Lack of Killer Instinct

ND should have destroyed Pitt and Boston College easily but I feel that the lack of killer instinct from our players (Charlie Weis fault) is hampering the team's progress. I wish for once ND would just go out and bury teams like Urban Myer does in Florida. I'd like to see them play nasty and mean. Winning with class is great but until you dish out an *** whopping you'll never develop a killer instinct. Forget about being a gentleman ND.....you need to step on their throats and stomp on their heads until they bleed to death. We'll never be a BCS team until we develop this mentality. Go Irish!

And lose the past few weeks? We are getting there, but I have to agree that a blowout would be nice, lets put one on Western Mich.

I'm worried about West Michigan. I hope we don't underestimate them.

To quote H. L. Mencken:

"Every normal man must be tempted at times to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin to slit throats."

I love ND but I'm not sure if we'll ever develop the same killer instincts that other college football team has because ND football has no competition in South Bend. They will always be love.....good or bad. I feel that this is the main reason our players became complacent during the Charlie Weis/Willingham era. Unlike here in southern California where there are plenty of college and professional sports teams. You better be good or the fans will find other things to do or just stay home and watch drive by shootings. (-:

It was babble.. This whole thread is babble, nothing but some fan who can't get with the times who wants to fall back and take shots at the pervious coaching staff. Some people just don't know how to move on..

Let's set aside the gratuitous emoticon for the nonce. Just what the hell is your point? That only the cruel survive? That Filipinos cherish barbarity?

I still remember the (South) Dining Hall's attempt at Adobo in in '71 (or '72) as part of their attempt to prepare and present international cuisine. I touted it to dorm mates. Sadly, it was slop in comparison to the dish I'd eaten at a grade school and high school classmate's home. I caught a lot of shyte that night.

Oh, what we we talking about?

Winning decisively is one thing. Winning viciously is another.

1.) Ok, so you say Notre Dame has no competition in South Bend. Well duh, they're the only FBS team in South Bend.
2.) Then you say Notre Dame is love, whether it's good or bad.
3.) And becuase Notre Dame is love, our players became unsatisfied during the years Weis and Willingham were coach.
4.) Then you randomly say that there's lots of college and professional teams in Southern California.
5.) And then you say that you better be on your best behaviour, or everyone will watch drive by shootings...???
6.) And of course, that strange smile at the end that shows you get enjoyment out of drive by shootings.

This makes no sense!

Breaking it down for you:

Notre dame is loved, both in South Bend and just generally. Therefore, win or lose, they will be on TV, have a full stadium, be the talk of the town, etc...

Compare this to SoCal. If USC isn't winning, people aren't watching them. They're watching the Kings or the Lakers or the Hollywood gossip boards or, and this is where the smiley comes in to indicate a joke, drive by shootings.

Therefore... ND players get complacent and lazy. Basically, it's the Chicago Cubs argument. Also, if you read the whole paragraph and just switch "loved" for "love" it makes a lot more sense.

Now, I definitely don't agree with this. ND seniors who got snowballs in the face may not have felt "loved." Also, while the team may always be popular (or not, nobody thought Army would ever suck 60 years ago)...there is still plenty of INDIVIDUAL competition. If anything, players got complacent (if they did) during the Weis years because the depth chart was just too thin: the talented recruits didn't have anybody breathing down their backs or battling them in practice. I don't think the knowledge that they would be playing in full stadiums and on national TV made anybody lazy.

But yea, we do need to develop a killer instinct. We'll crush WM, but that doesn't mean anything. We need to put away a good team when we have them on the ropes.

A killer instinct is when a team finishes off a team after sensing that they've got the opponent on the ropes. ND hasn't done this the past couple weeks because they simply can't execute consistently, not because they get complacent. You can't ask for a killer instinct from a team that is still learning a new system. This has absolutely nothing to do with being loved (by the way, there are more haters than supporters) or a lack of competition.

"Killer instinct" applies more to a boxer than to a football team. But in regards to ND football, I kinda think the athletes are always busting their asses for the team. Every year except for '07. I kinda sensed a sort of sabotage on that team from within, especially when the center can't get a simple snap back to the QB. I actually "blame" the '07 season on TW. (I'm just a fan behind a comp and wish Coach TW a great life)

Just to backtrack a bit, I thought the Davies years had athletes full of killer instinct, and although I didn't like him as head coach, I thought ND had become suicidal with their scheduling. I don't think any coach in the country, not even Rockne's ghost could have gone undefeated.

I thought Willingham was a full speed train wreck. I cussed out loud when he was hired, and puppies and kitties (the cute ones) hid under couches. I thought Ty's athletes had the killer instinct (weren't they Davies' recruits?), but Ty was a total disaster. I was not even fooled by the good start. I called his demise precisely to their first loss. I remember talking to a colleague of mine and telling him Ty's team would completely collapse by game 9. He asked me why I was so negative. I told him to wait and see. By game 9, my colleague was ready to start betting on everything I said.

Anyway, I see this current team as busting its *** on every play. I am so much liking the total program. Few penalties. Special teams are as good as it has been in YEARS, if not my entire life of watching ND football (not dynamic, but SOLID), this is my favorite D since the Alvarez years, and things are looking solid.

Gotta agree with this guy about lacking killer instinct. Although the rest of it was kinda wierd.

But it is a "system" and historical thing when it comes to a team game, rather than individual athletic thingy. Seems to me at least.
