Hey,
Just got a really nice article thats really encouraging and breath of fresh air. What I've said for sooooooo long.

Kelly bringing what Weis couldn't: Enthusiasm, fun :: CHICAGO SUN-TIMES :: Neil Hayes

''These kids need to be energized,'' said former All-American defensive lineman Chris Zorich, who works for the university and watched with the standing-room only crowd in the back of the 150-seat amphitheater. ''What we saw last year -- the lack of excitement -- was not the players' fault by any means. It was the process by which they were taught football.

love that quote. Right on.

How was it that Lou put it about the '09 team?

"A lack of menatal and physical toughness"?

I am not sure "excitement" cures those ills - but, I would say it will be a great start! :)

Go coach BK! Instill fear and excitement!

Thx IB81 - no, you're dealing with a computer geek-o-vert.

IOW - I suck at these posting know-hows. ;)

I must say, however, the posting here at IE is muchofriendlier than the *main* Irish boards.

Been a *troll* for a while. Watch it when you cross bridges guys.

Did anyone tell you about "New Guy Beer Nights"? New guys are required to buy the beer, until they are no longer the new guy. Welcome aboard!!

Not to be a negative-nancy, but I remember hearing the exact same thing when Charlie was hired. The whole offense was excited.

Not saying that means Kelly won't work out or any other ridiculous conclusions like that. I just will be more impressed when they are still excited this time next year than I am that they're excited now. Who wouldn't be excited now? They finally don't have to deal with the speculations of Will Weis be fired?/Who will take over for Weis now that he's fired?, and they're in the honeymoon period with their new coach.

Again, I like the hire, not trying to be a glass-is-half-empty guy. Just don't love hearing Zorich say all these problems revolve around Charlie not being "exciting" enough. Winning is exciting. When they're winning, Tom Coughlin could be the coach (possible the most humorless man since Stalin), and they'd be excited.

I agree.

Also, what's a player supposed to say? I was frowning when Coach Kelly was hired, this sucks I want to go home? Don't get me wrong, I'm sure they're excited, but lets check back in with them in late October or November. Also, I've never understood why Charlie gets ragged on for not being exciting or playing the college game, he led a great prep rally, brought in all the legends of ND, did things like green jersey for USC etc... the man was ND distilled into its purest form. He just had bad knees.

I totally agree...what you are seeing/reading is the positive beginning of the hype machine that will eventually turn negative and take him down. simple analysis of the the hire/fire ND cycle is a great reference point. I see status quo; same ol' same ol'.

The Willingham 'surge' got him initially to 8-0 - he was eventually fired
The Weis 'surge' got him the ten year contract - he was eventually fired

I expect a 'surge' from Kelly...but I wont be fooled by it this time around.

The hype-machine:
All the positive stuff you hear is the beginning-part, which is what we are seeing now; we just saw the end-part of the hype machine over the last year or so with CW when it was ever increasingly a more difficult environment to succeed in.

TDHeysus: lots of good points, but I'm just trying to enjoy the honeymoon.

Hope that Kelly can break that cycle, that would be his biggest accomplishment among the many that are expected of him.

I hear what youre saying but I wouldnt say its a trend because back to back coaches had this "surge"

Davie had no surge, Holtz had no surge. If it goes back 5 coaches deep then I would put stock in it.

I dont really feel any manufactured hype this time around. I think the consensus is that this guy is a damn good college coach and there is no gimmick to rally around.

If a company changes CEO's the less earth moving the transition is the better.

Dont see any players running for cover, dont hear of any recruits bailing. Kelly didnt shred a truck full of documents at Cinci as far as we know. Isnt calling out any coaches or teams.....nice and smooth.

Willingham was lazy and he solidified his coaching deficiencies with his destruction of the UW program

Weis had good intentions but just didn't get the job done. His inability to right the defensive ship was his downfall

Kelly is a proven winner at every stop and there's no debating about who is in control. He takes ownership of his team and develops his players. I will be shocked if we see his players constantly out of position and confused. I'm drinking the Kelly KoolAid right now i know, but the guy has a different air about him then Ty and Charlie. I hope in a few years we'll need to add more bandwagons to accomodate all the fans.

Agree on this but what i think Heysus is tryig to get at is how will he handle the pressure at ND. A loss to Pitt at the end of the year at Cinci is still a good year. At ND he blew a National Championship

true. hopefully his seasoning as a winning college football coach will allow him to handle this job. i think he certainly has the charisma to handle the media and will embrace the alumni and fans. i'm bullish, for the moment!

The thing is, Davie-to a degree, Wilingham, and Weis are the first three coaches of the 24 hour news cycle+ Internet era. Sites like this one, blogs across the country, ESPN, newspapers, everybody wants something to talk about when it comes to ND. There's excitement at the start and the second the going gets tough the meme becomes the coach is struggling...leading to what should be no stories building a momentum of their own. (Swarbrick not saying anything last year for a week at the end of the season as to whether or not he would keep CW is a great example of this...usually, you assume its a non-story because the man had like 27 years left on his contract, but speculation fed on itself and it soon came to define this year.)

Right now everybody's in the fluff phase. Kelly has a great record, everybody's interested in his generic quotes/twitter account/where he wants to move, he has an interesting system, etc...etc... its easy to talk about and it sells stories. But all the evidence is that when the going gets tough, and it will at some point, the same forces that are currently building Kelly up will turn on him, and it will be ugly. And I know the point I'm making, and I think TDHeysus is on the same page as me on this, is that in the long run this is an unsustainable way to run a program. ND can't be going through coaches every five years, it can't be hailing a new savior one day and then tearing him down the next. It's bad for the football program and, quite frankly, it seems to go against many of the institution's core values (loyalty, perseverance, hard work, faith).

I hope to see Kelly do well. I really do. I'm buying into his approach, his attitude, everything. But sooner or later he will struggle. And that's when the true test of this hire will become clear. Will he fold under pressure? Will he be chewed up like every other ND coach (even Lou did NOT leave the university on his own terms, you can tell listening to him that he couldn't take it any more). Will ND fans be willing to stick by Kelly like they've been unwilling to do with anybody else?

LOL :) some funny comments ya'll :-D

but You all say that the it was the same way with Weis. but it wasn't. No one said that they hadn't felt this kind of energy since Holtz, when Weis or Davie or Tyrone was hired.
No one was this energetic nor enthusicastic.
but in essence you all are obviously 100% correct. If we don't win none of this matters. Only time can tell the full story of what is Kelly.
