Got to go to "The Game is on Luncheon" today for the first time. Some quick thoughts for anyone else who cares (sorry, kinda long) :

1. The SC fans there were MUCH different than the ones I encounter in and around the Coliseum. The respect between the fans for the rivalry was palpable. Still hate their guts though.

2. Lots of friendly sh!t-talking between the two sides' speakers. Lots of golf cart jokes by the ND speakers, most notably Tommy Hawkins and Mike Golic. Those were sweet and were a running joke throughout the 2 hours.

3. The SC speakers took swipes at the NCAA the entire luncheon. Some of the jokes were funny...however I was waiting for someone to remind them that they dug their own grave with their whopping one compliance worker during a time where there campus was infiltrated with agents, runners and other thugs, but the reminder never came.

4. To their credit, JK McKay and Pat Haden were REALLY funny IMO. One thing I didn't know was that Haden, a lifelong ND fan growing up, spent his senior year living with the McKays 'cause his parents moved up north and he wanted to finish his senior year at Amat. That sealed the deal for him to go to SC. Even Haden admitted this was a violation.

5. Got to meet Derrick Mays, one of my favorite players growing up. Not only was he a great guy, when my wife said that he was probably busy and that we should go, he said that that was nonsense and talked football with us for a bit longer before we relunctantly excused ourselves. The highlight of the day for me.

6. The Hawk got off the line of the day. Kiffin spoke before BK, but instead of doing a speech, he did a sort question and answer thing with McKay, which I though was really odd. I was hoping that BK didn't do the same thing. When it came time for Hawkins to introduce Kelly, he said something to the effect that he could interview Kelly like McKay did, but that he didn't have to b/c Kelly could speak for himself (an obvious dig at Kiffin). The ND fans howled with laughter and the SC kind of made a noise that you do when you know someone just got dissed (Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!). Kiffin took it well, but damn, that was funny.

7. Kiffin is clearly not the speaker that Kelly is, but he's got a good sense of humor. He said a couple of things that made me laugh, and I don't know, he's not the same d-bag that he was at Tennessee. I think he knows what a short leash Haden has him on. Actually, as the coach of SC, he's still a d-bag, but not nearly the one Carroll was IMO.

All in all, a great time for me. Got to hear some great speakers and meet some great people, including Pat Haden and Mike Golic, among others. Can't wait for the game! Go Irish!!!!

Kiffin is still a douchebag. No matter how large or small.

Sounds like you had a good time, NDinL.A. I just hope that the rest of us (far too many looking for a place to watch the game) have the same smile on our face tomorrow night as you must have had earlier today!

Glad to hear you had a good time and that it wasn't the sort of event which would put you to sleep as those snoozers happen from time to time.
