2 comments on this subject. 1-my first game at the stadium was 1979 Notre Dame /southern cal and I could not believe how well and honored the southern cal people were treated by the Irish fans. My tickets were right behind the Notre Dame bench 4/5 rows up and in the midst of the robust Irish fanbase but they treated the sc people with respect. It was an eye opener for me because I did not have the same feelings of goodwill. 2-While living in Columbus I actually heard this on the radio prior to the Mich/Osu game. I quote 'if you are a Mich fan it would be advised to park outside the city a drive a rental in with Ohio plates or put a Ohio State decal on your car if it had Mich plates because vandalism will be an issue'-enough said.

GO IRISH!!!

SC fans are, hands down, my #1 most hated opposing fans.

Anaheim Duck fans are close #2. If they happen to be a fan of both teams...LOOK OUT!!!

there are 3 types of fans

1) Fanatical

2) real fans, can be casual or die hard but legitimatly care about team

3) bandwagoners;

1 and 3 are unbearable regardless of school, 2 is usually cool to talk sports to regardless of allegiance

TEXAS A&M fans are the worst... I know countless amounts of them, if you go to a game, the atmosphere is electric at Kyle field, but they are morons. They all do cheers, and pretend they are in the military, ask you to take off your "cover" during silly little chants where they put their hands on their knees and call it Humping it. (no joke). I have respect for the university itself, and the students that attend...but they think they have the greatest football tradition in the world....with 1 national championship Ever. It was like 1959 I think...truly an exercise in false tradition.

Funny, I sat with a Texas A&M family amongst the A&M section at the Sun Bowl one year. I don't remember who they played. The cheers, the yell leaders, the traditions (kissing your girlfriend after a score) etc... made for a super fun time. Their band, while boring was still one hell of a thing to witness. I would rank the A&M experience second to the UTEP experience. Key thing they had in common: both crowds were cheering so hard for their team that there was absolutely no room for negativity toward the opposing team. Just raucous clean frenzied fun.

ACamp, that video I posted earlier with Bob Davie's commentary was from the UTEP-UT Austin game. Funny stuff.

Some of these tales seem just obnoxious but not in the end dangerous. I have three brothers who played major college FB. The one who played strong guard for Virginia Tech [with a diminutive defensive back named Frank Beamer] said that they judged the thuggishness of the fanbase of the opponent by the number of objects hurled at them from the stands. I believe it was at Syracuse that Coach Claiborne ordered everyone to keep their helmets on at all times. And, I hate to admit it, but the fans of my old home state school, West Virginia, have not always made the state proud. --- One really old and different fan story for you guys: In I believe 1935, ND went to Columbus to play OSU in what might have been our last regular season game with them. My Dad was a senior. He walked into a buckeye-loaded bar where some big boy was leading the OSU fight song. Dad, who had an attack of temporary insanity [or who was watching too many Hollywood movies], went over to the big guy, halted the music, and actually stirred the guys drink with his cigar. He then stared the dude down and suggested that he thought that we all should sing the Notre Dame fight song instead. Which then amazingly happened, allowing ultimately me and my six siblings to be born. Whether this would be viewed as obnoxious fandom, or outre-cool, I suppose hangs on ones perspective.

Old Man Mike-

Your father was a legitimate bad ass by Dirty Harry Standards. In all honesty, it sounds like Chuck Norris couldn't hold his jock strap.

But you so have my curiousity... He wowed his future wife that night there too? Damn.

This thread is such an awesome read. Reps to who started it. I have roughly 3 fan bases that I dislike very strongly:

#3: The Ohio State _uckeyes *cough cough* i mean buckeyes. Most radical, extremist, over the top, ignorant, unintelligent fanbase i have every met. I went to Xavier University and had to live in the land of nuts for 4 years and saw the true colors of OSU fans.

#2 U$C.... Not too much to say about them other then I simply have no respect for them. I mean how could anyone support a program that simply refuses to play by the rules. And their fans wish they had half the class ND has.

#1.....I........HATE....... scUM....... more than anything...... My experience with their fans have been both enjoyable and painful. Most experiences have been negative though. But as much as i hate them, I love that they are our rivals. ND football wouldn't be the same to me personally if there wasn't such a strong rivalry between the 2 schools...... I love the atmosphere of gameday when Im home in South Bend or if Im up in Ann Arbor *is a whore*. Its just awesome. As of last year, my hate for the team was mainly because michigan fans think they are ND. They think that they are the most storied team in the country. They never give up reminding me that they have a higher win %. Which btw they have only had since the Willingham era. Before that ND had the highest win % for over 30 years!!!! And they percentage is on like .003 % greater than ours.... Second, people say ND fans are arrogant..... Holy crap those east coast losers up at scUM are unbearable.... Nothin better than having to deal with a bunch of frat guys who are drunk off of boonesfarm and watered down pink panty droppers.... Lastly, I hate them because of the experience i had at the game last year. Getting into a scrap in the bathroom before the game started just because i had my Zibbe jersey on just fuels my hatred for them even more. I didn;t even care that I had shit thrown at me the entire game. (Guess i deserved it cuz i was in the scUM student section) But getting popped in the face b4 the game even started is a bit much.

Go Irish! Beat Wolverines!

Can't wait to go back to Ann Arbor in 2011 and destroy scUM

To Johnnykillz: actually Mom had seen some of this behavior out of him before and refused to go to the OSU game with him for fear of collateral damages. --- but since you guys are being so nice, I'll tell you another couple of anecdotes from my monster brothers. [one of whom is visiting me coincidentally and just walked in the room]. These incidents [from the aforementioned visiting defensive tackle from East Carolina back in the day] were from his visits to North Carolina and Florida State. In the North Carolina thing, ECU was treated to pre-game locker-room accommodations directly below the Tarheel club in the stadium. The idea seemed to be to produce as much noise and pounding around through the floors to maximally disturb the opposing players and staff while they were attempting to get ready to play. When the team left the locker-room, the Tarheels from the club were ready. Being "sophisticated" UNCers, they poured mint julips and other highly cultured drinks on the team's heads as they went towards the field. I do not lie. My 280 pound olympic lifting brother is right here telling me the tale and laughing about it. --- The Florida State deal is a little different. The FSU fans were fairly quiet until just before gametime. Then, in an obviously coordinated effort [voice commands and all], a large group of them began hurling barrages of fully-loaded hot dogs [maximized for sloppy condiment goo] at every ECU player they could bombard. It is possible that the difference between Mint Julips and gooey hot dogs DOES make some statement about UNC vs FSU, but the underlying thuggishness is the same.

Notre Dame fans have been called "arrogant, self righteous, beer guzzling, and my favorite, fat guy worshiping jesus heads" (seriously you cant make this stuff up) As far as other college teams go, who has the nicest, or not so nicest fans? Keep it PG-13 were not out to dish on other CFB fans, just want to know what kind ofexperiences you've had with other fans either at ND stadium, in another stadium or out in the world. As always Have At It Irish Fans!

LOL!

Wow. You boys grew up with expectations. I can't imagine the other kids on the street having a problem with one of you.

You're father seems like an awesome conversation piece come every occasion relevant. I bet a large amount of that still lives on with you.

My Dad was a mighty man, and a bigtime ND-quality brain as well. After his first trial run kid [me] he and Mom produced four other mighty men. The real relevance of this to all us ND guys is this though: he really loved ND. And he was an ND man, not just some thoughtless gifted dude. The most impressive thing about him was seeing him sitting quietly with his rosary or his novena book --- the Old Bear still praying to Our Lady. What ND did for Dad is the same thing that results in most of us NOT throwing the gooey hot dogs on our opponents. It's also what inspired my giant brothers to knock the waddin' out of their opponent but do it within the rules. I'm very proud of him, and them, and Notre Dame.

Sc is the worst

Sc is the worst

It is no contest, I live in SoCal and will never go to the Coliseum again to watch ND and Sc.
The last time I went I took my daughter who was only 8 or 9. Luckily we sat close to some big high school football players from Loyola High School who loved Notre Dame because it got real ugly.
ALot of the SC fans are Raider Fans who have no NFL team to root for locally so they clung on to SC. THey swear at ND fans , they threaten and they taunt. I have been going to game since the 70's and have seen it get progressively worse. Mike Garret said the sanctions were Trojan envy, well as usual Mike you are wrong. This behavior is a sign of they can never be or will ever be in a class with Notre Dame. All SC had was the tarnished victories while ND continued to display class and sportsmanship. It is the other way around Garrett, it is IRish Envy! You freakin moron.

Well, I will say that having lived in SoCal and NorCal, I quickly learned that those "fans" of Raiderdom don't root for the team but wear the colors...

There are probably some decent Raider fans, but 99% of the "fans" who wear the "colors" on the streets are some scary ass punk thugs. I would refrain from posting this if I weren't convinced that 99% of them don't read.

Yup... in all unbiased honesty... this guy and a hand full of students search the records to find ANY season they can add to the title count and add that title from the 30's decades after they lost it... and the students make it clear the effort was to tie Notre Dame...

but everyone just has Trojan envy Mike..... keep livin the dream. (and looking for work)

worst fan base in sports by far imo... it's like if you have a criminal record and or have some giant chip on your shoulder then you seem to be a Raider fan... Red Sox fans get honorable mention in my experience... equally big chip, they just seem to be more functioning within society than Radier fans...

Raider fans loved being called the worst fans. The more you talk about it the more it eggs them on.

Being a Raider fan, I do not go to Raider games anymore because of the crap that goes on. Raider fans among Raider fans do not feel safe going to a game. Only people I don't feel sorry for are Charger fans who knowingly go to Raider home games.

But I will never stop loving the Raiders and ND even though we suck now.

So I can't be overly critical about our team. We went 6-6 last year which in my eyes sucked. To sum up our season last year in one word, what would it be?

Usually to the tone of "YOU LOST TO NAVY! NAVY!!!!! NAAAAAAAAVYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!! YOU'RE LIVING IN THE '30'S!!!!!!!!"

I still encounter Michigan fans that believe losing to Toledo and Appalaichan State is better than losing to 8-5 Navy.

My friends a michigan fan I bought a Appalachian State hat for when comes over. Ya I heard that stuff too but division two that not even close . Michigan should be never ever compare that plus Navy has some players for sure.
Q. Why did they change the playing field at "The Big House" to cardboard?
A. Because Michigan has always looked better on paper.
