BIG IMPORTANT UPDATE FROM FAMILY DINNER:

My girlfriend is from Northbrook and happens to be visiting me this weekend for the Army game. Turns out her younger brother went to school with and was really close friends with the girl in question here. Her brother/parents went to the wake, funeral and everything. After talking with her, this story is SO FULL OF **** IT ISN'T EVEN FUNNY.

First of all, the girl here had serious mental issues for a long time. Like really deep seeded depression issues and suicidal thoughts among other things.

Second, maybe this was in the article and I missed it, but this all happened a very long time ago. She said the funeral was months ago. Why on earth would this all be coming out now, months after the fact, if the story and jump-to-conclusion performed by the Chicago tribune had any merit?

Third, does this sound like a case of parietals violations to anyone else? "Knock on the door" interrupted it? Chances are she was making out with the guy or something, an RA knocked on the door and to avoid the serious ramifications of violating parietals she claimed "unwanted sexual advance by an aquaintance."

What I would also like to add on a more somber note is that she said that the girl seemed to finally be doing better at SMC after a long history of not doing so well at all. As such, some thought she may have gone off her medication as she didn't feel like she needed it anymore. It's just as likely that the lack of meds + someone being mean to her at lunch = OD than what the Tribune wants you to infer.

Officially one of the most idiotic slow-news-day stories ever.

but you have no trouble inferring she killed herself by OD'ing or due to a failed test.

id bet my left arm if this were a football player at (name your SEC school here), that the benefit of the doubt would be going to the girl, not the football player.

You, sir, obviously lack some serious reading comprehension. What I offered is a possible alternative and in no way am I asserting that is what happened. I am playing Devil's advocate and giving other possible scenarios that are plausible. My point is that you cannot infer one definitive conclusion.

What the Tribune did was infer a conclusion, that they then presented to readers, from very few facts.

Anyways, after my last post and discussions with some people who knew the girl, I'm done with this thread. If anyone has a question they want answered they can send me a PM.

ESPN picked up the story. Now, false rumors and false facts will emerge real soon. I wonder if USC paid for this story to come out. Just saying.

Wow, if this was a story about USC or Alabama all these comments would be talking about how bad those programs are. But because it possible involves Notre Dame it is "irresponsible journalism".
A poor girl is dead, yet more concern is about protecting the image of Notre Dame and whether or not because she is dead if there is still a case.
I can understand the feelings of the parents wanting to know if there is a connection between and alleged rape and her death. And I would be curious about the silence from the school. It seems apparent that the girl had some issues, but please have some compassion.
first get your facts...no rape, and actually not many facts at all. This is definitely a tragedy a young life was lost but there are no facts available so any conclusions are all guesses.

Was there ever a doubt the ENTERTAINMENT and Sport Programming Network would pick this story up. It was never about the girl or her family but rather about page views and getting attention. Now, there will be pressure and speculation to find out who the player was and the presumption of innocence will most likely be thrown out the window. What happened to this young woman was tragic but does not justify what this kid will now most likely go through.

thats the kind of reliable facts we needed to even out the story. some family dinner gossip. btw, my sisters best friend went to college with this guy whose girlfriends mom's ex husband knew the mom of this girl and........oh, never mind.

i suppose you are also claiming you are not inferring anything here?

nothing like people tearing you down after you have died.

Not to be rude or mean but if you consider or do killing your self this is esactly what you want. You want attention and thats it. So for you to say he is tearing her down is crazy because she had so mental issues to want to kill herself.

I don't think people lack compassion here. No one has been charged with any crime. If you want to lead the crusade or carry the cross for SC or Alabama go preach on their fansites.

then it would be nice if people didnt jump to the conclusion that this girl had mental illness and just did this for attention without having the facts......just as they dont want anyone jumping to conclusions about what this football player may have done.

Notre Dame accused of mishandling sexual assault investigation after college freshman's suicide

id be more concerned about this (if it proves to be true):

According to records found by the newspaper, university police never turned any evidence over to the county police's special victims unit, which is better trained to investigate the cases to determine their credibility

i cant think of any legitimate reason why ND would keep this internal when they are not really trained to sort out fact from fiction in an investigation, other than to keep a lid on the story (which of course is not a legit reason), especially once the county was investigating her death.

Guys--can we let this end? As someone who has extensive experience with unfortunate youths who take anti-depressant medication I believe we should let this all play out in the forum best equiped to handle it--the ju. While not trying to make sweeping generalizations, many are prone to exaggeration if not flat out lies. Moreover, if someone is wrestling with suicidal ideation prior to any event, real or perceived, then there can be any trigger. So, let's look at the facts in the light of day, realize adding ND to any news (or worse, cyber-journalism) story is done solely for ratings. I, for one, will not give these sites their intended result.

I know a few girls at St. Mary's and heard about this situation a while ago. It seems to be a bit more than a poorly reported story.

i have worked over 17 years with people from all walks of life who have taken anti depressants, including young men and women from many different backgrounds. leaving this story aside altogether, i find your "generalization" about people who take anti depressants irresponsible and inaccurate, at best.

why state you are not trying to make a sweeping generization when that is exactly what you did?

dskoo65... you show a great deal of compassion and that is great but you seem to forget, and you show no compassion for the young man who will now surely be revealed because of this story...

I know a bunch of South Bend and St. Joe's County cops, and they all say that this is nothing more than a poorly reported story.

Listen ****tard. It takes a lot to get me pissed off on the internet, but when you completely disrespect me, my information and the people I know... I take serious issue.

My girlfriend is Kathleen O'Connor (ND '10) and my source is the O'Connor family, who attend the same church as the victim and are very close family friends. Who's your source? Some hack writer from the Tribune with newspapers to sell?

And do you even know the definition of an inference? Look it up. What the Tribune is doing is making an inference on no evidence. What I am doing is pointing out that there could be a multitude of causes for what happened and not asserting a single one as the answer.

In short, go **** yourself. You are single handedly dragging down the collective IQ of this thread and this website.

PS. Thank god for this language filter so I don't have to worry about taking the time to censor myself.

1. if this story was about USC the comments made would be killing the school, and everyuone who says its not true is full of BS because if we go to any thread about a USC accusation there is not a single post commenting on poor journalism

2. These are just accusations at this point but it certainly doesn't reflect well on the school regardless

3. I dont wanna know who the player is unless it becomes a real issue.

For anyone who's interested, you can go to WSBT-TV - wsbt.com (the tv affiliate of the South Bend Tribune) and read the article reprinted there, along with statements issued today by the University and by Kelly.

SMC sucks and so do all the girls there that think that they belong at ND.

MODS???? This is absolutely awful. This better be taken care of, sooner rather than later. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of this poor girl as this must be very hard for them after already dealing with a tragic death. Hopefully the situation is not what it seems, but we certainly want the truth to come out. We run a high-class program, and there should be NO exceptions to that.

Rumor on campus is that the player being accused is Shembo...

That's very concerning, he looks like a really talented kid and could contribute a great deal in the future. I still don't think anything will come of this, but it's concerning to see a solid prospect involved in this.

Very true.

I just hope this doesn't turn into an Abram Elam (his potential was sky high too and is in the NFL last i checked) case and he gets kicked off the team before everything comes to light

This is an extremely sensitive and tragic subject with a lot of emotions running high for a lot of people.
This discussion needs to remain civil and talked about with sensitivity for those affected directly or indirectly, or else close the thread. This, in my opinion is not discussion. It is everyone trying to reach their own conclusion about something that none of us know about.
