Official Website of the Senior Bowl

The Senior Bowl is the top scouting game for seniors entering the NFL Draft. This year, Notre Dame has three players in it. Safety Kyle McCarthy, center Eric Olsen, and tackle Sam Young are all in the game. This can be huge for the draft stock. These 3 have nothing to lose since they are not highly regarded, but a good week in practice and in the game and they can be second day picks. Good luck gentlemen!

"The Notre Dame offensive linemen -- Irish G Eric Olsen looked stiff and showed slow feet. He did not play with leverage and was driven back into the quarterback several times. Purdue DT Mike Neal owned Olsen all morning long. As for Notre Dame OT Sam Young, he is tall and has a big frame but is also somewhat stiff and struggled to play low and anchor against bull-rushers. Young also failed to get good push in the running game. Because of his frame Young could be drafted in the fourth or fifth round, and Olsen could come off the board late, but neither has much in the way of developmental qualities."

I think Olsen could be a solid center in the pros if he gets some good coaching. I think Young is a lost cause because of his size and just lack of skill. Olsen should be taken in the 5th or 6th round and I still don't think Young should be drafted at all.

–Kyle McCarthy (Notre Dame) did not stand out ear*lier this week but he showed a lot of range today. While his speed isn’t there, he antic*i*pates throws well and he can burst out of his backpedal. Made some nice plays on the ball in deep coverage.

Sam Young (Notre Dame) looked great in drills. He kept his knees bent and his rear low while mov*ing very quickly. How*ever once he was put in to live action, he strug*gled to mir*ror the defen*sive ends.

Sam Young might be the biggest underachiever in Notre Dame history. With his frame, he should easily be blocking semi trucks.

The guys over at the National Football Post are killing all three of the ND kids at the Senior Bowl. All three are welcome to come play up here in the CFL, my Argonauts could find a jersey for them.

Jason Ching would like a word.

Jason Ching was a USA Today Prep All-American. I believe as a freshman he had back surgery for a herniated disc. A month later he was was diagnosed with a stomach illness. He was gravely ill and almost died. He was put back in the hospital and lost major weight (70 pounds). He dropped from 280 to 210. He probably lost the equivalent of about two years of development time. He was only with the team 3 years.

I feel bad for Sam. I really think he was the victim of poor coaching from Latina and a terrible SC coach. No reason Sam couldn't have been an All American, except that he was under coached. I really don't believe he underachieved because he gave his heart and soul to the program and started every game of his career. I think an NFL team should take a chance on him because I firmly believe his best days are ahead of him once he gets some good coaching and a superior SC program.

"Notre Dame safety Kyle McCarthy......he really struggles to eliminate space and lacks some serious speed."

I objectively said basically the same thing about McCarthy on this board a few months ago and ppl jumped all over me for it. I wasnt coming down on him, I was giving an objective opinion(albeit unpopular). He was definitely one of the best players we had on defense this last season. But being a good player, or the best player on a particiluar defense doesnt necessarily make you a talented player nationally.

I think Sam Young will find his way...being 6'8" and 300+ he will get drafted and he will get a chance to compete at the NFL level. I wish him the best.

and the way things are now, just because you are a standout on a Notre Dame team, that no longer automatically gets you drafted. its a sign of the times

Notre Dame OT Sam Young -- There is nothing wrong with Young's effort. He fights to stay in position and finishes every drill in practice. However, his 6-foot-7¾ frame makes it hard for Young to redirect in pass protection, and he has difficulty getting under defenders' pads as a run-blocker. He also has very long arms (34½ inches) that seem to make it hard for him to be quick with his hands. We saw that show up on Day 4 when Young was working against California DE Tyson Alualu, who used his explosive hands and strong upper body to slap Young's arms down. Young did not have the hand quickness to recover and it was over at that point. His size also seems to make Young sluggish and he has a hard time staying balanced.

Being 6-foot-7.75 and 300+ means he'll get a chance to show what he's got. Also not being able to redirect in pass protection, not getting under defenders pads, slow hands, and balanced can all be addressed by learning proper technique. As alot of players coming out of college are, he can no longer get by on his physical attributes alone (see JaMarcus Russell). Sam Young now has to learn his craft, or end up like JRuss(sans the $30mill guaranteed contract).

I can remember earlier in Jon Runyan's(6'7" 330lbs) career when Michael Strahan used to embarass him twice a year. I think he used to outweigh Strahan by 75-80lbs. Then Runyan hit his stride and became a beast lineman, and not another defender embarassed him again. Sam needs to hit his stride, but it will take time.
