USC investigating tailback Joe McKnight's use of vehicle -- latimes.com

"....would be another hit to a USC athletics program already under investigation by the NCAA and the Pacific 10 Conference regarding allegations that former football tailback Reggie Bush and former basketball player O.J. Mayo received improper benefits while playing for the Trojans. The NCAA combined the investigations to examine whether the school failed to exert proper institutional control....."

What a joke. I'm sure it will be swept under Carrol's carpet. No wonder they recruit so well.

The new report is that it was McKnight's girlfriend's car.

That's not from a new report. It was reported from the very beginning that it was his girlfriend's car. But it was how SHE got it that was suspicious, and the whole suspicion revolves around her boss, who supposedly gave her the car, and who has a background in marketing and has a web domain called '4joemcknight'. The boss sent an email to all the media outlets explaining the situation, which of course all the USC fans are buying hook line and sinker.

You would think the NCAA would look past the lame excuses, but of course...they won't. We need SC to have another mediocre season for them to finally be punished...

This from a USC site:

Tight end Anthony McCoy, offensive tackle Tyron Smith and defensive lineman Averell Spicer have been ruled academically ineligible for the Emerald Bowl, according to the school's website.

I love it! I mean, how stupid do you have to be in order to fail academically at USC? Those dudes must literally be brain-dead LOL.

The hits just keep on coming for the Poodle...

Pete Carroll has to know this stuff is coming when grades are due at the end of each semester.

You know he's sitting his office with his head in his hands saying, "alright...who do we have this time around?"

I wish McCoy was ineligable for the ND game

So does Harrison Smith LOL.

Guys, just think about the entire situation: Has USC ever had players ruled academically ineligible for a BCS game? All these anti-geniuses they recruit and not ONE guy is ever ineligible? Not guys like Ray Malauga's senior year when he already had a foot out the door getting ready for the NFL (I'd seriously give my right arm to see his h.s. and college transcripts), or Mike Williams (who I know for a fact never went to class from a frat-boy I know who took classes with him)???

But suddenly, when his 8-4 team is preparing for something called the Emerald Bowl, and Joe McKnight is being investigated for using a car illegally, Petey and Co. decide to finally punish guys for their GPA. Riiiiiiiiggghhhhhttt. Sorry boys, call me a skeptic, but I'm not buying it. SC is just trying to pretent they are playing by the rules, when everyone knows they're not...

southern cal, southern cal------

southern cal, southern cal------

Still love saying that, now they loose 3 front line players for the bowl due to academics. Silly boys letting school work get in the way of a good football career. Might it be the playing field is being leveled. As we all know what goes around comes around. Notre Dame/southern cal has always had balances of power shifts as we have witnessed these past 8 yrs. The next shift may be coming. Coach 'em up and win Mr Kelly.

The hits just keep coming for USC.

Starting running back and leading rusher Joe McKnight did not travel with the Trojans to the Bay Area for Saturday's Emerald Bowl against Boston College, while tight end Anthony McCoy, offensive tackle Tyron Smith and defensive tackle Averell Spicer have been ruled academically ineligible, the school announced.

"[McKnight] has some paperwork he needs to do and it's best for him to stay in L.A. so he can be available to finish it," Trojans coach Pete Carroll said.

Carroll did not have a timetable for McKnight's return.

"We don't know right now how long this will take," he said.

McCoy and Smith are both starters and earned honorable mention All-Pac-10 honors. Spicer is a key reserve. McCoy and Spicer are both seniors, so their USC careers are over.

"We're really disappointed these guys didn't come through," Carroll said in a statement. "They had all the help in the world to get it done and they didn't do it."

Late Friday, the Los Angeles Times reported that McKnight had been using a 2006 Land Rover that belonged to a Santa Monica businessman who reportedly employs McKnight's girlfriend. That could violate NCAA rules as an extra benefit, which could also make the junior ineligible for the bowl game.

McCoy will be replaced by sophomore Rhett Ellison, while redshirt freshman Matt Kalil will replace Smith.

McKnight has denied driving the car, but the Los Angeles Times said in a story that one of its reporters has seen USC's leading rusher driving the SUV several times.

USC is investigating McKnight's use of the vehicle to find out if it is in violation of NCAA rules.

The businessman, Scott Schenter, told the Times that McKnight's girlfriend owns the car and makes the payments and that he helped purchase it when her family had trouble qualifying for a loan.

USC is already being investigated by the NCAA and Pac-10 regarding accusations that running back Reggie Bush and basketball star O.J. Mayo received improper benefits during their time at the school.

Players being academically ineligible, and the supposed 'usc self-investigation with mcknight' is all because the usc alumns 'in the know' about the bush trial (which is under a gag order) think that this will look good to the NCAA. They think it will look like they are policing themselves.

Here is yet ANOTHER attempt by USC to operate in the grey area, and here we will see ANOTHER example of the in eptitude and uselessness of the NCAA and its comical rules.

In this bad economics times, the salaries for those NCAA officials can better spent, then to go to those fools.

McKnight will not be playing in the Emerald Bowl... College Football Live said he did not travel with the team...

They used the words... loss of institutional control - being a possibility.

Loss of bowel control? This stinks to high heaven.

Too much money at play...this isn't SMU.

unfortuneatly...I believe this is all about money.

Dez Bryant made the mistake of playing for OKLA St. If he were playing for USC, you can bet your last dollar that he would have played all year. I truly believe that.

The NCAA comes down hard and fast on Dez Bryant, a kid who made a mistake and owned up to it.

USC can blantantly flaunt the rules again and again, but as long as they are in the BCS discussion, not a damn thing will happen. You can be sure that USC and PTC wont own up to shit.

For usc to even see any type of penalty, they will need another mediocre year on the field, and the BCS needs another West Coast team to replace USC to make them(BCS) look legitimate. until those things happens, USC will continue to get a free ride.....

I've come to the point now that I dont blame USC at all. I mean, if you are continously breaking the rules and getting away with it, why comply??

working for a school district, I have heard a number of teachers tell me their philosophy when it comes to following rules. I know this does not represent all teachers but it does lend an insight into education workplace behavior:

Why ask and get denied, when you can do what you want to do and beg for forgiveness later?

nothing short of all bush victories vacated, and all Mayo victories vacated, and McKnight being ineligible is acceptable. anything less shows the NCAA rules committee is completely absolete, inept, ineffective, and a waste of resources and time.

/sarcasm
thank god Dez Bryant didnt get to play this year...he was a cancer to college football
