Well I suppose that once these conferences start locking up their schedules and adding other teams in the future, ND will have atleast one game to schedule!

you would think with all those wives it would be pretty difficult to sit down and watch football on saturday afternoon! lol!

Lol. I had to work out in Salt Lake City for a few months after college. It was essentially a 6-month detox program.

I think it is a great idea.

It is obvious that they are never going to see a conference better than that MWC and who knows how long the MWC will last. The Pac-whatever already made it clear they do not want religious schools.

I would not mind a yearly game with BYU and it would help JS to have good school to schedule every year, late in the year, without conference consideration.

If BYU could land ND, keep Utah (soon to be a Pac? member) and schedule two more schools like Texas (2011) and Oregon State (2011 and 2012) on a yearly basis, that would be a pretty solid schedule for bowl consideration.

Add in that Navy and Army need games and Air Force and TCU are already in the MWC, which I think will look like a lil version of the Big East and you could see a realistic national indy plan.

Damn Mormon women, no matter how much pineapple juice I tell them I drink, they still don't want to go down.

I like the move, but I don't think it would last. They wouldn't get a BCS Spot like we do, and they wouldn't even get close to the ratings we get every Saturday.

It would be a cool rivalry though.

I live in SLC, I'm not mormon, and I love it here. We have beautiful women (Mormon and not mormon). I'm not going to go into depth on how Utah is a great place (We have enough east coast & Cali transplants crowding the mountains as it is)... but, I snowboard in the winter and mtn bike during my summers. I could ask for more perfect place to do all the things I love.

As for the BYU Indy deal...It would great if ND and BYU became a regular thing and I could see them every other year. I typically travel to Cali or Colorado (Air Force) to catch them.

btw. ND is my school through and through. I also cheer for University of Utah and I hate BYU. I was hoping to come out to South Bend in November to catch the ND/Utah game. (Cheering for ND of course). Anyone know of any ticket sources besides the obvious.. stubhubs type sites?

Let's see if BYU gets blasted for being elitists now...

Straight up the wildest girls in my High School (Victor Valley High mid 90s) were mostly Mormon... worse than the old sheltered Catholic School Girls

Not a fan of BYU.

I'll leave it at that.

I love BYU... Christian school (yes boys and girls, they are Christians) they are conservative, they compete, they do it the right way and graduate their players... In many ways I have always seen them as a Mirror of Notre Dame.

This feels like positioning to me.

BYU wants to be the "ND of the west"? Why? We don't rake in the money from NBC that people always seem to think we do. No, its more because of the power we have. When the superconference thing happens (its only a matter of when now, not if) ND is basically calling the shots. The Big East and/or ACC may go under completely based on what ND decides to do. The Big Ten beckons, and no matter what anyone says about Texas, ND is the entity in control of what happens.

BYU wants to be in that position in the west. When the superconference dominoes start falling 6 or 8 years from now, they want to be able to go wherever they please without any other messy affiliations to have to deal with. They are in a unique enough position to be able to pull it off.

Good for them, I say, but this isn't a permanent move, nor is it some kind of statement about the value of independence in college football - its just a move to put themselves in position for the next big shift.

Ugh, I have nightmares about superconferences. It's gonna be a very sad day when that happens.

disagree, if anything, we will see more independents in a few years as teams will get tired of sharing revenue with leach programs.

a equal, revenue sharing *conference* is a backwards, socialist system anyways and america was founded on independence and capitalism. this is not the 1920s anymore, people do not travel on horse and buggy to attend football games. there is no need for regional conferences for some elite programs who have become national *brands*

this is american isnt it? what other social system has separate entities which share revenue at the end of the year? wal-mart doesnt share profit with general dollar or sav-a-lot, mcdonalds doesnt share revenue with white castle or whataburger.

why would texas football want to share its revenue with baylor? or tech? etc?

conference affiliation makes sense in olympic sports where the revenue generated by each program is marginal. however, football has become so big and profitable that is almost foolish for schools like texas to keep its football team in a conference.

I agree with this.

I think you are going to see schools like Texas take the jump as well.

What I could see happening is:

1 - The Cotton Bowl would be added to the BCS to make it 6 games and 12 teams.

2 - A merger of the ND rule in the BCS with the non BCS conference rule. The Pac, SEC and ACC would hold on to the AQ. The Big East and B12 may or may not.

The Pac, SEC and ACC would get 2 AQ teams (6), the BE and B12 would get 1 AQ (8), the non-BCS would get 1 (9) and there would 3 openings and all you have to do is be in the top 12 or top 16 if ahead of a Pac, SEC, ACC - AQ.

I'd like to see this happen and then there may be a following for more schools to do the same, independence is a good thing and many schools may feel like the mega conference may not be the way to go. I could think of 20 schools that may consider this and help them to gain stature. These mega conferences are trying to put a strangle hold on many schools that may want to spread their wings. I lot of name schools that are considered 2nd tier would fit this scheme very nicely.

Would love to see games against them. Still find it strange that Texas didn't go independant but BYU could. Next Hawaii will get an NHL franchise.

While they may be mocked by SEC worshippers, I think the B10 might have a claim to an AQ team or 2 as well - so that would leave only 1 spot open for an independent team.

second the SEC thing...

anyway, I look at CFB so differently than the ESPN types... I woke up and just fliped channels and found myself listening to the Herd for about ten minutes... I usually avoid ESPN but if I flip through and they are talking cfb I'll listen for a few minutes...

emails sounded like this accroding to Colin... "BYU, nobody cares about you, wake up... you're below average at best, shut up and sit down."
Colin... (summing up five or so minutes) Yeah so they are mediocre in conference and somehow they'll be better without any help???... and why are we even talking about this team... like the email says... BYU is cfb'sversion of no one from no where... now let's talk SEC and USC

I just don't get people... it's COLLEGE football, BYU has won a title, they are a top 25 program most years and they do this while never putting football in front of the college... Yet let's honor USC and Alabama and shit on BYU???

just don't get it.

I agree. Having a message board where we just insult [School-in-the-news-that-isn't-our-favorite] is so...blase. The fact is, everything that makes it difficult to win at Notre Dame makes it even *more* difficult to win at BYU, save perhaps a Michigan and USC game. I couldn't care less whether they win or not, but at least they're trying to do it the right way. And it doesn't help them that every time they're mentioned someone just assumes they're backward polygamists.

...they're backward polygamists.

I would have to they're forward thinking. The idea of threesomes, anal sex and porn have become more mainstream in the last few years than ever before (except perhaps during the highpoint of greek philosophy). Why would we think that polygomy would't be on the rise on a more mainstream basis?

Do you not remember Jim McMahon? Certainly one of the finest athletes to spend time at BYU. He was neither a STUDENT athlete nor a shining example of what it means to be a Mormon. That they allowed him to play four years there is telling.

ESPN Classic - McMahon was a rebel without pause

He was, at one time, a Notre Dame recruit. I don't remember the specifics, but I think he , literally, didn't make the grade at ND. From the perspective of an athletic skill set "we" lost out, but from a character and academic perspective "we" were winners.
