to have two long snappers on scholarship is odd. It makes me think Kelly believes we are not in good position with our remaining recruits.

By the time we heard Shane Ray was "solid" with Missouri, Kelly and company were already employing options 2 and 3 (maybe this offer was it). I assure you that whatever we know as fans is simlar to the saying "a day late and a dollar short." Meaning we do not know more then the tip of the iceberg for behind the scenes decisions, and the little we know leaks out much later then we think. Other examples.

Offer to Nick Martin
-At the time, ND nation thought Richardson was a lost cause...then Prestwood decommitted

Decommitment of Justice Hayes
-Reopened on 11/21, fans and writers all call it "bizarre", maybe Kelly had something to do with it offering Carlisle on 11/3 right after Hayes visited for the Tulsa game, made him concerned enough to visit again the next home game, Utah 11/13, where the staff didnt pay attention/answer questions yadda yadda etc...bottom line is we dont know and the staff does.

LOL! I have to agree with you bigeasy. (maybe because we are both "bige's") That kid can snap very well. If we have him, then our opponents don't. We have a great #2 if Cowart is out for any reason. Its a win win I think. I guess we won't be offered assistant coaching jobs if he gets the job though.

From what I've gathered this kid is a phenom of a long snapper. Like, ridiculously good.

I trust Kelly's judgment here.

BINGO (index finger touching nose while pointing) thats it my man. listen i think the more we sit back and just let things happen the clearer it will become. everyone wants to be a profit, but why? if we can get him and have the scholarship why not is my question? everyone wants the flashy skill positions and thats all great. but then that also makes me question the fan that doesnt get this. have you ever coached any type of football? have you even played any type of football? if i were to offer any of you 1/3 of a million dollars youd be pretty stoked right? well 1/3 of the team is special teams which is really important when it comes to winning games and playing championship caliber football.

Although thing to think about....how many times have we been .001 seconds away from getting punts blocked? I would bet Brian Kelly is legitimately disturbed by it and wants an upgrade. This kid snaps it in .06 seconds. Sweet freakin' Christ that is impressive.
