Question about ND's O-line Recruits

I was just curious about how many scholarships could be used on O-Linemen.

I know we already have 3 studs in Prestwood, Hanratty, and Hegarty.. Plus Springmann could play O-line, but he's basically a lock for DE.

So how many more scholarships could ND use on O-linemen... I'll admit I new to the recruiting process so I wasn't sure how the scholarships are usually split up between the different positions.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Technically they could use every scholarship available for O-line man. There is no rule that says you have to use a certain number of scholarships on a certain position.

I understand that. By not following the recruiting process, I meant I didn't know the strategic plans that coaches use to balance their scholarship positions, because obviously you don't want all O-linemen lol...

But I didn't know if there is like usually a certain number where they quit granting scholarships for linemen..

Thanks anyway though.

i dont think there is a formula or anything like that... i think in this case it just based on need.

Ok, let me totally rephrase this...

HOW many more O-linemen do anticipate ND will end up with in the 2011 recruiting class?

From what I read today on ISD, we are looking at 4 total, 3 OT and 1 interior guy. But that may change depending on the quality of the guy that wants to join the ranks.

Thanks, that actually gives me some insight into the what coaching staff might actually do. Although, I'm sure it could change.

I made this thread, because I was just kind of concerned about getting other vital roles for positions that are also in great need... Ala any defensive line position / safties / corner-backs.

Thanks again though guys.

I will admit, even though I am very confident in Kelly's abilities, the OL recruiting concerns me a little. We have 4-5 guys depending on who ends up at OL or DL. I do not want us to overload on OL and short ourselves at WR, DB or true DL. We MUST add some defensive playmakers in this class and atleast one freak WR.

I would guess probably one more OL this class. As much as it hurts to think about, we lost Matt James also, so last class wasn't as deep as it should have been. It seems kind of early to close recruiting that position, but we have all 4 star guys, so nothing to complain about!

i would say maybe 1 more but we are at 9 verbals so far (1 soft), we reallistically have room for maybe 8 more guys.

we have room for 1 more DE
1 QB
2 WR
id guess 3 db's
1 more LB

thats a full class this year

I feel like BK is solidifying the O-Line for the next few years knowing he is going to grab one or two over the next few years. That way next year he can concentrate on the other roles of the other positions such as LB, WR, DB, ETC...

Considering he is thinking MASSA and HENDRIX will be solid QB'S over the next 5 years and he has a solid O-Line this year as far as recruiting.... LB with some young fresh talent outside this recruiting season and who is on file as well as the WR position being ok?!... He is sure to , IMO, pick up a couple solid DB's next year on top of what he finishes with this year. I personally like the approach.

Depending upon how you look at the current members of the Irish Class of 2011, you could argue Brian Kelly is hitting on all cylinders when it comes to offensive linemen.
In 2006 the Irish signed six guys with four or more stars along the offensive line. Right now Notre Dame has four guys committed that are classified by Scout.com as offensive linemen with rankings of four stars.
While it would be great to praise the efforts of Kelly and his staff, it looks as if only three of the current commits will start off on the offensive side of the ball when they report to South Bend. Still, to get three members of Scout.com Top 15 offensive tackles to commit at such an early stage of the process shows Kelly is not fooling around. Scout.com currently has Conor Hanratty as the country's 9th best offensive tackle in the country. The newest member of the Irish class Matt Hegarty is ranked right behind Hanratty at number ten with Jordan Prestwood sitting in the 12th spot. Tony Springmann sits at 17th in the most recent rankings but has been told by Notre Dame coaches he’ll start his Irish career as a defensive end. Are the Irish done? There is still room for another if the right one is willing to join this already outstanding group.

I know we kind of want a QB a year, but after Rees, Massa, and Hendrix, should we maybe think about a RB...

That said, we should always leave the door open for an elite guy...maybe that's Bubba.
