Back to the recruit.

According to Jason Sapp, B&G, Collinsworth has only taken one offical to Harvard. His last official will be to ND in January. Austin made an unoffical to ND on Dec 17th and announced his commitment the next day.

Odd..

Always took his Dad for ND hater
Yes, but not if it has to with family and getting into Notre Dame for the education/football history. I just want his Dad to keep a low (very low) profile and just let the kid be . Good luck Chris and welcome aboard.

I like Cris Collinsworth because he speaks his mind. Does anybody have any quotes where he was taking cheap (untrue) shots at ND? There has been plenty to criticize over the past 15 years. Somebody on this board said, "...he sucks." He choses ND over Harvard and Stanford, and is the MVP of the state championship game, and ND fans are saying he sucks. In my opinion, this is exactly the kind of guy ND should want representing the program. I hope his Dad shows up in South Bend decked out in Irish gear.

I love Papa Collinsworth. He's my favorite analyst. He tells just like he sees it, and he REALLY knows the game. I didn't like it when he ripped ND of course, but I'm in the minority when I say I love it when he does games. Give me Gus Johnson on play-by-play and Collinsworth on color and I'm a happy man...

Then you're in agreement with a lot of other ND fans.

I posted this back in post #5 in this thread:

Would be kind of bittersweet if he ends up at ND and his dad, who used to love to skewer ND football on TV, would be wearing ND gear and cheering for his ND son.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

I think this kid will do well, hopefully at safety though. As to those saying he's only a 3 star well if we want to get higher stars lets show those higher stars that we can teach and get them into the pro's higher than a 5th round (?) -no disrespect to Zibby he's always one of my favorites but if he was taught more think how well he could have done instead of regressing.

It's not the round that one gets drafted, but how they perform once they get their chance. Bart Starr for instance was drafted in the 17th round (200th pick)) and he's in the hall of fame!

Thats just about what I'm saying with the star system. If we can show the 5 stars what we can do with the 3 stars just think how they would feel if they think they can get better. Then we get teh 4 and 5 star players here and really bushwack USC and the other ilk (ie UM).

What kind of players do you think Brian Kelly has been winning with for the past six years?

Two and three stars.

Please, don't panic.

I remember seeing an interview with BK long before he was speculated to be in the running for the HC at ND. I think it was the game Zach Collaros came in and on the first play ran for an 80 yard td, but back to my point. At the end of the game one of the most striking things he said was that one of his first priorities when he took over at UC was to bring in some "winners", meaning guys who had a proven track record of winning to change the tone. I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, but I do think it's critical he holds the class he has atm together to keep himself from having huge gaps on the depth chart. Just my two cents on this guy, overall I think it's a good commit.

Don't forget most BCS teams are built on 3 and 4 star talents with an occassionall 5 star (gamechanger).

I'd say that this is kind of a blanket statement which is not overly true. First of all, 5 stars are "occasional" players as it is - for any team. However, I think if you look at the top teams, they generally do have recruiting classes that are up there, for sure. I think there is definitely a correlation.

This is in no way a criticism of anything Kelly has done so far at all, but I think it is slightly ignorant to say - considering that having a recruiting class with 3 and 4 star talent, with occasional 5 stars is considered a darn good class...

Here's a quote from a guy off another website.

Even a guy who has seen in person says against other sub par talent he doesn't stand out..

That guy cheers for UK, who really wanted Austin very badly. They are talking a lot of crap about him now, though they thought he was a lock just a week ago.

I too have seen him play. Your quote didn't show up as I quoted you, but the poster you were quoting was dogging Austin in his championship game. He failed to tell you that Austin was playing with several broken bones in his hand. He still rushed for 170 and 3 TD's, in a 35-7 win. He's played hurt for awhile, chosing too although the coaches want to sit him.

He's been the best players for 3 years, on a team that it rated either #2 or #4 nationally, depending on the pole. His team, from a little school, beat Cincy St X this year, and beat them soundly. His team is really a 3A (out of 6 classes) but plays up 2 classes to 5A. They are 56-1 in the last three years with him as a starter. Each of those 3 years, Austin has played a different position, and excelled at each, at WR, DB and RB this year. I have no idea why they switch him each year, but he's proved his mettle.

It's threads like this that earn ND fans their (sometimes well deserved) title of most arrogant fan base. I almost puked in my mouth reading this thread.

Give the kid a break, he plays in Kentucky.......he is not playing in a football hotbed, it is probably a feat in itself to get noticed where he plays.

Again, that little team plays the likes of Moeller, Colrain, Cincy St X, Louisville Trinity and others. Top 5 in the country, top 20 the last 3 years straight.

I'm glad the kid decided to come to Notre Dame. He seems like a good fit for the school. And he's higher rated than Kyle McCarthy was a number of years ago. I'd say that worked out OK at least.

And for those who are already criticizing Kelly's recruiting, wasn't Weis' first verbal Munir Prince? How good of a reflection of Weis' recruiting ability was that? I think it'll be OK, I don't believe Kelly is going to stock the roster with nothing but low 3-stars, but you have to start somewhere.

SBT article from yesterday:

South Bend Tribune: Notre Dame football: Recruit Collinsworth likes Kelly's attitude

“(Coach Kelly)'s very competitive, which I fit in with perfectly,” Collinsworth said Thursday afternoon during preparations for Saturday's U.S. Army All-American Bowl. “From the beginning, I just felt a connection with him.”

“When he went to Notre Dame,” Collinsworth said, “it was just the best of both worlds.”

-The plan is for Austin to start at a slot receiver, with a move as an open possibility.

Interesting about Cris:
The elder Collinsworth tried to stay out of his son's recruitment as much as he could.

“But as soon as I said, Notre Dame, he said, ‘That was my choice too,'” Austin recalled. “It was all good.”

I will hate Cris Collinsworth no matter how much I ever like Austin. If Mark May had a son who came to ND, well actually it would probably make me hate Mark May even more.

I like Austin's versatility though. I'd rather see him take a crack at safety though as opposed to WR. We are fine there and have excellent slot candidates in TJ, Jackson, and Toma.

Lol, I don't think this will happen, but imagine if this kid turns into a real star? WR, S, either position, doesn't really matter. You know C. Collinsworth will talk about it constantly on Sunday night, or it'll be brought up. And then we'll have to hear him praising Notre Dame left and right. I'm not sure how a lot of people would be able to react to that...

"Great hips, great acceleration, loves to play the game. Physically will be able to compete immediately."

Brian Kelly on Safety Collinsworth

At 6-1 195 he's 2 inches taller and 5 pounds heavier than the guy that went that opted to play on the Blue Field, Jeremy whatever his name was.

Bring it on, Austin!

I also recall his unnecessarily acrid barbs but I find some justice that he will now cheer for ND's success and struggle with its defeats like the rest of us. "Cheer cheer for old Notre Dame!"

Good call, Kelly agrees with you.
