How will Clausen be remembered?

Its an odd situation because he may have had the best season a ND qb has ever had in history but his overall record is going to probably be under .500 which is really unheard of at ND. He might be the best QB ever at ND and also the losingest qb. Strange.

I should add, Im assuming he leaves which is a strong probability.

If he leaves, he will be remembered as a good QB, but not great. Years from now, it's mostly the winning QB's that people will remember. Fair or unfair, that's kind of how it is.

50 some years earlier there as a QB at ND that only won 2 games in a season. He won a Heisman Trophy that year and is well remembered for his play on and off the field.

Would that be Mr Hornung?

Yeah but Hornung led in passing, rushing, scoring, returns, and was high up on many defensive stats.

Actually, Hornung made CJ's famous... Before JC put it back on the map Saturday night / Sunday morning.

If JC came back... he'd be a legend. He'd be a one word legend... Ara, Knute, Rocket, Lou, Montana... Jimmy.

He leaves early and he'll be remembered as a "good" QB (yes, I know Rocket left early).

Well, we still have Gody set to break about every record at ND as well as the Big East.

Honestly, I think it depends in large part on how he fairs in the NFL. If he is spectacular as a pro and has a HoF career, he'll be remembered differently than if he craps out. Look at Joe Montana vs. Tom Clements. Both won exactly 1 national championship while QB of Notre Dame. Which one is better remembered and easily identified with the University, not just by ND fans, but by everyone else as well?

If he leaves, I will remember him as to come in with high hopes and a lot of people giving him shit. Growing up before our eyes and if he had stayed one more year, could be considered in the catagory of great ND quarterbacks.

If our Defense was better he sure would leave with a better memory. Or not getting sacked a ton in his real early years. He isn't perfect, but I am one who sure likes having him as our QB.

The defense has really killed his chances of having a real special year this year.

Very true,

Im too young to have seen Clements but my dad said he was great and hes surprised how little remembered he is. My dad thinks Theisman was the best he ever saw at ND as a QB and that Montana was good, not great, but really pulled it off when the games were on the line.

Clausen will be remembered as a good QB, but never lived up to his billing as the greatest QB prospect of the last 10-20 years.(whatever recruiting services were claiming about him)

I saw the Lemming Report where Clausen is ranked among the Top 15 High School prospects of All-Time. He was featured on ESPN as being the future of Football

Winning has a lot to do with his legacy, and being known as having one of the worst records as a starter(11 games or more) in Notre Dame history will not help.

I think Clausen unfortunately will be remembered for getting punched out after losing a game.

Yeah, I'm in the same boat. Both players graduated before I was around, and to be honest, I'm not sure I knew who Clements was before his name came up in the last round of the coaching search. When I grew up, I guess he was still playing in the CFL. Can't really remember. Joe Montana on the other though, what football fan doesn't know him? And from what I can tell (again, didn't see either of them while they were at ND), Clements really had the better college career than Montana to boot.

He'll be remembered as the kid who followed Brady Quinn.

That is, unless JS brings back Charlie and Charlie gets Jimmy to stay.

He'll be remembered for the extraordinary pro career he is about to have, and that he started that at Notre Dame.

Most highly touted QB to ever come to ND, but never could win the big ones.

Just IMO. No disrespect intended, but Unless he stays another year, there really is not a big win to his name. Dont blame the kid for leaving, but he has got to win big in the pros to make himself into a name to remember 30 years from now.

I'm still stunned that the season went the way it has. JC is awesome but he will forever be linked to the failings of the CW years. But if he comes back next year to win a Heisman then he will be one of the greats in the eyes of the ND Nation.

How will JC be remembered???

Hmmm...

How about, he'll be remembered as the QB that beat Stanford 38-35 in 2009.....And hands the game ball to their leader, head coach, Charlie Weis in another show of love and support.

Nice sentiment.

I'll remember him being tough as nails. Someone capable of last-minute heroics, a Notre Dame quarterback in the truest sense. Just happened to play here during a down cycle. I wish him better fortunes in the NFL.

If he leaves (which he will) he'll be remembered as the Notre Dame QB with the most potential ever. Had he had a better o-line while he was here and a better defense he would probably be the best ND QB ever, but that's a what if.

For me Jimmy is the best QB at ND in my lifetime, i'm in my early thirties. This kid has every throw, every bit of grit, toughmess and determination and where-with-all that i have ever seen. He doesn't pout, bitch to the media, or say or do anything negative. He is a ND man, in every sense.

When he came here, despite the hype, i wanted to NOT like him. Being from Southern Cal, cocky, having the haircut of the lead singer of Sum41, i waned to hate him... assuming he was overrated. But, come the first game of 2007, despite the terrible, epically bad game vs. GT, i told my friends and family to watch out, this kid is gonna be something special.

I absolutely hate, hate, hate it that he hasn't had more wins. He is refined, mature, respectable, and a hell of an athlete.

I remember Powlus coming in so highly touted and not feeling he was it. The minute Jimmy beat SDSU last year i developed a man-crush. He has done everything he possibly could considering the hand-cuffing he has taken under the current admin. ( coaching)

Jimmy may or may not go on to more success in the NFL, but because of his grit and cold veins he has become my favorite QB other than Rice and Montana.

Lastly, i don't know that its a foregone conclusion he's gone. Its the smart move, money wise, the smart move considering Charlie is gone, in alllllllllll likelihood, but depending on the hire, we may just see him back next year. I give it a 5% chance, but he could come back b/c Golden will likely stay, Floyd is back, the "D" willl be better and i believe the o-line will be better. With Crist not likely to be ready for the spring practices, don't be completely shocked if Jimmy comes back for the Heisman he so rightfully deserves.

Clausen will be remembered as one of the best QB's to ever walk into notre dame stadium. Great football player, tough kid. I do believe his records in the past 3 years will affect his status of being Notre Dame's best QB of all time, but still hell of a football player.

To me Mr.Clausen will be remebered as a great qb to me, and probably most irish fans, but to outsiders hes a failure. Hes a man of great attutide, never negative, he plays with emotion, he will do everything he can to win becuase that is the type of person he is, a winner. Over the last few years we havent seen much of it from him, but this year i think hes matured a lot considering he lead some 4th quarter comebacks this year. IF the D would have steped it up all year, IF we made the feild goals, IF we didnt make dumb mistakes, IF we kept turnovers to a minimum, we would be having a winning season right now and Clausen would be getting a lot more respect, he has now moved to my fav, irish player, and will remain so for awhile. Hes a true ND of everyway, and i really hope he doesnt go i would like to see him have another good season next year.

Thanks for all you have done Mr.Clausen.

"He never won a big game"

That's stupid. Plain stupid.

Is Clausen supposed to line up on the defensive line and stuff the run? Take a hand off and dive over a goalline pile? catch his passes? and block his own blindside?

He's a QB (there are 21 other positions), and roughly 40 or so players (when you count the 2 deep) that have various degrees of impact on the game. Saying Clausen hasn't won a big game as some knock on his ability is completely ridiculous.

I've been watching football for over 20 yrs now and I've never seen a better pure passer, at any level, in my entire life.

Clausen is video-game accurate with a strong enough arm to compliment his quick release and pinpoint accuracy. There isn't a throw he can't make. He's a competitor in every sense of the word and has succeeded in the face of a lot of adversity his entire career. It has been an absolute pleasure to watch him blossom over the last 3 years.

He's up there with the best to ever play the position at ND. If he returned his SR year, which isn't likely, he'd graduate breaking every meaningful QB record in the history of the program.

He has to leave before he can be remembered.

His numbers are outstanding, but over time will his inabiity to post a signature win compromise his position in the Irish legend?

Trivia, Who is the only Heisman winner to have won the trophy before winning his Monogram?
