I refrained until now throwing my two cents in about the game because I was a little too emotional to trust my rationality. So I am starting a "cooler heads prevail" thread which I hope the moderators don't lump in with the other rant about the game threads.

1. We have a team which will claw and scratch until the gun goes (and then some). Never NEVER did I see any quit in this team and very little panic. That is a distinct positive to take away from a pretty bitter loss.

2. One has to hand it to coach Rodriguez, he certainly worked the clock effectively on that game winning drive. If there had been an extra 20 clicks on that clock this might have been a recovery day from a very long victory celebration.

3. We can dissect individual plays (the decision to go for the td...the flea flicker sent in for Rees to run, etc.) but then if we throw out every aggressive decision we never see a 260 lb super-TE sprinting 95 yards on a perfectly thrown long bomb out of our own end zone. This team is going to play aggressively and I can't complain about that.

4. Dennard Robinson is a collegiate phenom and will single-handedly make Michigan a potent offensive machine for the next 3 years. The only way he can be truly shutdown is injury. The gaudy numbers belie the fact that our defense held Michigan under 30 points even though we came up with zero turnovers.

5. Dayne Crist in the game = we win. Who would not have taken a one chance crack at a game winning td from the Mich 27 if you knew we would play almost a full half without Crist. Did he make that throw? No. If he had that comeback would be side by side with the Chicken Soup Cotton Bowl finish...actually it would have been better. The guy is the real deal and he looks better with every game.

6. I was disappointed again with Michael Floyd's performance...but I expect him to turn it around and have a great season. (hopefully not a great last season)

7. I am stunned by how well Carlo Calabrese plays the pass. He doesn't have the speed to run step for step with receivers, but he reads the play well and arrives with plenty of ill humor the moment the pass is caught. And he knows where the 1st down stripe is on 3rd down passes. For a kid who is supposed to be a 1 dimensional run stuffer, he looks pretty good to me in coverage.

8. In hindsight it would have been nice to have the corners playing tighter on that last drive. But the scheme had stifled the Mich. offense for the entire 2nd half and we were one play (3rd and 5) from forcing a longish fg from a kicker who wouldn't make it to regionals in punt pass and kick. Hindsight is 20/20.

9. Coach Kelly realizes he needs a simplified package for his backup(s) to run now, it will get done. And despite what some people say, Montana was not that bad. If he had a bit less to think about and could stick with a few familiar plays, he will do in a pinch. I didn't see enough of Rees to make a judgment.

I agree, in large part.

I'm a bit disappointed with just how much Floyd has been held in check. Granted, rolling coverage to blanket one all-American receiver is not the hardest thing to do in the world, but he hasn't caught a touchdown pass yet! That is his own fault though with the fumble against Purdue. TJ Jones and Kyle Rudolph are obviously benefiting from the coverage schemes, but still.

I hope Floyd has some ridiculous games in the future, while he's still wearing blue and gold. But don't hold your breath, Crist's deep ball is suspect--inconsistent at best--and Floyd's forte is the deep ball.

On another note about the Michigan game. It didn't change any preconceived views. Brian Kelly is still a terrific coach in my mind and Notre Dame is talented and mistake prone. People need to realize both the offensive and defensive schemes were changed entirely and they played with a former walk-on QB for 40% of the game and they still should have won.

Notre Dame won the second half 17-7, so Kelly obviously out-coached Rodriguez. Chalk this loss up to injury, nothing more.

Lastly, Carlo Calabrese is a pleasant surprise.

EDIT: That rant was directed at you, mainly the negativity here. Did people expect Notre Dame to go 12-0? I remember when my Buckeyes had to replace the 2002-2003 studs and went 8-4 in unimpressive fashion in 2004. Notre Dame is replacing just as much and changing all of their schemes and they still looked impressively competent. People need a bit of patience.

ITTC - Great synopsis. Ditto.

This is not a "jump ball" offense like Weis ran. Floyd is a "jump ball" pro, however Crist is not adept at throwing that ball (largely b/c Clausen got 110% of reps under Weis). Respect for Floyd got us to the 27 in two plays. He was wide open underneath as they aggressively played him deep.

Weis took the Pro option in practice. All non first string players are to learn by observation not repetition. And then they are surprised when the backups don't perform as well as or better than the starters. (Observe the Indy Colts.)
Floyd needs to work on getting open; if he has double coverage, the other receivers need to get open with one-on-one coverage, and Crist needs to look elsewhere. On the interception he threw at Floyd, he was locked on him 100%.

I agree completely Ditto

To Irish--Core: your analysis is perfectly on target, and I wish that some of our fellow board members would listen to you and return to sanity [some of the commentary has been incredible]. As to Floyd being reduced in impact: in some ways he has not, as Kelly pointed out that Floyd has been automatically doubled every time he is in a wide set-up. Kelly noted that this has freed Rudolph as well as others, and TJ has benefitted while Theo has not [Kelly made gentle but firm comments that Theo had better step it up.] He then said that he will call more plays in which Floyd is lined up in the slot and thereby harder to instantly find and double. He also said that Floyd needs to catch the ball when he does get a chance. Coach obviously thinks that some of our crew are not yet executing the plays, despite a generally good effort at expending energy/aggression. He says that he has no future worries about effort, but a lot about how fast some of the guys are going to get the details right.

Quickest way to get over this lose is to beat Sparty! We need it too because Stanford is next. In the last 10 years...I actually hate Mich. St. more than Michigan.

I like Michigan State more because they generally don't beat us by 25+ points every 3-4 years.

I.T.T.C. - Nicely done! I agree with your analysis... all things considered, I think we have more pieces in place than I would have thought when Charlie rode off into the sunset.

The Irish *will* get there under Kelly; it will take some time for everything to come together. I still stand by my 9-3 prediction for 2010.
