Clausen was at C.J.'s Pub at about 2 a.m. with his family and girlfriend after Notre Dame's double-overtime loss to Connecticut, according to the official.
The group decided to leave after words were exchanged with others at the bar, the official said. As they were leaving, Clausen's girlfriend realized she left her purse behind. Clausen went back to retrieve the purse and someone followed him outside and punched him, the official said. Clausen did not fight back and left, the official said.
South Bend Police Capt. Phil Trent says police were called to the scene after receiving a report of a fight. He says police arrived within minutes and everyone was gone.
An employee at CJ's Pub who asked that his name not be used told ESPN's George Smith that several Notre Dame upperclassmen were with Clausen at the bar Saturday. He said the group included several offensive lineman and other offensive players.
The employee said off-duty South Bend police officers were working at the bar providing security, which is fairly common there.
"If anything had happened inside, we would have handled it," he said. "No one was accosted inside."

Weis poked fun at Clausen during practice on Tuesday, saying his new nickname was "Darth Vader."
Weis announced in August that he would allow Notre Dame players to wear visors for the first time. He said at the time that they could wear only clear visors because he didn't think dark visors would look right at Notre Dame and he didn't want players to have "Darth Vader visors."
"I thought [they] were way too Hollywood for Notre Dame," he said.

I think this comes down to how the team is playing this year and how Clausen came in at the college football HOF. It seems ever since Clausen came to campus he has been raped by the media and the fans...let the kid be a kid. Now if we were winning and Clausen was in talks for a heisman this would never have happened, sad.

This shit just keeps getting funnier. Not one teammate (and I use that word loosely) around to kick the balls off the MF who punched Jimmy? Really?? No doubt, can't blame that one on Charlie. No one's got your back, Jimmy!! But then he already knew that.

Jimmy did not retaliate.
Assuming these facts are true, he should be commended for doing the right thing. How many times do you hear similar stories involving pro athletes that end up including gun charges & other serious offenses. This could have very easily been a much worse situation & a media frenzy had JC's reaction & decisions been different. Had he retaliated in anyway this would be a mess.
Jimmy did the right thing & something I know personally I would not have been able to & that was to be the bigger person & walk away. Here's a kid with a lot of maturity in realizing the situation he was in was bigger than him in that whatever he does is a reflection of his school & his football team.
I really hope this doesn't have a negative effect on his decision on whether to stay or go. Between this & the coaching situation it doesn't look promising & thats really to bad. He's deserving of a National Title & a Heisman as his play this year was easily good enough to achieve both those goals. Sadly he just didnt have the support he needed to get it done.
