How loud is it?

All this talk about the green-out (which, as much as I would love, will never happen) plus having actually been to the game last week has me wondering: how intimidating of a place is Notre Dame to play. I was sitting pretty high up, so it was tough to get a sense for what the noise level would have been like at field level, but I do have a few observations:

1) NDs student section is as active and loud as any, but it is small. As far as I could tell, it only really comes into play when the other team's offense has the ball inside the twenty on that side of the field.
2) A lot of fans don't cheer. They're too old and "dignified".
3) The fans who do cheer tend to scream their faces off.
4) The bands are very close to the field and make a lot of noise.
5) The stadium doesn't have a lip or anything at the top that would keep noise in, not sure how much this matters since everybody's yelling towards the field anyways.

So, my question is for people who have been to games at both ND and other major college venues (Big House, Penn/Ohio State, Alabama): does the noise level at Notre Dame compare?

I have been to two games at ND, the most recent the Brady-Shark to beat UCLA game, and I went and watched OU-Texas Tech at OU a couple seasons ago when Tech was undefeated and OU beat them by a million. I would say when there was a big play the noise level was about equal, but the average noise throughout the game was louder at the OU game than at ND.

Been to plenty of ND home games and you are correct. Lots of old farts litter the stands and refuse to cheer openly for anything good that ND does. Even saw a few blue hairs yell at ND fans for cheering for our boys and standing on potential scoring plays.

I have also been to Tennessee for an ND game and it was the loudest stadium I have ever been in.

I've been to many games in the south and, imo, you have Neyland Stadium and Death Valley at the top and frankly, its not even close guys. With the expcetion of the late 1990's FSU crowds, those two stadiums are as close to being inside of a drum as you can get.

ND was the loudest I have heard it this past weekend but it was probably the biggest game I have been to so far. I hope its even louder for Pitt when I go.

The Big House is loud, I was at the ND UM game last year and I'd say it was quite a bit louder. 30,000 extra fans cheering and the upper walls around the top help.

Game Day in the Stadium

Game Day in the Stadium

I really, really hate to say it, but......

My son is at Alabama. That stadium is unbelievable!
EVERYONE does EVERY cheer, stands the entire game and are just loud!!!!!!!!!!
That includes students, alumni, townies, and the other 90,000. It was amazing! I loved it for my son.

But then I thought back to my last game, 2 years ago, and everyone on the East side of the stadium sitting and watching.

We have a way to go!!!

Your stadium suffers from the same design flaw that ours does, it's one big bowl, therefore the sound just goes straight up. Our recent addition was supposed to help by some 30% in keeping the noise in.

I went to Nebraska in 1999 when they were playing K-State. I think it was #4 vs #5 or something. That crowd was pretty crazy. Reminded me more of concert. At ND it's more of a family atmosphere with kids and grandparents. It get's loud sometimes for the bigger games but for the most part I wouldn't put ND in the same category as the bigger programs as far a stadium noise.

My first experince in the stadium almost put me in a trance but the next 4/5 games I screamed my @$# off and thats rare for me. I got it though when I looked around and saw the dignified as you called it and any other first timers who are in awe of the place. Let it rip man coming from a guy who played another sport a high level and had to get over the feeling of being JOE fan. This is my 'Irish' baby and I should be here to help out, now when I'm there I feel like I have a job to do. Tell these people they have a job to do or stay home. They should be offended that another stadium is louder. #$%@#fire this is Notre Dame.

This stadium does need to get louder but when ND has 8,000 students and 72,000 fans cheering compared to Bama where there is 35,000 students and 55,000 fans which one do u think is louder

I was at th Notre Dame vs. Penn state game played at Beaver Stadium. It was a white out for Penn State. This stadium is loud. There student section is unlike any other.

I was also at the Illinois vs. Penn State game q couple years ago. It was a night game, and a white out. It was the loudest game I've ever been at. I only wish Notre Dame stadium could be more like this...

How loud is it? Not loud at all. Matter of fact all the old fucks tell you to sit down when you stand up to watch a play. I have been to high school games louder than ND. Really I have. And as far as intimidating???? Well since pretty much whoever comes into ND stadium walks out with a win, I would'nt say its very intimidating at all.

Overall I would rank our stadium (Loudness and intimidating wise) around 45-50th.

ND stadium can get very loud. We need it to get back to THIS:

YouTube - Crowd Noise disrupts 1988 ND-Michigan game

The stadium was so loud that the refs penalized Notre Dame! Our players on defense were actually trying to quiet down the crowd LOL

That also was 22 years ago. And that was when we actually WON football games. I'm pretty sure we as fans grew accustomed to the fact that we have been and average football team and there's really nothing to be loud about.

If we start winning football games again it may get louder. But can you seriously say you have something to scream and cheer about lately? I cant.

I was at the Purdue game and there was no doubt when the croud got loud they elevated their play. It usually took Purdues offence geting past the 40. There is no doubt the noise helped the team's confidence. I think this team is as good as their confidence allows them to be.

Our crowds are very fair weather. The crowd was into it most of the game, but after that safety and Mavre TD, there was an "oh crap, here we go again" silence in the stadium for a few minutes. Our student section does look very small. I've been to Neyland Stadium, and I would agree that we cannot even compete.

I think the band needs to get into the 21st century with the music selection as well. While I respect and appreciate our Irish traditions (Rakes of Mallow, etc.), the band does little to engage the crowd for long stretches. The Purdue band did what most bands do last week, drown our band out and play LOUDLY.
