Recruiting if Weis is Fired

Meh, it won't be catastrophic like everyone thinks.. This basically gives Martin his out, but I think we all knew that was coming regardless.

The article doesn't seem to have much substance...basically says that pipeline kids will stay committed because they go to schools that ND recruits from. If these kids have been heavily recruited, it will come down to whether or not the new coach can convince them that ND is still a better fit for them then wherever else they were recruited by. Impossible to say how those conversations will go, to pretend otherwise is pure speculation.

Guys, we have 18 commits. 16 of those commits have all told varying media outlets that they are solid to ND and to expect them on campus next year (some earlier than others).

Chris Martin is going to take more visits, and it looks like right now, even though he is 'committed' to ND, we're sitting at number 2 behind Florida (of course), and just ahead of OK.

Kendall Moore might take visits but he said he is pretty solid to ND, that it's "going to take a lot to change my mind."

Now, the 2 QB's said they will switch only if the new coach brings in an offense that makes them obsolete (Paul Johnson).

We could conceivably keep 17 out of 18 players, maybe even 18. That's a pretty damn good amount, considering there is an imminent coaching change. That's a credit to Charlie Weis, who by all accounts does a fantastic job selling the school and not the coaching staff staff.

Of course, that's what kids are saying now. Things can and will change, as they always do, even when there is stability in the coaching staff. o if you follow this stuff daily, it's going to be a bumpy ride. In December and January, when coaches have more time, get ready for everyone to start trying to poach our recruits. Hopefully, with a great hire, we'll be able to keep our current class together while adding some key players. We'll see...

I don't understand why Weis leaving would effect Martin's decision anyway. Wouldn't Brown, Tenuta, or any other coach related to the defense effect his decision more?

It will be what it will be regarding recruiting. Most of these recruits are going to come for what ND is all about, not just because Weis is head coach. Not saying that it won't have a slight negative impact on it, but they all know that ND is going to bring in a top-notch coach .... some way, some how! It speaks volumes of the recruits that do indeed stick w/ their commitment .... true integrity on their part!!!

I'm not nearly as concerned with losing upcoming recruits as I am with losing players that don't want to play in a different system. Whether we like it or not, some kids have legitimate aspirations to the NFL and playing in a pro-style offense would have been a huge boost for their development. If ND brings in a Brian Kelly, do people think that Dayne Criist will want to stay on as running quarterback after an ACL tear? What about the offensive lineman that have been bulking up for pro blocking schemes, the spread prefers light, mobile lineman. We have one heck a receiving core, but will they be committed to a system that isn't catching on in the NFL?

If ND makes the choice to terminate Weis's contract, I am more concerned with the attrition already at ND.

Usually when a new coach is brought in, a whole new staff comes with him. Brown, Tenuta, Hart and even Young might be gone.

Actually, it's a pretty substance filled article in terms of the history of how these things go, how pipeline schools work, and the Catholic school connection. Beyond that, he can't tell you specifically what each kid will do. But for the historic trend, it's a good article.

Not necessarily Hart is a prime example of surviving coaching changes at U-Dub. It depends if the coach wants to do a complete over-haul of the program and what coaches are going to follow him. If over-haul does occur that mean he's going to be spending more time looking for coaches than developing and recruiting.. At this point, this program expects you to win it all now. In which cases, I find that to be the most laughable thing becasue it's never going to happen.

Most f the current class will stay intact. Chris might waver but it really depends on the next coach as well.

What it will hurt is recruiting going foreward. Guys like Henderson, Joyner, Linder, Barr, James, Nix and so on will have people in their aear and the uncertainty of the future of the program. Unless Notre Dame hires someone immediatlyand its a copach thatwill make a big splash then, then i do not see too many names joining this class.

I sure am gonna miss Weis, Polian, and Ianello. They made signing alot of fun

That would be completely up to the incoming coach. He just might want to bring his own crew in to do the job.

Honestly, I think whoever we bring in will be more appealing than Weis anyway.

We could end up enticing some afterthoughts we might not have had if Weis had stayed.

Not true. The NCAA changed the rules for spring recruiting because guys like Weis, Stoops, Carrol, and Meyer would go the extra mile to recruit guys. Alot of coaches complained because they didnt want to work. So now head coaches can not visit players in spring

Struck me much the same. He mentions ND is one of two Catholic Div 1 schools which may impact a couple of recruits but not most. ND has their own TV contract but all the majors are on TV now. I found it surprising that he didn't mention ND's fine education, the extensive worldwide alumni network, ND's position as the leader in graduation rate, and the earning power of an ND degree. ND prepares the whole man for success in life after college be it in the NFL, business, medicine, law, whatever.

I hope whomever the new coach is they keep Polian and Ianello on board; they were one of the main reasons for our recruiting improvement. Polian is a recruiting beast out in Cali.

I agree with that. Anybody else notice during the UConn game when they showed Swarbuck in the booth who was sitting next to him? It was old man Polian in his ear. Probably posturing to keep his kid on staff when Weis is fired.

I think Polian has done a pretty good job as coach and he has been great recruiting.

Actually Meyer very much wanted that rule. He was pissed all the coaches were coming to Florida to "steal" all his players. I saw his quotes on it somewhere, but ain't gonna look for it now. This rule effectively keeps the coaches out of Florida, but the kids can still go to Meyer on their own.
