But this is kind of off on a tangent, there can be NO argument, against Ohio State being a decent defense. And they struggled to stop Navy. THAT was the original debate here.

But the Bucks only had about 9 months to prepare. The option fails when teams have time to gameplan for it.

But you question whether they are actually good, or just living off of weak offenses? Please.

if you want to look up the proficiency of big 10 offenses over the past 10 years, go ahead.

case in point: look at the last three years, where they had to play bowl games against teams that werent in the big 10 and actually had half decent offfenses..

Texas 24 Ohio State 21
LSU 38 Ohio State 24
Florida 41 Ohio State 14

so yes., i have no doubt ohio state's defensive numbers benefit greatly because they play in the big 10. kind of like claiming to be the tallest midget at a midget convention.

This is why no one uses his offense anymore. It results in tons of turnovers and if you have time to gameplan it and you're players are disciplined, you can easily shut it down. Also, lost in the discussion about this game was that Iowa had one hell of a defense.

As my first post back from exile.. I said it before and I'll say it again, an elite defense kills the triple option, end of story.

Welcome back buddy.

You are wrong. teehee...A well executed offense, totally gimmicky, will keep a solid defense on their heals.

But I believe defense wins championships. (A great offense can help).

You mean like Cincinnati v Florida or GT v Iowa? Stop the run and run the ball and you are 90% at a championship.

Iowa played some wonderfully disciplined ball. The gave up the first 7 points with 12:30 to go.

The showed that simple discipline shuts down a one-dimensional offense.

GT was unable to move the ball on them since they are not truly a downfield threat against a disciplined D. The LBs stayed home and took out their man. Just a tremendous job.

It showed why Meyer's offense is far more evolved than Johnson's. Meyer took the best parts of Triple Option and layered in a great passing game. The gators have double the passing attempts that GT has. They stretch the field horizontally and vertically.

With a decent secondary and a disciplined front 7 Defenses will eat up the Option.

Let's not get too excited about Clemson who had a sub-par rushing defense...

I tend to agree...The triple option (when ran well) CAN force a defense to over commit, opening themselves to get burn thru the air. If they dont over commit, you run the ball down their throats. Precise execution can overcome superior talent. As always, you need the players to be able to execute; the triple option requires quick, precise blocking combined with the RB/QB hitting the holes with the proper timing. The triple option can be a thing of beauty if ran properly, it may not be all that great to watch, but if your a lineman, offense or defense, you like the triple option.....ppl are going to get knocked around that day

What I thought was interesting about Paul Johnson's comments during and after the game is that he talked about them not executing. I knew it was a weak excuse for "I got out-coached"

The fact is this: Iowa prepped to stop everything that GT threw at them. The covered the gaps well, the LBs played their assignments extremely well, etc. And what you saw was simply what the Triple Option hoped to exploit...discipline...and the option requires you to face a more undisciplined team.

If you have equal athletes and top discipline on BOTH teams you will see the Triple Option fall apart because the defense will cover their man and hit him at the Line of Scrimmage.

Passing games were invented to stretch the field and open up the line to increase running yards.

The option died and faded away because it was not multi-dimensional enough, nor as explosive, and it increases the chance that the QB gets knocked out of the game.

It's a wonderful relic of a simpler time.

Jimmy Johnson was doing analysis on TV the night of the GT/Iowa game. He noted the option is a difficult offense to defend, almost impossible to prepare for in a week. But in bowl season when there's a month to prepare, it loses that advantage.
