Offered per Rivals. Official to at FSU, then next weekend to Mississippi. We are a long shot.

IrishinFl, see what you can find out.

Apparently he's a soft verbal to FSU. I think he just made an OV to USF, which was supposedly kind of surprising. Good that we offered him. According to ESPN, he has great natural ability. Supposed to be a little quicker than he is fast, however.

Helps us a little bit that Kelly had offered him at Cincy as well. I think this depends a lot on how Kelly did the first time around, when he was at UC. If he made a good impression, but Brooks just wasn't interested in the school, then we may have a chance.

Is there an article that reports a recent offer by ND?

He's got a full schedule of visits through NSD. No space for ND. Without a visit I don't see him coming/admitted.

Sorry guys, he wasn't at the bar tonight. We're having a meeting for a NSD party at the bar on Monday, so that's when I'll get the "inside info"

According to Jake Brown at IrishIllustrated Brooks is considering visiting ND. As of now he's scheduled to visit Mississippi this weekend, the last recruiting weekend for this class. He'll have to cancel MISS and make the trip to South Bend otherwise it's over.

Utupo committed to ND without seeing the campus first.

Apples and Oranges.

Utupo committed to ND in July and visited ND in September. Official Visits to Notre Dame include meeting with ND Admissions personnel and faculty. Keep in mind at ND the Admissions Department makes the decision as to who qualifies academically for a scholarship, not a football coach nor the NCAA Clearinghouse.

Brooks would have the opportunity to meet with ND Admissions IF he comes to campus this weekend, the last weekend before National Signing Day.

So would that mean Kelly is not allowed to offer unless he checks with admissions about the student first? If not, how did Utupo commit before he stepped on campus to check if he could even attend ND?

No, he can offer scholarships based upon guidelines/understanding with the ND Admissions Department BUT all ND offers are conditional upon Admission's O.K.

ND's Admission requirements have been tougher than the NCAA's long as I can remember. Most fans including a lot of ND fans assume if a recruit meets NCAA Clearinghouse requirements for the core course GPA and Test Score on a sliding basis they approved for any school. Not so. ND, Stanford, Vanderbilt, and a couple of others require more.

The NCAA used to require 12 cores courses while ND, Standford and Vanderbilt required 16. That goes back to the Holtz days. Cerrato and Holtz use to play the time/pressure game supposedly holding transcripts on questionable prospects until close to National Signing Day. The purpose was to force acceptance. Admissions cried foul and finally put their foot down in '95 when two recruits in sent in Letters of Intent were rejected outright by ND Admissions as they had never been approved to receive scholarships. Both were HS All American difference makers.

Davie tried to work with Admissions to get in questionable recruits. He got some but by and large didn't. Davie moaned and groaned over it but didn't fight very hard. Willingham caved almost completely. He also got some academically marginal recruits in but if Admissions said no he generally rolled over. One of Weis's smartest moves was meeting with Admssions staff (Saracino) and establishing where the grey area was and where the hard lines were. He didn't waste Admissions time with a kid clearly not qualified to compete in ND's classroom environment. Weis passed this information unto this staff. When they looked at underclassmen that expressed interest in ND they were capable of looking at a kid's transcript and telling him you a sophomore with a weak math background IF you want to go to ND you'll need to take 3 math courses in your next 3 semesters to show ND Admissions you can handle the math workload at ND. As a result Weis was more effective in getting academically marginal recruits like Paddy Mullen approved.

When a prospect makes an Offical Visit to ND the recruit tours the campus, meets the coaches, and meets with Admissions and faculty members in their field of interest. It's a two way eyeball. Admissions/faculty get to see the recruit in person rather than just perusing a transcript. The recruit (and parents) get to ask questions about qualifications, coursework, expectations, ND's Tutorial Program, etc. It's a win/win situation.

Brooks has had his transcript at least screened, possibly throughly reviewed by Admissions at this point but they haven't had the opportunity to meet with him to evaluate him. That's the key point. A large part of life is showing up. With ND Admissions it's crucial. If you look back historically, ND had few recruits on campus late in the reruiting cycle. South Bend weather is part of the reason but the biggest reason is that Admission's needs time to do their thing.

What's this based on?

Early in the season some recruits or their coaches claim offers that never materialize. In some cases it's due to misunderstanding. In some cases it's puffing up the Offer List shilling for more offers.

So who is Brooks trying to impress? The HS All-American teams were longed ago picked and now played. With a week to go, who is this kid trying to induce an offer out of based upon a late offer by ND? Nobody.

FSU is the odds on favorite. ND came in the game extremely late. This is a crap shoot by Kelly.

So how is the kid using ND?

Every year this happens, there is some 'late interest' by some players that were not associated much with ND. There was the running back from Cali a couple years ago, Milton Knox, at the end he says he is interested in ND and then he has a nice little telelvised Press Conference to pick UCLA. Last year there were even more, Jawanza Starling and Byron Moore kept stringing ND along at the end and then once again, they had their cute little Press Conference on ESPNU to pick USC.......once again, say ND is in contention, you get some TV's at your High School and ESPNU will pick it up and put you on TV.

Manti was more the exception than the norm, how many kids really pick ND on NSD these days? The vast majority of ND Recruits Commit to ND early in the process, they understand the total package of academics and athletics and embrace it. Sure there are probably a few kids still actively considering ND, Matt James seems sincere as does Spond and some other kids but many of these kids keep ND around for the publicity and for their parents. Go talk to some of those kids on the Facebook and see what they are saying about the schools they are considering, very few of them are talking about the academics, they usually talk up the Football Programs, location, opportunities to play early and get to the NFL.....not many are talking about academics......

If you trust the rankings at all. He is nearly a wash with Toney Hurd. I would like to see him at least visit.

Although Hurd's offer list is much better IMO

Yeah, but Kelly offered him. He didn't beg for the offer. How can he be using ND when ND was the one who offered. If he's shaky to FSU, he'd be a fool to not at least explore the option of ND. And in the end if he chooses another school, he's not using ND.

Now, some guys, I definitely agree with you. They throw that ND hat in there to make themselves look good. Gaston having ND in his top 5 is a joke. ND isn't even recruiting him anymore. Starling wasn't like that however. He was genuinely torn. He chose SC, then didn't turn in his LOI till much later because he was having 2nd thoughts. It's a tough decision.

If I remember correctly, Milton Knox wanted to go to ND but his father said he is going to UCLA.

NDinLA - you are correct and I did seem to miss that part of the story, I assumed he was a lock to FSU and this was ND's first contact with him, I missed the UC connection.

As for Milton, maybe that was said in public but his friends were claiming otherwise.....he was UCLA all the way and was just making trips to get a little attention late in the recruting season.....but maybe they were making stuff up too, who knows.

You do not know how much it hurt when Starling went to SC. He said his parents wanted him to go to either ND or Stanford because of academics. I'm guessing he went to SC because of T.J. Bryant.
