Although Irish Envy tends to be overwhelmingly a football forum, I believe that the "other" sports are all important to increasing NDs public persona as an elite institution in all ways. So...I am delighted that we are in the Big East, and am not so delighted that we can never seem to manufacture [in basketball] enough bench strength to survive four quarters against the Big Boys. This has to be due either to: a) inadequate recruiting; or b) errors of player evaluation and game plan. Both of these sorts of deficiencies must be laid at the feet of whomever the head coach is. I like some of what Mike Brey does, and I'm sure that he is a capital fellow, but I don't like strategies that depend upon "iron fives" for entire games and, worse, seasons. Whatever is going on here [and I suspect some of both, as when Harangody got hurt all of a sudden it was revealed that bench-warmers actually could compete at high levels], we have to get deeper and play deeper if we are going to rely on more than the great ND heart and a few lucky charms from the leprechaun to go to a Big East championship. I'm not saying that any of this is easy. I am saying that it is necessary.
