Am I the only one who thinks this Weis / ND relationship is ending badly? (obviously, if it ends, it ends kind of badly) It just seems like there is some bad blood brewing.

BIG TIME!!!! Can't recall the interview, but things aren't going to end with an exchange of x-mas cards and hugs.

Wait, you actually believe Meyer's latest presser? You know he said the same things when he was at Utah before he went to Florida and the same things when he was at BG before he went to Utah? It's typical coachspeak. If he has interest in the job, what do you think he's supposed to say to the media while he's preparing Florida for the SEC title game and possibly another BCS game? He has to deny interest. Same goes for Stoops.

I'm not saying Meyer or Stoops has genuine interest in ND, but our Admin would be absolutely foolish to not call either of them. They are home run hires and would be great for ND. If they don't have interest, then move onto the low hanging fruit like Kelly and Patterson.

Exactly. Why settle???? Go for broke and make the offer to Meyer then go from there. My God ND is going to settle for the flavor of the month, I can feel it coming. Another 3-5 years of crap while the Irish rebuild. Hit the home run or go away Jack.

I don't think Charlie Weis's relationship with Notre Dame is ending badly, I think his relationship with Notre Dame's fans and the national media is ending badly. Frankly, Jimmy Clausen's little incident is just another black eye for the school (no pun intended). So is this our new pitch to high profile recruits:

Coach: "Come be the QB at ND, you'll be in the national spotlight, you can help resurrect the program and if you don't succeed you'll have some nice parting gifts: ND game jerseys, school records, possible first round NFL pick."

Prosepctive Recruit: "What are the fans like?"

Coach: "They're great, they really want the team to win and they're a hands-on fanbase."

Prosepective Recruit: "What do you mean by hands-on?"

Coach: "They like to high five you after games and pat your back around campus. (Now barely audible and mumbling) And they might punch you in the face."

Prospective Recruit: "I didn't catch that last part; did you say punch you in the face?"

Coach: "I've really enjoyed talking with you. We'll be in touch."

How about our pitch to the next coach?

AD: "It's a premier job with all the money and perks to go along with it."

Coaching Candidate: "Tell me about the expectations."

AD: "Well, you have to win immediately. Sorry, that's just how it is. You'll need to throw your players and coaches under the bus or you'll be considered a moron. Oh, you'll also need to show no bravado; never talk about what your expectations or hopes for the school are. You'll need to kiss the alumni's collective ass and sacrifice meals and times with your kids because they have a right to force you to spend three nights a week at their swanky dinners explaining why you lost the game."

Coaching Candidate: "Okay, that sounds a bit daunting but it's just the way it is when you're coaching in the big time."

AD: "Oh yeah, and here's the American Medical Association's suggested weight range for men of your height. You see, if you're overweight you're automatically an asshole and your weight will be fodder for the national media and fans if you should fail. What happens on the field doesn't even matter as long as your overweight. Maybe you should even get invisline braces to straighten out your teeth. Hell, while you're at it you should just take a picture of George Clooney to a plastic surgeon and tell him that you want to look just like George."

Coaching Candidate: (Unenthusiastically) "Wow, I'll tell you what, I'm going to talk it over with my family and get back to you. By the way, we just moved into a new house and we haven't gotten a phone number assigned to us. I'll just call you when we get that number."

AD: "One last thing, you'll need to hire Jesse Jackson as your spirtual advisor and donate at least $500,000 per year to the NAACP or else you'll be considered a racist."

Coaching Candidate: "Yeah, yeah.....um.....anyway, as I said, I'll call you."

Coaching Candidate: "Tell me about the expectations."

AD: "on a fairly regular basis, beat the teams that you have more talent than. we have a schedule designed where that should garner 10-11 wins every year"

Coaching Candidate: "Okay, that sounds doable. i know i can recruit great players to come to play for me at ND."

AD: "Oh yeah, if you become obese, people will make fun of you. people can be cruel sometimes, but it is that way in all walks of life. the difference is that as a public figue, more people will notice that you are obese.

Coaching Candidate: "I'll tell you what, I'm going to talk it over with my family and get back to you."

I love how people are starting to attribute this to physical appearance again. Lets ignore the fact his records are now worse than the previous 2 fired coaches. Lets ignore the possibility that were on the brink of having a worse season than last or at best an equal one.

Charlie Weis: Fired for being obese
Tyrone Willingham: Fired for being black
Bob Davie: Fired for being a losing coach.

In other words if you're healthy & white it's OK that they fire you, otherwise it's just wrong. Get over it people CW didn't get the job done. He didn't accomplish what he promised. Grown people don't care about weight or color. These are childish excuses meant to distract you from the facts. If you want to ignore facts & blame this on things no grown adult with half the sense god promised a goose would even consider then by all means please continue to live in fantasy land. The rest of us will continue to see it for what it is, a man that didn't do the job he was hired to do & not meeting the standards of his employer.

I like Charlie as much as the rest of you but a job is not a popularity contest. If you think it is I beg you to start producing only about half of what your employer expects of you over the next several months. When they go to fire you please tell them "but you can't, people like me" & see what kind of difference it makes.

Even Charlie has said what he's done is "not good enough" so please let him go out with some dignity. Don't cloud the issue with childish unrelated excuses because he's isn't.

First, I haven't seen anything that points that ND wants Kelly. Second, what makes you think that Meyer, Stoops, or Gruden isn't interested?

What did you see that pointed to ND wanting Meyer, other than that it was the conjecture of every beat writer close to the team at the time? As for the 3 big names not being interested: Meyer-Just going on how definitive the man himself has been in his press conferences. Stoops-Pretty much the same thing, plus the fact that he has no history of coach-speak involving changing jobs, making this even less likely than Meyer. Gruden-Just re-signed with ESPN, ntm when he does coach, he is unarguably an NFL head coach. He likes working with professionals who work 40+ hours a week, the 20 hour practice rule in the NCAA would kill him. Plus, he's not the kind of guy who wants to go around shaking hands and kissing babies the way you have to at Notre Dame, he just wants to come in w/ a hoodie on at 4:30 AM, work 'til 11:00 PM, and go home w/o dealing with anyone beyond his players and assistant coaches. No alumni, no boosters, no special interest groups. Just don't see him being interested.

And I don't think they would let their list of top coaching prospects slip out like it did last time. All the fans knowing that Charlie was our fourth choice doesn't help with anything.

How could they keep it a secret? They had to fly to Utah to visit with Meyer. Steve Mariucci held a friggin press conference after they called him to announce to the world that yes, he had been contacted, but no, he would be staying in Detroit. I mean, I really don't see how an organization as in the spotlight as ND could keep it a secret. Trust me, if they call Urban and get turned down (again), its going to come out. Same for Stoops, same for Gruden. My whole original point is, can we please just not go through that again? It sounds like they're interested in Kelly. Just for the sake of argument, lets say that's true. If so, don't bother with the big names now that 2 of them (Meyer & Stoops) have preemptively said they're not interested, and the third has never seemed interested in a college job and likely wouldn't be a great fit anyway. And if Meyer or Stoops were lying and really wanted a phone call, tough crap on them. When they realize they're not getting one b/c of the statements they've made, they can call Swarbrick if they're interested, not the other way around.

I wasn't attributing CW's firing to his physical appearance; I know that the administration and Swarbrick are more substantive than that. I'm pointing out the fact that the media and many fans are piling onto Weis because he's obese. So actually I'm saying the same thing you are.....it's not germain to the topic of his job performance. And I think it's a lousy thing to always bring up. Yeah, I've done it before (tongue-in-cheek) but he's a human being. He didn't cut it as the head coach, most all of us agree, but people don't need to take cheap shots at the guy but that seems to be a real aspect of the job and that's all I was pointing out.
