USA vs. Canada on the Ice part Deux

USA vs. Canada on the Ice part Deux

The stage has been set and the final appearance between the two hockey teams for the gold medal will be Sunday at 12:15 pm.

Canada opened up with a three-goal lead to hold off a Slovakian comeback to win 3-2 in the Olympic semifinals to earn a second chance against the United States in the gold-medal game.

The unbeaten Americans routed Finland 6-1 earlier today, Friday, and now must beat the tough and experienced Canadians for a second time to win their first Olympic gold since the Miracle on Ice in 1980.

Johnny, I moved my post from the Finland thread to this one and it ended up being the first post. I don't think I can bump it down. Hope you don't mind. The speech isn't a bad way to start things off anyway.

I think it is going to be a great game. It is definitely going to live up to the hype. If the Americans can weather the first 5 or 6 minutes of the initial flurry, I think they will have a great shot. They need to stay out of the penalty box and get lots of traffic in front of Luongo.

GO USA!!!

My best man's wedding is at noon tomorrow so I'll miss the whole game... but I'll tivo

Obviously it's hard enough to beat Canada once, beating them twice is REALLY gonna be a challenge, not saying we can't do it or that we'll def. lose b/c we have proven we can indeed beat them... but anyone who EXPECTS us to win here is lacking some hockey knowledge.

We got seriously outplayed for the majority of the FIRST game...Miller and our D held strong and we pulled it out... my guess is either Ryan Miller is a world class hockey legend and is recognized as THE goaltender in the world right now by tomorrow night... OR...... we lose.

This is all coming from a guy who ssaid at the beginning of the tourney we had a great TEAM, and all this talk of Miller having to carry us b/c we lack to world class talent is garbage... I still feel that way... but against Team Canada it's a whole different beast. Your goalie plays off his rocker or you lose.

I hope Dustin Brown and co. bring the lumber tomorrow too... really sending a statement early like they did in the first game can help big but unlike the first game they need to KEEP hitting... they really let up once they got the second goal and it almost cost them.

Either way I really felt this was one of the most talented teams in the tourney AND one of the most talented teams we as a country have ever put together and that the experts were way wrong about Team USA coming in... I think they proved that... the young talnet of this team is so good and so deep they can carry us for two more Olympics... reminds me of the "Golden Generation" for Portugal in soccer. Give it two/three more years and the stars of this team will overshadow the Modano/Roenick/Hull generation... maybe not with front line names like that but certainly in depth... hell Parise/Brown/Patrick K. may even end up as a hell of a front line name section...

I played against a bunch of the guys on the US team at one point or another (Quick when he was at Avon Old Farms and Parise when he was at North Dakota/first got drafted over the summers to name a couple). Going D-3 put an end to my pro ambitions, but its sick to see these guys doing so well. With the start of the USHL (non-professional Junior A), the spread of hockey to places like California (hello Bobby Ryan), and the vastly increased level of play in College hockey the US is going to be consistently competitive in international competition for some time to come.

Plus, Quebec is no longer the only place to learn how to play goal. The US sports three very good-great goalies on their roster and young kids (Corey Schneider and Quick) will keep the US well stocked at that position for years to come.

Williams. Who just lost an OT heart-breaker in the NESCAC tourney, they had a great year this year (only team to beat #1 Norwich) but will likely be on the outside looking in for the NCAAs.

Can't believe there was no live discussion during the game on here. U.S. sent it overtime, scoring with 24 seconds left in regulation to tie.

Agreed. I expected page upon page of ongoing commentary. WTF?!?? Hell, I'm not a hockey fan yet find the game exciting and "must see TV!"

I watched it with my roommates and none of us know that much about hockey, but we couldn't turn the channel. WOW! That was amazing to watch.

It's a bittersweet victory.

We could have won it all. We had the opportunities. The Canadians also could have made the margin larger.

The point is this: Miller is a stud, Parise is a hero, and Kane always seemed to be in the right place to aid his team.

I salute these hard working, blue-collared gentlemen. For them (among others), I am proud to be living in the USA.

Also don't forget the Canadians were very VERY close to being knocked out by Slovakia. If Pavel Demitra puts the puck into a gaping net without Luongo getting a glove on it, we are talking about a completely different game. Miller is a stud. Parise was awesome. Dustin Brown was the best player who didn't tally a point in the tourney - he made huge plays that didn't make the stat sheet.

It is funny because so many people here in LA don't really know squat about hockey. When Brown's scoring dipped this season, they were talking about how he should be traded and he shouldn't be our captain and things like that. Then he gets named to the Olympic team and they thought enough of him to put the "A" on his sweater and that made a lot of LA fans rethink their feelings. He got a ton of great national pub on those Olympic broadcasts which was great to see despite him not tallying a point.

I am really pumped about the last 20 or so games of this season in the NHL. Should be a lot of fun.

By the way, KPENN, totally agree with your assessment of Avery. His antics are bad for hockey. I didn't even really like him when he was with the Kings. You are very lucky to have a guy like Pronger who dominates but doesn't resort to such BS tactics as a guy like Avery. The Ducks are not the same team without Pronger this year.

Since we don't have a team in the NHL I have never really followed Hockey....After watching that game the other day, I really hope the NHL gets a team in K.C. It was awesome, the guys played their hearts out, congrats to Canada...(assholes...j/k ;))
