They were closed, and the baker probably has never seen Golden. The baker probably works an "overnight" shift, so that the donuts are available at the ungodly hour that they probably open. The baker is reported to have possibly left a door unlocked, while in a bathroom or something, and Golden and his pal(s) came in and helped themselves to some of the donuts.
