Damnit this defense is making pull my hair out.
This was the most points Michigan has allowed since a 58-6 loss to Cornell in 1891.
AND WE WON.
I'm damn happy we won, I'm damn happy we're going to a bowl, But RichRod needs to go I still think. PF-PA this season is 350-305.
Just take a look at Harbaughs defense. You guys know about it, he waxed ND this season (no offense or shots intended)
And Harbaugh's defense was waxed by Oregon's spread.
As bad as UM's defense has been, they are very young, with 12 of the 18 players who saw the field last Saturday freshmen or sophomores. And they don't need a dominant defense; with an average defense they would be undefeated.
Rather than trash BK, ND fans should look at where UM is in their third year replacing a pro style offense with a spread. Keep in mind that RR had 13 returning offensive starts his first year (one player) so he was literally starting from scratch. To successfully run the spread it takes the right kind of fast athletic players, conditioned for a fast game, with enough experience in the offense that plays become instinctive, and it's nowhere more important than on the offensive line.
UM's offensive line was a disaster the first year, not very good last year. With RR's first full recruiting class in their second year in his sytem how are they doing?
UM's offense for the season:
- #1 in total offense in the B10, #5 nationally
- #1 in rushing offense in the B10, #9 nationally
- #1 in sacks allowed in the B10, #4 nationally
- #1 in first downs in the B10, #13 nationally
- #2 in scoring offense in the B10, #12 nationally
- #2 in passing offense in the B10, #28 nationally
- #4 in pass efficiency in the B10, #14 nationally
And keeping in mind the running backs, quarterbacks (from 89 through Henne, every qb that started for UM went on to start in the NFL, and a couple of weeks ago there were 3 UM qb's listed as starters on Sunday), and receivers (A Carter, B Edwards, Manningham, Arrington, etc.) that have come out of UM, their 2010 offense:
- On track to be the all time most productive offense in Big 10 history, blowing the previous Michigan record away (Grbac, Desmond Howard, Tyrone Wheatley in 92 have previous record)
- Most yards per carry in UM history
- Most yards per play in UM history
- Most yards by a receiver in a single game in UM history
- Most total yards in a game by a qb in UM history
- Most rushing yards by a qb in Big 10 history (broke this all time record with four games to go)
- #1 rusher in the nation
- Most career 200/200 yd games in NCAA history (only 5 players did this once in a career, DR did it twice in his first season starting)
- Most passing yards by a UM qb in a single game in UM history
- Most points per game at UM in post-WWII era
- Third highest rushing yards per game in UM history, sixth in Big 10 history
- Third highest passing yards per game in UM history
- Most first downs per game in UM history
- DR is only 76 yards away from breaking the all time UM season total yards record (I think Navarre has the record), should happen in the first quarter Sat
It's not a one man show, backup qb's have been responsible for around 100 points so far this year. And it's still a very young offense, losing only one starter for next year.
To get there they have suffered some of the worst performances in UM history, but their patience has been rewarded with a record-setting offense. By 2012 both sides of the ball should be much improved from this year and they will be hitting their stride.
My point? ND fans need to show patience. BK has been wildly successful wherever he's coached, and once he has time to get his players in place and gain experience, ND will rise to the top.
