ND #22 in BCS

Nothing would make me happier than to see us get in over Penn State. If Joe Paterno's going to spend his remaining days bitching about Notre Dame he might as well have a reason besides jealousy.

Nothing would satisfy me more than to put that old man in the ground a loser come the new year.......that is unless it was against The Sweatervest, then the stakes go up that much higher......I hate Warden Tressel and all he supposedly stands for with every fiber in my being.

If things stay the same as they are now, and ND rises high enough, say 14, add in our recent poor game performances and BCS success rate I would say ND would be passed up. USC was given a free pass with the loss to Washington because of their history of success. Next year they won't nearly as highly ranked.

If there are At Large slots available and ND gets to 14 or higher, ND gets an invite.

If ND is at #14, the recent game performances would consist of a 6 game winning streak and a Heisman AND a Biletnikof Finalist.

The Bowls aren't going to be looking at Bowl Success from 3 or 4 years ago they'll be looking at ticket sales, hotel rooms, and TV sets tuned in.

You are kidding yourself if you don't think there are other teams that would travel as well.

i saw on a local football show down here that one of the bcs officials said if Notre Dame was 10-2 and in the top 14 they would get in over and undefeated bsu, cincy, and tcu.

We win out we're in.

If he said it, he misspoke.

Can't be. Undefeated Cincy would make them Big East Champs and get them an Automatic Bid. Likewise Undefeated BSU and TCU means one of them gets an Automatic Bid as they'd be ranked high enough.

A 10-2 ND could well get selected over 10-1 BSU, CINCY, and TCU as they would all drop 7 slots or so with a loss.

you are right about cincy, but ND would get one of the large bids before udefeated tcu and bsu.

it was mark schlabach that said he spoke to a bcs rep

basically ND would be the sexier pick, and all the bowls would fight over them.

I think its a top12 finish for a midmajor gets them. IE, TCU or BSU will get one spot, if they win out.

if usc doesnt win their conference they dont get an automatic bid, and they wont get in over us as an at large. we win out, we are in the bcs.

You really think this? That ND would get chosen over USC, even though USC beat us?

I'd love to see it happen, but I think that's crazy. I'm gonna bet that's not happening.

I know you guys keep saying "Just win out and we're in!"... but that's really not a lock. There just aren't enough slots:

There are only eight non-championship bids. Four of those will go to conference winners (the other two conference winners will be in the championship). So that leaves four available.

Boise/TCU will get one. Three available.

If Iowa and Penn St. win out, Penn St. will get one. If Ohio St. Beats both, Iowa will get one. If Ohio St. beats Iowa, but loses to Penn St., Iowa wins the Big 10 and Penn St. gets the BCS bid. If Ohio St. loses to Iowa but beats Penn St. (this is what we need and are hoping for), the Big 10 should only get their conference champ. But since we need help there, we'll say two slots remain.

The loser of the SEC championship will get one. Down to one spot available.

That leaves USC (10-2), Boise/TCU (12-0), and Houston (11-1).

That's four teams vying for one spot. ND would almost definitely get in over Boise/TCU, and an 11-1 Houston team (they shouldn't, but since this is about money, they would). And then there's USC. USC beat us. I just don't think we get picked over USC if they win out, too.

So, this is what we should be rooting for in this order:

1. Ohio St. to lose to Iowa, but beat Penn St.
2. USC to lose again (best hope is probably Arizona)
3. Utah to beat TCU and Boise St. to lose (best hope here is against Nevada)
4. A crazy SEC mashup where the loser of the SEC championship ends up with three losses (like if Alabama loses to LSU and Auburn, and LSU loses to Ole Miss and Arkansas, and Florida beats Alabama in the SEC championship).

I'm not saying we're definitely out if none of the above happens... but it sure would make things easier.

Its impossible to know "For sure."

But in the case for the pac 10 and big 10 runner up, thems the breaks when youre in a conference and dont win it, you dont get your AQ.

Boise/Tcu will get one. If ND is eligible they most likely will be taken. I am saying if we win out and are in the top 14 i certainly believe we will be in the bcs.

Theres a lot of football left so anything can happen, we just need to win.

Neags, Thanks a lot! That really clears up the race for someone like me who is too lazy to actually work that out myself!

If we were 10-2 and SC was 10-2 and they handed us the BCS game I think it would be complete bullshit.

Thats the honest truth. We should be in the Gator/Cotton in that scenario and SC should get the BCS.

I dont want the college football world in an uproar and ND in the middle of a shit storm that would certainly accompany.

Nice.

But you sound like that guy I met this weekend at the sportsbar who sat there all day with his laptop and didn't even notice the fabulous boobies bouncing around.

lol... oh, I'd notice the boobies. And who brings a laptop to a sportsbar? I'm definitely not that guy. A college football geek for sure, but not that guy.

One of the purposes of an at-large bid is for teams who don't win their conference but deserve a BCS bid.

So... why shouldn't they be able to complain? That's the whole point of the at-large bid (other than for those teams not in a BCS conference).

if you wanted your GUARANTEED Bid, then win your conference, otherwise your fate is in the hands of the voters, dont bitch just win your conference. if we dont get a bcs bid, but we're 10-2 we'll have no one else to blame but ourselves for not beating mich and usc

No, ND is definitely the top choice when it comes to travelling and a fanbase in that city (outside of it being a hometown team of course). We are the first choice when it comes down to at-large bids. That's just the truth.

Doesn't mean ND would be selected. IMO to be a sure lock you need to be a top10, outside of being top8 that is.

to be honest, when selecting an at-large, i dont think the bcs bowls care if were 11-1 and #9 or 10-2 and #14. if were available they'll take us.

It's all about money, and Notre Dame brings them money. If we are eligible, I expect we will make it to the BCS. They don't care if they screw USC, Boise St., or any other team to get their money.
