I must admit that I did indeed cringe when Brian talked about a "nasty" football team.

You are going to have a hard-working, intelligent...nasty football team. - Charlie Weis, 2004

The word "nasty" doesn't appear in the transcript.

Did you really hear Kelly say "nasty" or was it just a dormant brain cell flashback?

I don't recall a "nasty" comment. I do remember him saying he wants "tough gentlemen." ... Players who play hard through 4 quarters and who are gentlemen off the field. ...

Somebody was listening.

So what I can tell you today is that our football players will continue to represent the model of Notre Dame. I want tough gentlemen. I want football players that are mentally and physically tough that will play for four quarters, and I want gentlemen off the field that we all can be proud of. And we will do that here at Notre Dame.

I am glad I am not crazy. I heard that and thought wow that is harsh the whole Burger King, X's and O's thing. Direct shot at Charlie. I mean yeah he was over weight and probably had too much fast food, but the reason he was unsuccessful was not because he didn't work hard. He gave every fiber of his being, and in the end hired the wrong defensive coach and that was his un-doing.

I am a huge Packers fan and Mike McCarty is one of those offensive guru's, but they struggled over the past few years on defense. He went out and hired the best D-Corr. he could find and now they are 9-4 and in position to make a run at it. That's what it takes. Wrong hire on defense and he too would be up for an Offensive Coordinator job in the NFL.

I hope it was not a shot at Charlie. If it was it was unprofessional and completely off base. I am otherwise very pleased and optimistic and I am glad he is in his words, "excited for the challenge of finding the RKG's"

Back in post #41 I noted I hadn't seen the PC but had just caught a soundbite on ESPN:

I haven't seen the PC yet just the highlight on ESPN.

Quote:
<TABLE border=0 cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=6 width="100%"><TBODY><TR><TD style="BORDER-BOTTOM: 1px inset; BORDER-LEFT: 1px inset; BORDER-TOP: 1px inset; BORDER-RIGHT: 1px inset" class=alt2>You don't win on Saturdays with "Xs" and "Os"! </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
There's a new era clearly demarcated.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

The Xs and Os comments in context from the PC video or transcript puts it in a much different light than the soundbite. Kelly was asked a question by a reporter and he responded. Neither the question nor the answer was about Weis. He's clearly addressing player preparation.

From the PC Transcript (italics added for emphasis:
Q. Welcome to Notre Dame. You have stated or you have been quoted in the past to say that you can't start winning until you stop losing. Can you explain exactly what that phrase -- all that that phrase entails?
BRIAN KELLY: Eating at Burger King at 3:00 in the morning is not going to make you the best for your 8:00 workouts. Not being on time, not paying attention to detail, not being purposeful in what you do on a day-to-day basis. Attention to detail is absolutely crucial in this process of winning, and so when I talk about working on winning, I mean you do that from the first day you step on this campus if you want to win. You don't win on Saturdays with Xs and Os. You win on Saturdays because you've been working on it all week, and so it's that attention to detail. It's morale, it's camaraderie, it's one voice.
Those things are what I refer to as working on winning. They then show themselves on game day.

Everyone sitting in Mom's basement criticizing Kelly's words already, and comparing them to Coach Weis et. al. is forgetting some things: The man played linebacker at Assumption a small school in MA, he got dirty and he got wet playing for love of the game, he has been on the sidelines in Div II, and lower tier BCS schools earning his way. He built every where that he coached and he has already shown what he can do: Elevate young men to play above their potential.

He could be the deal, but trying to break him down before he sets foot on the field is weak. Have mom bring you some more cheesie poofs and relax!

wow. somebody's got mother issues, apparantly. nobody is critisizing BK for his words. it is just a matter of showing a healthy "wait and see" attitude and not gushing over the standard blueprint press conference that is given by every new coach that is hired.

given the tenure of 4 of the last 5 ND coaches, i find that to be a very appropriare approach.

I also think, based on seeing the entire press conference in its context, that he was not trying to take shots in the slightest. In fact, knowing both he and Charlie's personality, I bet you he was being honest about the possibility of speaking with Charlie at some point about the intricacies and pressures of the job. Don't think it was intended to be a jab at all.

Also, great to see another Packers fan on here! I was just raving about McCarthy's offense in the "Kelly's Offense" thread - they actually have fairly similar mindsets. However, the Packers are still 8-4 at this time... unless you're counted the guaranteed win over Cutler this weekend :) (Bears fans don't kill me... ha ha)

Was no "nasty" - just read the Elkhart paper and the specifically noted - no "nasty".

Also... how the hell do you get 3:00 am Burger King and Charlie together???

He's talking about the boys and staying up late and then being able to preform at game level in practice. Noone was more prepared with attention to detail than CW.... He was famous for being home at 1:00 am and up for work at 4:00 - at ND by 4:45.

Charlie may have paid attention to detail for himself, but his teams were poorly coached, stupid penalties, poor tackling, and on and on. I truly believe Kelly will shore up these issues and this team will execute. Also, Kelly isn't afraid to get in people's faces for not focusing. I loved the heated heart to heart he had with Pike at the end of the first half of the Pitt game.

You guys forget that the alternative to CW was Clements!

CW left us better than he found us... isn't our money.

Thank you for the transcript. It makes more sense now. At first when I heard it I thought no surly not and then when others had the same thoughts I was like maybe it was. Like I said I hope he would not be unprofessional and you are correct the context was not negatively natured toward anyone, he was just saying he wanted an attention to detail. Thanks for all the response it makes me feel better to know that is not what it is.

Lol well I guess I miscounted the wins. I knew they had 4 losses and tried to count the weeks. My bad I guess my guarantee would have been good though. My neighbor is a bear fan, so it will be nice to see my Packers flag hanging on his doorstep for the next few week.(An on going bet we have with one another)
