Yeah for sure, I'm thinking 6'0", maybe 5'10"... Basically, if he's on his knees he should be eye level with me.

6-9!? He should be playing basketball. If O lineman are tall like that, how does the quarterback see over the line? No seriously, I'm curious because most of our lineman are 6-7, 6-6 etc, and Dayne is only 6-3 or so. Same with Jimmy.

its different with tackles tackles can be tall, besides crist is the 6-4, 6-5

yeah they might crouch, but they don't crouch THAT much. Hasn't anyone ever seen those camera shots from behind the line, kinda like an over the shoulder view of the qb, and it looks nearly impossible to see the whole field cuz the line is so tall. I guess that's why Dayne had a few passes batted in the spring game?

Even if a tackle at 6'9" happens to be standing straight up for a second right in front of the qb, the receivers are moving so fast that he would only block the view for a fraction of a second. Besides, tackles are on the outside, and are only a small fraction of what the qb notices as he looks downfield to pass. Try this: Stand flat footed and stare at a point in the distance. Keep your eyes on that point and now stand on your toes. You just gained about 2 - 3 inches in height, but you don't notice much difference do you? Doug Flutie's 5'9" - 5'10" height didn't seem to bother him.

And yes, the Oline does crouch "that much" if they are in a proper blocking stance. The following is not a very good video, but it shows some good technique. Just forward to 1:10 in the video until 2:00. The lineman at 1:50 has a nice stance.

Sound explanation, Coach.

I believe IrishMoore1's ideal OL appears about the 3:40 mark of that video. He's lined up at LG.

Seriously, 6-8, 6-9 OLs aren't a dime a dozen but they're not unheard of either.

In the mid 90's ND had a OL that was 6-8, 6-6, 6-4, 6-7, and 6-8 from left to right, Clevenger, Akers, Kaczenski, Rosenthal, and Doughty. Powlus was 6-2 and couldn't see over the center if he was standing up straight.

Jarious Jackson was 6-0 and played behind 6-6 Petitgout, 6-7 Wisne, 6-3 Merandi, 6-7 Ridder, and 6-7 Rosenthal.

Powlus and Jackson were ranked in the Top 4 ND Passers of All Time before Charlie Weis brought in a real passing offense.

IF Sterup can protect Starling's back and keep him from getting blindsided, Starling won't say word one about his height.

As for batting passes, DEFENDERS are the problem not OLs. Pat Kuntz was only 6-3 but he had an uncanny ability to read the QBs eyes, fill a passing lane, and time his jump perfectly with an outstretched mitt.

oic thanks for the vid. I really hope the o-line doesn't take a huge step back this year. If o-line doesn't come together, this season will not be pretty.

Chose NU over Iowa. Not as dramatic as Watts Danzler but like Danzler there wasn't much doubt.

Only surprise, I believe, is the timing. Sterup had indicated he would make a decision before his season started.

On to the next one.
