Now then...Looking ahead...The defense can only get better (since they couldn't get much worse) and the offense won't miss a beat...We all know Clausen and Tate were studs; but this time we have guys ready to step in (Crist and Floyd) and our offense will be very solid and efficient...In fact, they'll probably be even more explosive under Kelly's schemes...Sooooo, with a more explosive offense, improved defense, improved special teams, and the team being hungrier and re-energized overall, I will go ahead and make the bold prediction right now: 11-0 heading out to visit USC...and that will be one helluva ballgame...That game will determine either a NC season for us or just a BCS bowl bid...but I'm confident in us playing in a BCS bowl game next season (and BK will win "coach of the year" honors for his work at ND)...End of story...My prediction won't change regardless of who is, or isn't, brought in...That's my expectation because that's the ND standard.

Some questions & thoughts:

1) the offense won't miss a beat when the best quarterback and the best wide receiver (statistically) to ever play at Notre Dame leave early for the draft?
2) the offense won't miss a beat implementing a completely new system in the spring?
3) the offense won't miss a beat with a QB who may not be ready for action until the fall?
4) how is it going to be more explosive with Tate gone?
5) The defense will improve b/c you are right, they can't get much worse. However, we still don't have a competent defensive line - that won't change in a year. There are so many other problems with the defense it probably deserves its own post.
5) So let me get this straight: You predict 11-1 or 12-0 every single year irrelevant of what is happening inside the ND football program? Did you predict we'd go undefeated in 2007? The only realistic expectation ND alumni/sub-alums can have right now is that Kelly will improve this football team, hopefully drastically. But to expect an undefeated season after losing Clausen and Tate leave is kind of ridiculous
6) The ND standard has changed. It was changed by the ND administration when it made 4 bad coaching hires in a row. They have shown an indifference to the football program since Lou was forced out. Lets hope Kelly can return the program to a level where 11-1 and 12-0 is the standard - right now every realistic person here should expect (and hope for) a vastly improved football team, regardless of record.

I don’t think learning Kelly’s offense is going to be all that difficult. Yes there will be a few problems but a pro style offense is so complicated and Kelly’s spread you run a lot of the same formations and routs. It’s kinda like going from a calculus and going to going back to Algerbra 2. You will forget a few things but you will be caught up to speed in a hurry b/c its easier than what your accustom to.

I like Dayne's wheels. I think it will be able to open up a completely new wrinkle to the O.

I've said if before, if the O line comes together... the Offense won't miss a beat (sorry mooney)... the D line won't be a bunch of underclassmen now... we'll be a good team next year, I'm never preciting a BCS bowl until we prove we can go and win there... but we'll be solid... very, very talented team

12-0

That's my prediction for now, until we see what happens with Spring ball/ Crist/ the D/ Manti, etc...
But seriously, I watched high school highlights of Crist on youtube the other day and he is a BEAST. If that knee is even 90% he'll be just fine under center, especially with 2 years of time to learn from Jimmy and you-know-who.

7-5 and we will be calling for BK's head....LOL

and it will be the guys that were begging for Kelly that do so.

i agree with camp 8 wins is wherei am at right now but a 9-10 win season is a possibility depending on who they get to coach the D

Wayyyyyyyyyy to early for these predictions. My God we just got a coach. We don't even know who is going to be on the field (5th years). Why don't we do first things first?

1) Get a coaching staff together

2) Solidify and sign the 2010 recruiting class in February

3) Get through spring ball

4) Let's do our evaluations/ predictions after the spring game in April.

Making predictions now is as useful as making predictions about the 2012 pres. election

Exactly, and hate to say this but we have a big question mark at QB with Crist and his recovery and no viable back ups yet.

Great comment Jason, on the money. I was against Kelly but when it was clear that no one else of stature was coming to coach, we got the next best fit. I have no illusions about next season but the ND Nation's state of mind is fragile at best. So a 7-5 season will fire up the doubters.

I'm optimistic and going with 10-2. I was originally worried about QB (think Dayne will be awesome, but injury prone now); but look at UC this year. Pike was in the Heisman talk until he got hurt - everyone said the Bearcats were done - the back up steps in and has as good or better numbers than Pike - a kind of two QB system in play - neither of these guys have the talent of Jimmy. I think BK will make whomever a top level QB in his offense; especially in Crist stay healthy.

Can we just beat USC, I would be happy with that. If we could just beat UM and USC, I would be happy. Of course the more wins the better, but beating those teams just makes me feel good!

Prediction 9-3

This team is going to be better regardless if we have Clausen or not. We have a 3 year starter at RB, Michael Floyd, Kyle Rudolph, and a 5 star QB running our offense with 9 or 10 returning starters on defense. With the right scheme and enough improvement, with a top 40 defense we can be a damn good football team because you know we will average atleast 30 points on O.

I say we lose to Pitt and USC.

I think we can beat both.

Each are within a touchdown again.

USC we might win, just because BK plays good in rivalry games

My logic behind me saying 11-0 heading out to play USC is that Kelly is an offensive guru...He may not be an all in-depth, offensive guru like Weis was, but he knows what is effective and works tirelessly to perfect it...as someone said, Weis' offense was like calculus...Kelly's is like Algebra II...Kelly's is easier to learn and perfect...I believe Crist is a stud and Floyd will prove himself to be an absolute beast (and don't sleep on Shaq Evans!)...Of course our offense will have some transitional hiccups, that's to be expected, but they will be more explosive then we've EVER seen an Irish offense...as for defense, we both agree that it can only improve...If we would've played solid defense this past year, (not great or even good, just solid) we would've been looking at a BCS bowl because our offense was that good...Next year, due to our defense being improved, as well as our special teams, there is no way we miss out on a BCS bowl bid...We should be favored in all of our games (pending USC)...I'll take the odds, and BK's reputation for a strong work ethic, and stick with 11-0 going to play USC...It doesn't matter who comes to ND via recruiting or who's on the sidelines coaching the D (as long as it's not Minter lol)...The only place to go is up...CW did a great job at recruiting, so the talent level is already greater then BK has ever had in a team before...

Lastly, the ND standard may have changed for some of us; but that's ok...The facts are that the ND product hasn't been the best over the last 2 decades... and seeing is believing...But I think that over the past "X" amount of years, we've all looked at the schedule at some point and thought "ND should win at least 10 games" or "ND is better then what they're showing"...I have faith BK will not only get us back to that level where we all "expect" ND to win 10+ games a year, but he will also have our players playing the game with a higher level of intensity then we've seen in some time and that they will also be playing more complete, and fundamentally sound, games on both sides of the ball...With that type of improvement and with the schedule we play, there is no reason why 11-0 with USC remaining should sound too crazy or unrealistic for us ND fans....Just Gotta Believe!

ND's record perhaps 8-4 or even worse, perhaps 10-2 or even better. The defense will determine much of that record. I found that some times we were out of position to make a play on defense. But many times the defender was there. He simply missed the tackle. Execution is the key to winning. Whether it be on offense or defense. You have to make the blocks and hit the pass routes, hit the gaps on runs, and run the correct route on passes. On defense you must wrap up. wrapping up is just as important as hitting hard.
It is just as important as being in the right place to make a play. The defense must attack with as much tenacity as the offense attacks. Much will depend on the discipline that Coach Kelly brings. Penalties are often a lack of focus and discipline. Focus and discipilne are the two glaring shortcomings on ND defense. If these two areas are not addressed it will not matter who is throwing or running the football we will not be successful. On the otherhand if they are, it will not matter who is throwing or running the football we will be successful. Execution on defense is the key to this season, or a lack thereof. One more stop per game in the losses would mean we would be 12-0. 2-3 more stops would mean we would have dominated everyone we played. Ask yourself, in the losses did we or did we not have the opportunity to make at least one more defensive stop?

8-4, it's a step in the right direction if they win the games they're supposed to win and compete in the others. Couldn't agree more that penalties are often a lack of focus and discipline. The difference has to be the Defense and making tackles.

I think what Kelly CAN bring to this team is an attitude that we don't lose at home. I have a feeling that the energy in the old stadium is going to be at a fevered pitch for the ENTIRE season, and that we may see the return of a true, consistent home-field advantage.

That's 7 W's. Stanford without Gerhart is down next year, and I can't imagine that Pitt will have a QB playing as consistent as Stull, which will allow us to key on Lewis.

On the road? If we play well in Spartyville it's a laugher, not a nailbiter. Old Man Shinskie will NEVER do that to us again, and then there's the jimmy hats. I like our chances in every game.

Sign me up for 12.

I have given this some serious thought. I think we go 25-17 next year, but all 17 will be last minute losses.

I'm going with 9-3. It's logical because I don't think our defense will be much better unless we start landing some amazing talent to help T'eo.

I'm sorry, but you guys are way more optimistic than I am about next year. 7-5 would not surprise me at all. The defense is in shambles, and we don't know who the DC is yet. And the offense, which is both Notre Dame and Kelly's specialty, is quarterback-less, missing its best receiver (although Floyd is also great and still around), and will be replacing 4/5's of the offensive line. That's a whole lot of trouble right there. Imo, the Irish 2010 season relies way too much on a torn ACL & its ability to recover fast enough for Crist to get meaningful snaps in in the summer practices, at least.

The following season wouldn't surprise me at all:

vs Purdue W
vs Michigan W
@ MSU L
vs Stanford W
@ BC L
vs Pitt L
vs WMU W
@ Navy W
vs Tulsa W
vs Utah L
@ Army W
@ USC L
