Game day rituals

Get online and start chatting with my IE brethren (NDinL.A. - can't wait for Friday September 3rd!) and watch Irish highlights and pump up videos on Youtube.

I remember those days my man! That's when we (or at least I) first joined the site, and we couldn't wait for the next day to come. Both of us with a wee bit of alcohol to get us primed for the next day. Only 39 more days!!!

I got Friday, September 3rd circled on my calendar. We need to come up with some sort of drinking game for that night. Might have to put some thought in on that one! Can't wait!!!

ND Saturday starts officially at 12:01 am (late friday night). I will notify everyone in the house that is it 'Notre Dame Saturday'. This used to get me weird looks, but now everyone knows the routine. My big thing is having BBQ carne asada at game time, or at the half. I begin marinating the meat on friday, so its ready on saturday just before game time (11am on west coast)

Tradition: Dropping the first F-Bomb which historically has always been lobbed at Tom Hammonds, and usually just because I didnt like the way he said something in pregame. My over/Under on fbombs to hammond is about 3mins after the start of the pregame.

Saturday:
House is clear - everyone mysteriously has something to do that day (shopping, hair appt, etc)
BBQ (Carne Asada, flour tortillas, homemade salsa, drink - the menu is set in stone)
Then comes the cursing,
Then the exhiliration,
Throw in some more cursing,
Then it ends with either exhiliration, or extreme disgust.

About an hour after the game is over, ppl start to return to the house. Upon their arrival, I will be asked if ND won or lost, I know the question is to gauge what type of mood I am going to be in for the rest of the day.

put up the flag early in the morning. Watch College Gameday alll morning long. Parade around in my #3 signed Darius Walker jersey, ND shorts, and ND hat. Start screemin at the TV when the game starts (I have had more than one complaint). Take the dog for a 15 minute walk when we start giving up the lead in the forth quarter. Go to the bar if we win. Isolate myself if we lose.

Generally I will wake up and grab my South Bend Tribune, read all the articles and go through the starters while on the crapper....now that I live in florida I will do the same but with my laptop, haha..... Then I will go to the store before College football live starts and get some fresh wings and other food that tickles my fancy normally something greasy to go along with the 12 budweisers im gonna drink....then channelflip between about 4 games until the irish start. I try never to move from the couch unless its a commercial and am probably gonna end up drunk...especially if the irish lose....the Jack comes out....

Wake up, workout, shower, Dunkin Donuts, buy food, Gameday/prep food, then channel flip between games for the next 7-10 hours.

Get up and put on the ND shirt of the day. Make sure my boys have their ND jerseys ready when they get up. Make green scrambled eggs (kids love it). Read everything I can find on the web about the Irish, and watch College Game Day. Heat the wings, and make sure the beer is iced down. Watch the game and yell at the TV. After the game, I apologize to the kids for scaring the bejeezus outta them with all the yelling! Rinse and repeat next Saturday!

my season rituals consist of watching Rudy, prior to the 1st game of the year. i have to wear the shirt and same cap all season long on gamedays. like everyone, i wear it win or lose. i still wear my hannah and friends bracelet on fridays and saturdays. the past 4 seasons, i've had to watch the game alone, no distractions. i even send the mrs. to the room, lol. light a candle before our tough/rivalry games (usc and um) and say a little prayer prior to kick off.

C. Pace frantically for half an hour from 3-3:30
D. Jump up and down when the broadcast starts
E. See Tom Hammond's face, get transfixed by those soulless eyes
F. Throw up
G. Watch game

Friday: I go to High School games with my Pops to see our Alma mater play (Archbishop Hoban -- Holy Cross school).

Saturday: I wake up like a kid on Christmas, giddy about the upcoming game and throw in a ND Marching Band CD and crank it to 11. Then watch some early games while pacing around like a ferret on caffeine. During the game, I have a death grip on my football while cursing the family trees of poorly skilled officials who blow obvious calls (at least in my mind). With any luck, nothing gets damaged (TV, chair, lamp, torn shirt, etc)

Afterward, much consumption of alcohol (win or lose); type depends on if the outcome is the former or latter.

A little change up this season: I bought my Pops one of the leather ND office chairs from the bookstore to watch the game from. Also, to celebrate the changing of the coaching guard and start things off fresh.

 

[Legacy]

Mass, Rudy, Irish whiskey with friends and ritual sacrifices of virgins. Confession and mass the next day.

I wake up at 9. go to my shelf and look at the brick i have from the old ND stadium when they renovated it, which is spray painted gold and signed by Anthony Denman, Brock Williams, Jabori Halloway, and Joey Getherall. Then i take my ND snow globe which plays the fight song, and play it all mourning.
