I think I'm going to have to agree here and go with BGIF on saying Bumpus as DC, then Chuck to DB's coach. I don't quite think that B. Young's ready for D Line coach yet after 1 year teaching. But you never know, they say experience is the best teacher and he definitely has the experience.

BTW Bumpas can coach DL as well. Win/Win to me

Keep in mind your agreeing with my speculation on some possible coaches and assignments.



There have been mixed reports (rumors) that Young wasn't retained and then that he was, but still as a GA. Pick your rumor. For my speculative scenario Young would have to be offered the DL job. I was simply connecting the dots and then extrapolating a reasonable bit that he could be in place to visit a recruit next week.

I understand what your saying, and all that I have read is that he has been offered to stay on as a GA. But the more I think about it the better it sounds.
Even if he stays as a GA and ND hires Bumpas as a DC/DL coach Young could get another year under a knowledgeable coach to get fully trained. If Kelly and Bumpas agree that Young is ready to take over the D-Line next year that could leave Bumpas free to be the DC, or if Kelly doesnt like what Bumpas is doing he could let Young do D-Line and move Martin to DC.
That would give Martin a year to get used to working with our atheletes and get used to Division 1 coaching.
I do see Bumpas as a Kelly kind of guy though. He has to know how to teach the game to do so well at TCU. Yes he played lesser competition but he played it will less skilled players as well.
Now I know this is all speculation on my part but it sounds good to me.

Quinn was just hired to be the HC at Buffalo. I guess we'll need an OC now too. That kinda hurts!

At the moment the lack of anyone else qualified.

I was expecting Polian or Brown to stay on staff and perhaps add the title of Recruiting Coordinator as both were reported to be popular with recruits and HS coaches and enthusiastic hard working recruiters. But both are gone.

Tom Hinton was Kelly's Recruiting Coordinator at UC as well as RB Coach. Alford's retention indicates Hinton's won't be. But Hinton only got promoted to RC last Winter.

I believe Elston was UC's RC before Hinton and Elston played a key role in the recruiting efforts that built the current UC.

I'd acutally like to see a more seasoned RC with exisiting ties in the big recruiting states. I also have concern that Elston would be overloaded as present duties at UC include DLine Coach, (an area where ND needs lots of development) and he's the Special Teams Coach where he had a very good punter and a very good return game.

Tausch and Turk have great potential for ND's ST but ND's Return Game hasn't been very explosive and the coverage game broke down some last season. ND's Special Teams has the material to be special again. But adding RC to the DL and ST coach could be an overload.

Again, I'm speculating based upon who's supposed to becoming over to ND from UC and the lack of any hotshot recruiting names being mentioned so far. Denbrock isn't going to be the RC.

If you read the resume's of the coaches that have been with Kelly from the GVS days through CMU to UC most all of them have worn several hats moving from role to role on both sides of the ball. For a negative views you could say they're jacks of all trades master of none. From the positive side you could also say they evolved in their knowledge of the game and have an appreciation for the importance of all positions in putting together a TEAM effort. It's worked for Kelly so far.

I think Verducci, Hart, and Polian should've been kept. Verducci did a nice job w/ our o-line in his first year last year.

Wow. This staff hasnt panned out how i would have liked it at all. Kellys OC is gone, so go the fireworks on the offensive side maybe?

The S&C coach im okay with, we have needed a new one for years, but where the hell are we at with the rest of them. Polian and Tenuta are not retained, rightfully so, but polian could have been the recruit coordinator in place of Ianello.

Brown should have been retained IMO. Ianello you cant blame on kelly.... Alford was a good call. Is verducci gone for sure?

If you read the two ISD interviews, I think it really makes it sound like he has both coordinators lined up. Here's the quote: " I’ll put the right staff together and I’m very, very confident that we’ve secured both coordinators that I’m very familiar with.” That was yesterday, after Quinn was definitely gone. Take it for what you think it means...

He's not going to talk hires from Cincy... until after the Sugar Bowl... he doesn't want to dirsupt that team any more than possible... I think I read where he said his team will be on the road January 4th... recruiting.

What staff? As far as I can tell, the only for sure member of Kelly's staff, so far, is Coach Alford. Don't let all of the speculation get ya down. Wait until he names a staff, and then go from there.

Where I'm concerned is that we've heard a bunch of names leaked, guys like a) Denbrock b) Genyk c) Martin - but they're all guys who have coached against lower level talent (which doesn't really bother me) and none of whom have a track record of being excellent recruiters. (Which bothers me very much.)

Then in the interview yesterday Kelly talks about not having a traditional recruiting coordinator like Ianello (who I thought did a fabulous job). And it almost seems as if Kelly resents the thought that he should be expected to bring in top flight talent.

It all makes me wonder a little bit if Kelly believes that he can beat championship-level teams just by developing lower-level talent. (The use of the word RKG is so tired already.) And if that's true, I think that kind of overconfidence is akin to Weis' belief that he could beat those teams with X and O's.

I really hope I'm wrong about that. Really I do. I was rooting for us to hire Kelly over Stoops, but I always felt that Kelly would have to tweak his coaching system a little to take into account that he's now coaching in the big pond. Judging by some of the decisions he's made so far - it doesn't feel like his intent is to do that.

To me... I get the feeling that, as is historically the case, the first year of a new head coach isn't a great year to flex recruiting muscle... get what you can and grow from there. Once the results show on the field - the recruits will follow...

Now, when you have a regional coach... the nation-wide guys don't know him and what they hear... from other recruiters... is gonna suck. He has to earn their trust and respect and I have no doubt that will come with great classes in the future.

How great was CW's 2005 class?

Rumors from a Minnesota paper are that Mitch Browning is interviewing for the OL job. This would be a nice move from a recruiting standpoint. (Lemming has gone on the record calling him one of the better recruiters).
Only concern would be that he's historically recruited really well in Ohio which is a region that already seemed covered. I hope this happens though. He's a GA currently at Tennessee, so it seems like he would be interested.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but GAs can't go out on the road recruiting and they aren't allowed to make phone calls. That makes me wonder how he could be "one of the better recruiters."

This is job a temporary job while until he lands his next OL job. Prior to this he was an OC at Syracuse and before that he was a very successful OL coach at Minnesota. There's a going trend for good teams to pick up veteran coaches and make them GAs. Kiffin did this with Browning.

Prister's article references the Charley Waters comment (link in previous post) then provides background on Browning.

Browning was the offensive coordinator for the Gophers from 2000-06. Minnesota rushed and passed for more than 2,000 yards in each of his seven seasons as the Gophers' offensive coordinator. In 2003, Minnesota put up 6,430 yards total offense - a Big Ten record.
Browning worked under Mason for 21 seasons, making stops with him at Kent State and Kansas as well as Minnesota. Browning joined Greg Robinson's staff at Syracuse in 2008 as offensive coordinator/offensive line coach. Despite Syracuse's struggles, which led to the firing of Robinson and his staff, the Orange still managed to average 149 yards rushing per game and 4.6 yards per carry in '08. The year before Browning's arrival, Syracuse averaged 63 yards rushing per game and 2.0 yards per carry.
In last year's 24-23 upset loss to Syracuse, Notre Dame surrendered 170 yards rushing to the Orange, including 126 yards on 16 carries by seldom-used freshman running back Antwon Bailey

Browning's originally from Ohio and worked as a GA for Tennessee this past season. He was a GA at OSU 27 years earlier where he met Mason. He followed Mason to Kent St, KU and Minnesota.

Prister also comments on Denbrock and Genyk.

A source told Irish Illustrated Sunday that former Irish tackles/tight ends coach Mike Denbrock is expected to be named to the Notre Dame staff under Kelly. Although Kelly didn't confirm in a Tuesday interview with IrishIllustrated.com that Denbrock would be joining the staff, he did mention that Denbrock remained under contract at Indiana State, which would preclude him from leaving Indiana State as of Dec. 22 - the day of the interview.

Browning could be interviewing for the guards/centers job with the Irish. His background, however, makes him a candidate for the offensive coordinator's job, although former Eastern Michigan head coach Jeff Genyk - who reportedly attended Kelly's introductory press conference at Notre Dame on Dec. 11 - appears to be the leading candidate for the coordinator's job.

Genyk likely would double as the quarterbacks coach if long-time Kelly assistant Greg Forest joins Jeff Quinn at Buffalo as offensive coordinator instead of following Kelly to Notre Dame.

There's probably a good chance that Browning would help us when it comes to Seantrel Henderson. After all, he was the Minnesota line coach only a few seasons ago - and I'm sure that Brewster would have started recruiting Henderson as early as possible.

I'm really crossing my fingers here for this entire situation to work out.
