Another well regarded prospect that turned in a slow time, 5.9, at the U.S. Army National Combine. 2010 U.S. Army National Combine - Yahoo! Sports

Scout lists him with a 5.12 40.

Scout also notes he was All-Colorado in 2009.

Bill Hodge ESPN's On The Trail notes Austin received an offer from ND

The times are not necessarily faster later, they may actually be truer, but when these kids test at their high school they get more favorable numbers They know the track and the timers
I had to be time for my forty during senior year and it was never that fast

Great catch with that BGIF. What makes a combine so slow as a whole when these kids will test faster later?

The U.S. Army Combine may have been a slow track. It may also have had accurate timing. No doubt most HS coaches have "fat thumbs" when timing their own. Services may report "fast" watch times as many of the reports we see now are either their coaches timing or just self reporting. I think the combine times are more relevant but their not all done electronically.

Brendon Austin not only came to ND's Jr Day he stayed overnight to get full value out of his trip from Colorado. Like most of those attending he was impressed. ND is among his leaders.

He's also picked up offers from MIN, UCLA, and WIS.

To piggyback on that BGIF, he is on spring break so he'll be going home tomorrow where I'm sure we'll be hearing from the recruiting sites about his trip. Wiltfong says ND is in his top 2, along with Stanford...

If he is looking at a top two of stanford and notre dame, it looks like academics and legitimate classy programs are a high priority of his. Heres to hoping the kid sees the needs we have and sees himself filling them in south bend.

Notre Dame Football - Austin Takes In ND Over The Weekend
Written by Lorenzo Reyes 25 March 2010

Brendon Austin took advantage of his Spring Break and made an extended visit to ND from Friday to Tuesday. He spend time with players, coaches, and other recruits.

I spent a lot of time with the players (Saturday) night. I was hanging out with Zach Martin; he's a redshirt freshman this year. I also hung out a little bit with Chris Stewart; he's the starting left guard. I hung out with all of those guys (Saturday) night and they were all great. They just showed me a good time here at Notre Dame.”

...

I spoke mostly with [Ed] Warinner. He was just saying how he's recruiting me as a tackle. He said he's going to put the best guys on the line so there's going to be some competition. I thought that was pretty cool, that way I can be familiar with the tackle position.”

Mom and Dad made the trip with him and were equally impressed.

He also got to spend time with fellow ND OT Recruit Matt Hegarty. Those two would make a nice nucleus to build an OLine around.

Top 3 remain ND, Stanford and homestate CU (in no particular order). He hopes to make a decision before the season starts.

ND visited him today. He still plans to make a trip to Stanford this summer before he makes a decision. So, he is unlikely going to commit soon. It might be too late for him by then. We shall see.

Yup, especially since ND seem to have made a really good pitch on guys like hobbi and cook today. There's really only one spot available. Maybe two...

May 4

Tony Alford stopped by Austin's HS on a May Evaluation visit this week.

...
“He walked in this morning and he visited for a little bit because I had to get to class,” remembered Austin. “He just let me know that there is one spot left with Hegarty committing yesterday, so he was just letting me know how everything was going on and how everything was working out.”
Despite Notre Dame’s limited space, Austin remains committed to taking his time with his recruitment. While acknowledging that the Hegarty commitment added a bit of pressure to his timetable, Austin still intends to take at least one more visit.
“Yeah, there is a little bit of pressure on me now,” said Austin. “Just kind of have to get lucky that when you’re ready to make your decision that the spot is still available. There is a little bit of pressure but I’m not too concerned.”
Of course, with his top three of Notre Dame, Colorado and Stanford, Austin clearly has options and that undoubtedly gives him more confidence to take his time. He still plans on making a summer decision but intends to take one more visit to Stanford before choosing. Notre Dame has made it clear that they really want Austin in the program and he understands that. He has developed a particularly close relationship with his recruiting coach Alford.
“Oh that’s great,” he enthused. “I have that much respect for coach Alford. He’s a great guy and just to have talked to him for the past couple of months—he’s just really, truly a great guy. I appreciate everything he’s done.”

I kind of like the approach the staff is taking (and all teams may do this, I don't know) by telling the kid. "Hey, we have one scholarship left at your position, if you want to play for us, time is of the essence". If a kid truly wants to play for ND they will be more apt to commit right away instead of dragging the process on for the media attention. Now they know, if I don't commit now, someone else is going to take my spot.

That is possible, but I think the recent players backing out of commitmens was due to the poor seasons and uncertainty in the coaching situation. I have confidence that with Coach Kelly on board this will no longer be a concern.

Hell no! If some posters remember, I had my own idea of how to do the recruiting process, even though I would obviously commit to Notre Dame. Be a silent commit from when I first get the scholarship offer, then pretend I have no interest in ND. Do all the visits and crap, then on NSD, chooses between Michigan and USC. I would throw both hats in the garbage on live tv, then whip out a ND hat.
