Spencer Blows Up
Following his freshman football season, Spencer was hungry.
With big-time college football on his mind, he attacked every weight-lifting session and training session with vigor, and showed up as a sophomore, 40 pounds bigger.
Weighing in at 175 pounds, Spencer made the varsity and quickly caught the eye of college football recruiters.
“I always felt I had the potential to be good, I just had to work and get bigger and stronger,” Spencer said. I worked out insane over that off-season, and then I got the opportunity to get the ball more and show everyone what I can do.
“Junior year I had to get out and try and prove something. I still haven’t proven everything I can do. Still more tricks in the bag for senior year.”
So Spencer keeps working. His workout gear of choice, Vernon Hills sweats, Chicago Bears sweats, or Ohio State sweats.
Ask Spencer where he was going to college up until recently, and he’d of told you Ohio State. That was always the dream. His parents went there, and his father played and coached there.
“When my dad coached there and we won the National Championship, there was nowhere else I’d rather go,” Spencer said. He’ll return to The Horseshoe this weekend for Buckeyes spring game. “Then, as I started to get around and see that I do need to look at other schools, I started to look around and saw some of these other schools are pretty awesome too. I just have to look around and see where I can impact the program best and have the best time.
“Coaches say we’re scared to recruit him because he’s an Ohio State lock, and I say that’s crazy and that’s stupid for them to say that because I’m willing to go anywhere. I need to not to look at it from a biased perspective, and look everywhere and see where I can fit best in a program.”
Spencer says he doesn’t have any recruiting favorites, and added that he’s had a great time on visits to Wisconsin, Notre Dame and Iowa.
“We went up to Wisconsin for the Fresno State game and the Michigan game. It’s always fun watching Michigan get beat up on. It was cool there and the fans there are crazy.
“We went to the junior day at Notre Dame and the USC game. The USC game was awesome, but DaVaris and I were sick like a dog. We had swine serious flu, whatever you want to call it, we had something bad. It’s kind of like we didn’t get to really experience it as much as we could have because we were sick. Then once the new coaching staff came in, we went to the junior day and had a great time there and we got see everything a little bit more. We got a feel for that program.
“I went to Iowa over the weekend and I went to the spring game and got a little bit of what it would be like at night there, because I have a whole bunch of friends that go there.”
Notre Dame assistant coach Chuck Martin continues to recruit Spencer hard.
“Coach Martin is from here and he likes to get his guys,” Spencer said. “We met with the coaches at the junior day and kind of felt the atmosphere and what Notre Dame football is about. The tradition and history they have is tremendous. They’re coming after us and they’re not holding back anything.
“I’m just trying to visit places and see where I can get the job done.”
Spencer would like to know that answer before the start of his senior season.
