12/5 Wieneke SBT article claims according to Lemming ND will be in good shape if theynew staff has good recruiters.

18 verbals

Some remaining Prospects:

Kyle Prater, WR,
His parents like ND. With an offensive-minded coach, the Irish have a shot.

Seantrel Henderson, OT, ND remains in play. Henderson had a great visit and his relationship with Michael Floyd both help. The new staff needs to get Henderson back on campus.

Anthony Barr, ATH Looked like a lock to Notre Dame when Weis was coaching. If Barr lands at UCLA, the coaching change has given him reason to stay home

Bruce Gaston, DT, Looked like a guy ND would land under Weis. Now other schools recruiting him. Lemming termed Gaston "up in the air."

Beau Allen, DT, Another guy it looked ND was going to land. New coaching staff still can.

J.R. Ferguson, DE, His father loved ND visit. Lemming believes ND still has a good shot.

Matt James, OT. At one time ND was tied with CIncy and OSU. Probably lower now, although if Cincinnati coach Brian Kelly gets the job, those odds change.

James Stone, OT Bama has made up ground since Weis was fired and it looks like Stone is leaning that way.

LaMarcus Joyner, CB, . Dropped ND after Weis was fired.

ISD reported today that Stone has dropped ND from his list and is now expected to choose between Alabama and Auburn.

If Brian Kelly can come in and secure our current committments and add Henderson, Matt James, Anthony Barr, and another 1-2 sleepers (Where have you gone Corey Cooper), we have to consider this years recruiting class a huge success.

It doesn't sound like Chris Martin, Kyle Prater (he officially committed to USC a few weeks back), and Lamarcus Joyner have any interest, but I find it hard to believe they won't at least listen to what Brian Kelly has to say. At one point, all three of these guys were extremely high on Notre Dame. Hell, Chris Martin spent the last 8 months committed to us. Despite this stance of "I'm eliminating them from consideration", you have to believe they will at least re-visit the idea of committing after we settle on a coach. Unless, of course, Weis was the lone reason for their interest in the first place, which I find hard to believe...

With BK we should be able to get Matt James, at least.

IF he was headed to Cincy because of the coach and not be because he's a legacy. Has James eliminated OSU? I don't recall reading he has.

If we accept the guys that have dropped us as officially gone. By my count we still have a realistic shot with 14 recruits. That is assuming none come with the new HC.

lat i checked it was status quo with james but he was really down on the Weis firing. Barr, Joyner, Ferguson and Martin have no relationship with Kelly and thats alot of ground to make up in 2 months if there is an entirely new staff

Notre Dame recruiting going strong without a coach - Campus Rivalry: College BCS Football News, Recruiting, Game Picks, and More - USATODAY.com

129/09
Even without a coach, Notre Dame hasn't missed much in the way of recruiting. The Irish picked up a commitment from Louis Nix, a defensive tackle from Jacksonville, Fla., the day after Charlie Weis was fired. The rest of the class recruited by Weis appears to be in tact with the only likely departure being Chris Martin of Aurora, Colo.
One possible hiccup could come if they lose quarterback Andrew Hendrix of Cincinnati. With Jimmy Clausen leaving for the NFL and Dayne Crist out with an ACL injury, Hendrix could walk right into the starting job.
Hendrix says other schools have called to gauge his interest. He will wait to see what type of system the new Notre Dame coach runs before making a final decision. If the rumor mill is correct and Brian Kelly is the choice, Hendrix will have had the opportunity to watch the Cincinnati offense for the past three years.
Why has Notre Dame been able to hang on to most of their commitments? Players mostly cite the tradition and academics making the experience as important as the coach.
"I feel like the coach doesn't make Notre Dame," said Nix. "Notre Dame's going to be Notre Dame regardless if there's a coach or not. I want to come there for the school, not for the coach."

Looks like some of our verbals have already given Kelly their approval.... saw the headline on Rivals but I can't read it.

Rivals --Several recruits are already on record in favor of Brian Kelly's hiring as Bennett Jackson, Daniel Smith, Alex Welch, Toney Hurd Jr. and Chris Badger spoke Thursday afternoon about their new coach.

Why would any recruit with a desire to play in the NFL not look forward to playing for a winning coach? Those who are contemplating switching their commitment need to take a deep breath and recognize the value of an ND eduacation after football. Kelly is a winner, not only in football but also in graduating his players.

Scout.com: The Brian Kelly Effect On Ohio Recruiting

Brian Kelly has built a great reputation among high school football coaches and players in Ohio, a reputation that is now enhanced by being the head coach at Notre Dame.
Charlie Weis was never accepted as a recruiter in Ohio, not by the high school coaches, or the players. Brian Kelly doesn't have that problem, and by taking the head coaching position at Notre Dame, he just eliminated the only problem he had in Ohio, the fact that Cincinnati football is viewed as minor league compared to Ohio State
.

Interesting article but I don't recall Parshegian, Devine, Faust, or Holtz ever having an even contest with OSU for in-state talent. Kelly and ND together may do better in Ohio but the writer is setting up false expectations.

Kelly's first major battle with Ohio State and Jim Tressel involves Cincinnati St. Xavier star offensive lineman Matt James, and it's a recruiting war Kelly entered into as the Cincinnati head coach.

If Kelly is able to land James for the Fighting Irish, it will signal the first shot being fired in what could now be described as a fair fight between the Buckeyes and the Fighting Irish. Charlie Weis going against Jim Tressel in recruiting the top football talent in Ohio was anything but an even contest.

James would be a good start in the battle for Ohio and would will a major need.

Getting players from Ohio and PA and Michigan is good but we have to continue to go into Florida and CA if we wanna be considered more than just another big 10 type team.

Blake Luders re-affirmed his committment to Notre Dame today.

Good to hear. Although some people have been panicking about us losing Chris Martin, I feel as if Blake will truly be a special player on the defensive side of the ball and IMO is vastly underrated.

I agree that Florida and Cali recruiting is essential. Ohio plays really good football and has several top prospects every year. Ever since the vest has been at OSU he has made it a priority to put up a fence around Ohio. This was particularly important because Ohio State lost out on a lot of home grown talent under Cooper. In the ten seasons prior to Tressel taking over, OSU lost out on six of the state's Mr. Football award winners including, Marc Edwards, Tony Fisher, Charles Woodson, and Curtis Enis. The bottom line is Kelly needs to get back the territory that Willingham lost and what Weis couldn't recover. Cincy and Cleveland specifcally.

The numbers don't support you. Tressel may have built a fence but Weis did fairly well in Ohio and Tressel has been jumping that fence in the other direction in recent years to get his 5 star guys from PA and FL. Check the Rivals Commitment Lists Notre Dame Commit List for 2010

Currently OSU had no 5 stars from OH just 4 star guys like ND's Hendrix and Welch and they're both battling for James.

In '09 OSU got two 5 stars Bell and Brown were both from Monroeville PA

In '08 OSU had two 5 stars, Adams from OH and the OL Brewster from FL

In '07 OSU had no 5 stars

In '06 OSU had two 5 stars from OH Rose for Glenville and Wells

In '05 they had one 5 Star Boone

I see a lot of 3 and 4 star kids and some 2's from OH for OSU in those years.

Meanwhile ND was picking up teh McCarthy Brothers, Fox, 5 Star Rudolph, Burton, Wade, Ryan, and Walker. Yes ND got Edwards, and Fisher and before them guys like Hunter, Heimkreiter, and Guglielmi, Mastak, the Lopienskis, and the Townsends, O'Leary, Page, et al but I don't recall ND ever reeling in a haul in a single year from OSU even during the Cerrato years.

Rudolph and the McCarthy brothers are the only ones who OSU offered. Actually this is a trend that is apparent throughout the tenure of Jim Tressel. The Ohio players that OSU offer ultimately end up Buckeyes. Look at the top ten players in the state from 05-09. Rivals.com Prospect Rankings Six during that time period in the top ten offered by OSU have not picked OSU. Ironically Boren is now in Columbus. While 5* accolades might be absent, quality talent is not. Look at the Ohio State two deep over the same time period. 15 in 09, 16 in 08, 17 in 07, 18 in 06, 13 in 05 players from Ohio. FWIW Ohio State is playing in their 8th BCS game, most all time.

The point I was trying to make is that Ohio State has been the best team in the midwest since Tressel's arrival. Recruiting the home grown talent has defined Tressel's teams. I think Notre Dame can do better and Kelly could provide that extra push.

Unfortunately I see the offensive recruiting as not being a problem. As for the defensive side of the ball, it's going to be a fucking nightmare. Seeing as how they let go of their best defensive recruiter, whoever Kelly brings in especially if it's his DC from Cincy, top recruits are going to look at how fucking bad that d was and more than likely pass on ND.
